DIRECTOR’S
NOTE
The 2019 Joburg Film Festival arrives in our
social cultural calendar at a watershed moment.
Joburgers and South Africans writ large are en-
gaged in a complex and demanding conversation
about the meaning of South Africa and its place
in the African continent. This, following recent
clashes across the country whose causes can
be wrapped up with the question: what is Africa
to us?! The country is also engaged in a demand-
ing conversation about how to build a sustaina-
ble and growing economy for all.
This year’s installment of the festival is at the
heart of how we answer these questions. Moved
by the idea that our stories, are our gold we
have a focus on African stories, both on the con-
tinent and in the diaspora as a source of inspira-
tion. Films, as storytelling method of storytelling
have a capacity to unify us in a unique way.
Further, the film industry is key to how our
country will shape its future creative economy
and diverse cultural identity. In this way, respond
to the national imperative to grow the economy,
unlock jobs and transform our society. This is
especially true because as Joburg is the home
of film and television South Africa.
We are empowered by our partnerships with
the MultiChoice Group, the National Depart-
ment of Arts and Culture, the Gauteng Film
Commision and our media partners Kaya FM
and Independent Media and many others who
support the festival.
The solutions we seek to inspire us are in the
stories told by myriad filmmakers and the people
that inspire them. Their work and lives inspire
us to curate the best films available in the world
today, and elevate them in the best possible light
for our audiences and celebrate their talent and
excellence.

DIRECTOR’S
NOTE
The 2019 installment of the Joburg Film Fes-
tival marks a bold moment in the life of this
growing festival as it enters its 3rd leg and
fourth year. As festival director, I’m inspired
and energized by the quality of films on the
programme along with the quality of speakers
giving masterclasses and those who will be
panelists as we discuss various topics that
are affecting the film and tv sector in our
industry programme.
Most notable this year is the Youth and
Audience Development Programme which
ran for four weekends in various parts of
Gauteng and allowed us to bring cinema to
the township and engage with the youth and
film enthusiast in an effort to discover emerg-
ing talent in film under the theme “Your Kasi,
Your Story”.
The young people that came out engaged with
industry experts and participated in various
workshops including story conceptualization,
directing, editing, how to create content using
mobile phones, as well as watch local films
that they may not have had the opportunity
to see on mainstream cinema. They were
then given an opportunity to create their own
stories under the theme Your Kasi, Your
Story. Our mission in 2019 was clear, to not
only bring the best films out there to Joburg,
but to also unearth real local stories, told
from an honest and unapologetic point of view
by the youth of Gauteng. Their commitment to
telling great stories drives the magic of what
is possible in our world of film.
This year, the festival is guided by the phrase,
Curate, Elevate, Celebrate. It embodies the
notion that speaks to how the festival’s
curatorial team has put together a great
programme of 60 expertly curated films from
across 20 countries across the African world
and beyond.
Our hub in the Nelson Mandela Square, will
help us elevate the talent and their work with
fitting revelry. In keeping with the imperative
to elevate and celebrate, we will dare to
have two red carpet events per day at the
premieres at the Auto & General Theatre on
the square.
We are again returning to have screenings
at the historic Kings Cinema in Alexander.

help audiences in
and outside of the
township rediscover
their love of film and
stories.
Our partnership with
Discop Joburg, which is
the site of our industrial
programme allows us to have an important
conversation about the film industry and its
potential to contribute to socio-economic
development and transformation.
This year is the year the joburg film festival
comes into its own and lives up to the dictum
our stories are our gold - thanks to our
partners, the MultiChoice Group, the Gauteng
Film commission and all the stakeholders
who supported our vision and efforts.

Has been the curator of the Joburg Film Festival
since its inaugural instalment in 2016.
Pimenta brings a world of experience to lead
the festival programming team to craft Africa’s
expertly curated film festival. As a leading voice
on Africa film, he has shaped the festival as an
unrivaled platform that celebrates the best in
African film from across the continent and the
diaspora. This year, films like Yardie, Hero and
Grace Jones, Bloodlight and Bami stand out as
examples of a diasporic conversation between
Europe and the Carabean african experience.
North American stories find voice and space
in the programme through Toni Morrison and
Amazing Grace for example.
In what is an example of the rise of animation as
a genre of storytelling, Liyana which tells the sto-
ry of a Swazi girl embarks on a dangerous quest
to rescue her young twin brothers.
All these have given the festival a diversified
film programme that should satisfy the most
demanding film lover.
This is in part thanks to his vast experience as a
curator and film festival director. In 2018 Pimen-
ta was invited to be a member of the Academy of
Motion Picture Arts and Sciences of the United
States, responsible for the Oscar awards.
Pedro has also served as the Festival Director of
the Durban Film Festival in 2015. Between 1997
and 2003, Pedro was the chief Technical Adviser
of the UNESCO Zimbabwe Film and Video training
Project for Southern Africa in Harare. As part of
his function he conceived and managed various
training programs.
He is one of the founders of AVEA (Audio Visual
Entrepreneurs of Africa) which runs an annual
professional training program for producers in
Southern Africa.
Until December 2005, Pedro was a member
of the Prince Claus Fund Awards Committee of
the Netherlands. He is the founder and Director
of DOCKANEMA, a documentary film festival in
Mozambique.

Nhlanhla has been with the Joburg Film Festival since
it’s sophomore instalment in 2018. He brings a
refreshing youthful energy to the curatorial and festival
management team.
Nhlanhla has his finger on the pulse of contemporary
film. This is how he reflects on his contribution to this
year film programme:
“2019 has seen a great proliferation of documentary
films that celebrate the arts and creatives from across
the Africa Continent and the world; reminding us that
even in the midst of global chaos, there is still a course
to celebrate. We also saw a rise in socially conscious
documentary films that challenged how we view the
world and some of our favourite artists.
These films shifted our understanding of the global
social contract and conversations. The topics range
from confronting figures of influence towards socio
accountability, standing up for social justice as well as
exposing social injustice to personal homecomings.
In this curated selection we are proud to be
screening several World and South African Premieres.
This year’s selection of feature films represents the
highlights of the year. They were chosen across a
range of genres, from the Western, and the thriller, to
horror, to the period piece and are representative of
different cultures, perspectives and experiences.
Each film is a shining example in its own right and
forms part of the myriad expression that is global cin-
ematic excellence. I hope that you will enjoy this year’s
selection as much as I did when making it.”

MCG’s youth-focused initiative, Magic in
Motion (MiM) Academy is just one aimed
at harnessing and building emerging talent
by exposing them to industry professionals.
The programmespecifically targets students
with a deep passion for Africa’s fast-growing
entertainment industry, encouraging them
to showcase their creativity.
Another MCG initiative, the MultiChoice Tal-
ent Factory (MTF), is a flagship Pan-African
shared-value initiative.
The interactive online portal is aimed at
profiling and connecting Africa’s industry
creatives and bringing pan-African talent
and opportunities together in one place. The
digital portal allows filmmakers across the
continent to network, find talent and show-
case their work, and serves both seasoned
professionals and aspiring talent in Africa’s
film and television industry.

GAUTENG FILM COMMISSION
STATEMENT
The Gauteng Film Commission (GFC) is
an agency of the Gauteng provincial gov-
ernment tasked with the development and
promotion of the audio-visual industries in
Gauteng. GFC’s core business is to deliver
professional film commission services as
well as to support, facilitate and enhance
the contribution of the film industry to the
economic growth of the Gauteng province.
The objective of GFC is to support, develop
and contribute to the growth of the Gauteng
film industry.
The Gauteng Film Commission (GFC) excited
to partner with Joburg Film Festival (GFC).
We wish JFF a successful edition of another
curated, eminent and a collective celebration
of local and Africa films. The independence
of JFF displays an unapologetic pride to
showcase and reward the continents excel-
lence in content creation.
As the GFC we are aware of the time
pressures from sourcing suitable venues,
locations and films, to ensure that the festival
provides the state of the art experience
to guests. Providing an atmosphere which
caters for the young and old. The series
of workshops, seminars and film screening
hosted at various venues allowing for people
from difference walk of life to share the
unique experience the festival has to offer.
The Youth and Audience development pro-
gram was a great experience and equally was
a learning curve for the GFC and JFF, where
we were able engage in a series of a work-
shops and film screenings in the 4 regions
of Gauteng. All regions were unique in their
own right from culture, language, lifestyle
and music preference, with a common goal
local content appreciation and there need to
easily access local content.
Gauteng with its diverse mix of urban life-
style, cultural and natural attractions, as well
as advanced infrastructure, is the perfect lo-
cation to bring your filming ideas to vibrant,
colourful life, and the GFC is the one stop
shop to easy your film business needs.

DEPARTMENT OF
ARTS AND CULTURE

Yet another edition of DISCOP Africa and
the ever growing Johannesburg Film Festival
(JFF) both of which the Department of Arts
and Culture has been supporting for the
past six years. The Department is encour-
aged to witness the continous relevants of
these platforms in stimulating the global
audiovisual industry. This year’s program-
ing is responsive to the issue of the 4th
IR through the strong Animation projects
and programs lined up for the next week of
DISCOP and JFF.
Earlier in the year, South Africa held an inau-
gural National Film/Audiovisual Summit
informed by the theme titled “Transforma-
tion and Innovation in the South African
Film/audio visual industry in the fourth indus-
trial revolution; are we geared for
change?” the key instruments/recommen-
dations from the Summit addressing socio-
economic transformation amongst others
were the following:
• Mobile economy opportunities
• Private investment stimulation
• Establishment of conten creation/
innovation hubs
• Animation as an instrument to
adress employment creation for
the youth.
The Department also acknowledges the
current economic environment, not only in
South Africa but globally, however it is en-
couraging to witness the number
of visitors to DISCOP and JFF this year de-
spite the difficult economic conditions.
The Department reinforces DISCOP Africa
as an international marketplace with oppor-
tunities for buyers and sellers of content to
interact, initiate co-production partnerships,
access information that will be invaluable for
their businesses and network with captains
of the industries. For the Department of Arts
and Culture this is one of the platforms that
is critical to measure if our objectives and
strategies are bearing fruit in creating an
enanbling enviroment to stimulate worth-
while activities for practitioners.
In conclusion, it is evident that based on the
central and strategic role that the depart-
ment plays in this evolving technologically
driven landscape, partnerships of this nature
makes business sense for the department in
creating an enabling enviroment for growth
and to stimulate investment. Part of our
guiding principles in fostering economic
development and growth is the understand-
ing that the market leads, and government
should enable, facilitate, advocate and
support.

Rocks (15) is a teenage girl with big dreams for the
future, loyal fun friends and an adoring, though
mischievous, little brother Emmanuel (7). Rocks
enjoys school (as much as any teenager does) and
lives a full vibrant life in East London with her team of
London - centric female best friends. Rocks world is
turned upside down when she returns from school to
find her mum gone, having left some cash and a note
offering little explanation except that she is sorry.
Determined to stick with her brother and avoid being
taken into care against all odds, Rocks leaves her
home and hides in pockets of East London. As each
day becomes tougher and her secret harder to hide,
Rocks starts to push away those who love her and
her friendship group begins to fracture. When the au-
thorities finally catch up with her, there is really only
one source of support for her to turn to: her friends.

the story of 16-year-old Jeremiah, who really wants to be a
policeman and can’t understand why his father won’t let him.
His father is the local postman and expects Jeremiah to take
after him.
When his father is killed, Jeremiah is exposed to the real
reason why he did his job he was operating a secret courier
service that delivered letters from exile and prison.
Will Jeremiah step up to take over from where his father left
off delivering letters of hope to the families of freedom fighters?

Akinnuoye-Agbajes FARMING charts the
extraordinary journey of a young fostered Nigerian
boy who, struggling to find an identity, falls in with a
skinhead gang in 1980s England
At six weeks old, Enitan (Zephan Amissah) is left in
the care of a white working-class family in the dock-
town of Tilbury, in Essex. His new surrogate mother,
Ingrid (Kate Beckinsale), makes for a complex, but
dubious foster parent. Unsure of his place in the
world, and lacking a mothers love, desperate to
belong the teenage Enitan (Damson Idris) spirals
into self-destruction, falling in with a local skinhead

Kingston Don and music producer named King Fox
(Sheldon Shepherd). Fox dispatches him to London,
where he reconnects with his childhood sweet-
heart, Yvonne (Shantol Jackson), and his daughter
who he’s not seen since she was a baby.

dignity, he sees no choice but to do a few odd jobs

When her disastrous wedding night leads to an accidental killing,
Natalie flees her husband and her small, rural town in South
Africa’s desolate Karoo region. Reuniting with her rebellious best
friend Poppie, who is heavily pregnant, the two young women
escape together on horseback across the endless winter
landscape. Hot on their trail is Captain Beauty Cuba, a lonely
policewoman intent on proving the innocence of her long-lost
fiancé, who has been framed for Natalie’s crimes.
The fate of these three different, yet equally desperate, South
African women will eventually converge as they ride towards
self-discovery in the face of the ever-present threat of violence,
psychological as well as physical.

passionate about fashion design refuses to let
the tragic events of the Algerian Civil War to
keep her from experiencing a normal life and
going out at night with her friend Wassila.
As the social climate becomes more conserv-
ative, she rejects the new bans set by the rad-
icals and decides to fight for her freedom and
independence by putting on a fashion show.

MASEBE
Born and raised in the province of Limpopo,
South Africa. An actor,Professionally trained
actress who has been in the game for more than
20 years. Florence Masebe has made a mark
in broadcasting and entertainment for more
than 20 years, having worked in radio, film and
television both in front of camera and behind the
scenes. Some of her more prominent lead roles
include work on popular dramas such as Gener-
ations, Muvhango, 7nde Laan, Soul City, Inkaba,
Scandal and Task Force. Across SA borders, she
plays the lead role in Morwalela, a health drama
on Botswana Television.
Miss Masebe made history at the Durban
International Film Festival 2012 as Executive
Producer and star of the first ever professionally
produced Tshivenda feature film Elelwani, which
also got the honour of being the opening film of
the festival. It is this role that won her the Best
Actress in a Lead Role accolade at the Africa
Movie Academy Awards in 2013. More of her
behind the scenes work include children’s pro-
grammes on the Kowee channel on DSTV. She
created and directed ZeeZee, an animation story-
telling series in IsiZulu. Another of her creations
on the channel is a kiddies game show Piki-Piki,
also done in IsiZulu. She also co-produced and
directed a documentary series on SABC2 called ‘I
had it All’ which profiled South African icons who
no longer have the fame and sometimes fortune
they once enjoyed.
She has worked as a News and Current Af-
fairs Anchor on SABC TV and also hosted the
program ‘Fokus’ with Freek Robinson. She holds
a degree in Communications and Linguistics and
continues to work in the media and marketing
fields. She speaks all South African languages as
well as Swahili. She’s a prominent voice artist and

Award winning actress CCH Pounder portrays “Dr. Loretta Wade”
on the CBS series, NCIS: NEW ORLEANS. In addition, Pounder will
reprise her role of “Mo’at” in James Cameron’s upcoming sequels
AVATAR 2 and 3. Other notable projects include the television shows
WAREHOUSE 13, SONS OF ANARCHY, REVENGE, BROTHERS, LAW
& ORDER: SVU and HBO’s THE NO. 1 LADIES’ DETECTIVE AGEN-
CY, which garnered Pounder her fourth Emmy® nomination. For
seven years, Pounder portrayed “Claudette Wyms” on the critically
acclaimed FX series, THE SHIELD, which earned her many accolades
including an Emmy® nomination, the MIB Prism Award,” two Golden
Satellite Awards and the “Genii Excellence in TV Award.”
Other honors for Pounder include an Emmy® nomination for her role
as Dr. Angela Hicks on the NBC series ER and an Emmy® nomination
for her role in FOX’s The X-FILES. In addition, she received. a Gram-
my® Award nomination for “Best Spoken Word Album” for GROW
OLD ALONG WITH ME, THE BEST IS YET TO BE and won an AUDIE,
the Audio Publishers Association’s top honor, for WOMEN IN THE
MATERIAL WORLD. Film credits include Home Again, Rain, Prizzi’s
Honor, Postcards From The Edge, Robocop 3, Sliver, Tales From The
Crypt: Demon Knight, Face/Off, End of Days, Mortal Instruments: City
of Bones, Orphan, Avatar, Godzilla: King of The Monsters and her
breakout role in Bagdad Café.

A graduate of Ithaca College, she received
an Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts from the
school and was their 2010 Commencement
Speaker. Pounder serves on the Board of the
African Millennium Foundation and was a
founding member of Artists for a New South
Africa. An advocate of the arts, she is active in
the Creative Coalition and recent accolades for
Pounder include the Visionary Leadership Award
in Performing Arts from the Museum of the African
Diaspora (MOAD) in San Francisco, the 2015
Carney Awards, the Lifetime Achievement Award
from Chase Brexton Health Care in Baltimore,
2015 Honoree at the Grand Performances Gala
in Los Angeles, & the 2016 SweetArts Performing
Arts honoree from the Contemporary Arts Center
in New Orleans, the National Urban Leagues 2017
Women of Power Award and the 2018 Bob Marley
Award from AFUWI (American Foundation for the
University of the West Indies).
In addition to her prolific acting career and advo-
cacy, Pounder has been extensively involved with
the arts as a patron, collector, gallery owner and
museum founder. Originally from Georgetown, Guy-
ana, Pounders collection consists of Caribbean and
African artists and artists of the African Diaspora.
Her collection is heavily concentrated in the area
of Contemporary Art but also includes traditional
African sculptures.
In 1993 Pounder and her husband, the late Bou-
bacar. Koné, founded and built the Musée Boribana,
the first privately owned contemporary museum in
Dakar Senegal, which they gifted to that nation in
2014. Pounders personal collection contains over
500 works of art, many of which she has generous-
ly loaned to Xavier University for a series of exhibi-
tions. and some which were recently on exhibit at
Somerset House in England.

Nataleah Hunter-Young is a film programmer, writer,
and PhD candidate in Communication and Culture at Ry-
erson and York Universities. She has supported festival
programming for the Toronto International Film Festival,
the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festi-
val, and the Durban International Film Festival. In 2019,
Nataleah was awarded the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foun-
dation Doctoral Scholarship for her ongoing research
into late representations of mediated police brutality in
contemporary art. You can find her recent writing online

Zakes Mda, is a notable South African novelist, poet
and playwright of more than 20 works. He has won
numerous literary awards in South Africa and the
United States of America. He studied in Lesotho, South
Africa and the USA and is a founding member of the
African Writers Trust, an initiative that aims to bring
together African writers. Mda, is based in the United
States, where he is currently Professor of English at
Ohio University.

The Joburg Film Festival presents a symbol
of excellence and achievement in the world
of cinematic arts: The glorious Nguni horns
symbol. The newly minted symbol of horns
replaces the customary laurel branch.
The Laurel which customarily adorns film
posters and other cinematic collateral to
announce the film and its makers’ glory
and noteworthy achievements is derived
from ancient Greko Roman tradition where
Laurel or olive-tree wreaths were awarded to
champions, both in athletic and poetic compe-
titions. In Rome, laurel wreaths were symbols
of martial victory used to crown successful
commanders.
By using the symbol of pointed horns to mark
and celebrate acclaim and distinction, the fes-
tival takes inspiration from an ancient African
tradition of bovine reverence.
The cow has, since time immemorial been,
at the heart of Africa’s notions of value and
prominence.
This genial beast of providence forms a key
part of all important ritual ceremonies in
African life. Matrimonial, funerary and other
rites of passage often require a cattle sac-
rifice and offering to be worthy of the divine.
A man’s wealth and worth is marked by the
beauty and health of his head of cattle.
The Batwana speak of “Mahube a naka tsa
kgomo,” the early dawn marked by the cow
horns silhouetted against the sun to denote
the beauty of sunrise. Hence, our new Nguni
horn symbol is an African icon befitting a
dawning global film festival in a world class
African city of the future.

The film is not just about his life but about the dynam-
ic and transformative times in which he lived. It is the

to Akete. Unfortunately, they miss the train, and the
train service is the only means of transport from the
outskirts to the town.
In their haste to get there, they compound their situ-
ation with a wrong decision and they find themselves
in the middle of nowhere. Now,
