Introduction
 Linseed is one of the oldest cultivated crops with oil and fiber use.
 Canada is top producer in the world
 India- MP top both production & area
 Seed content a good percentage of oil 33- 47% in different varieties..
 It is used as a animal feed in form of oil cack.
 it is also used as organic manure it contains
 N - 5%
 P - 1.4%
 K - 1.8%
Origin
Small Seeded Type :South-western Asia
Bold seeded type : Mediterranean region
including Asia Minor
Classification
• Kingdom:- Plantae
• Order :- Geranials
• Family :- Linaceae
• Genus:- Linum
• Species:- Usitatissimum
• According to Howard and Rahman 1924, its derived on three different groups
on the basis of colure of seed
• Yellow or white colored seed
• Fawn colored seed
• Brown colure seed
Botanical description
• Root – Shallow main taproot and many lateral roots.
• Stem- The stem is usually round to oval
• Leaves-alternate, smooth, have three veins
• Flower- The corolla forms a tube, a funnel
or a bowl in horizontal view
Uses of linseed
• used for preparation of paint , soap, varnishes, printing ink etc.
• It is used as a animal feed in form of oil cack
Soil & Climatic requirements
• Well drained loam to clay loam rich in humus.
• PH - 5 to 7
• Linseed Is a winter season crop
• Required moderate temperature 21-270C
• High temperature (>320C) with moisture stress during flowering stage
reduces seed yield
• Crop is suited to low rainfall 450-750 mm
.
Varieties:
• developed through the AICORPO Programmed
• Jawahar-1, Jawahar-7, linseed-9, Jawahar-17, Jawahar-18, BAU 204-1, LHCK-
39, LCK-9313.
Sowing time and seed rate
• India –1st week of Oct. to 1st week of Nov.
• For small seeded varieties - 10 to 15 kg/ha.
• For bold seeded varieties - 25 to 30 kg/ha.
• For uthera crop- 30 to 35 kg/ha.
Spacing: 20-30 X 7 -10 cm
Cultivation –
Cropping system
• Linseed is often grown as pure crop. intercrop-and
Paira or Utera crop. Generally, higher monetary returns
can be had if linseed is grown as a pure crop.
Intercropping
Rainfed : :Linseed + Chickpea/Lentil (3 : 1 or I : 3)
Irrigated : Linseed + Wheat (4:2)
Linseed + Mustard (5:1)
Linseed + Potato (3:3)
Field preparation
A ploughing by soil turning plough followed by 2-3 harrowings.
.
Nutrient management:
• FYM & Fertilizer required for 1 ha. area –
N - 50 kg
P - 40 kg
K - 30 kg
S - 40 kg
Z - 22.5 kg
FYM - 8-10 ton
Water management
 Irrigation are sufficient to obtain good yield
1st - 30 - 40 DAS
2nd – before flowering stage
If there are winter showers the crop no needs to irrigation.
Weed management
• Critical period of Initial 3-6 weeks after sowing.
• The uncontrolled weeds can reduce yields
by 25 to 40%
• Like - Anagallis arvensis, Vicia hirsuta, Fumaria
Parviflora, Melilotus spp .Phalaris minor,
Chenopodium album,etc.
• Parasitized by Cucuta sp. leading to heavy
losses of yield
Control: Hand weeding at 20 and 40 DAS.
Pendimethalin at 1.0 kg/ha (pre.em.)
Diseases management
Rust (Melampsora lini)
Control- grow resistant variety
– Neelam,hira,mukta
• Spray of moncozeb 75 WP @ 2 kg
in 1000 ltr of water per hac.
• Sulphur Dust 20 /kg @ per hac.
Powdery mildew (Oidium lini)
Control- grow resistant variety
jawahar-552, padmini,sweta
• Sow the crop early
• Spray a wettable Sulphur 0.3%/ per ha.
leaf spot (Alternaria lini)
Control- seed treatment with Thiram &
Bavistin @ 2.5 g per kg of seed
Spray Zineb @ 2.5 /kg in 1000 ltr of water
Per hac.
Insect & Pest Control
 Midge: Plasmodiophora brassicae
• It causes serious damage to crop by destroying flower buds.
• The maggots feed on the parts of the bud and cause gall formation.
Control: dusting of 2% methyl parathion 25-30 kg/ ha.
 Leaf miner: Athalia lugens proxima
• Its larva makes mines in the leaves and feet inside and
thus reduce the photosynthet of plant to some extent
• The peak period of activity of in march
Control : spray metasystox 25 EC or daimethoid EC @
1 ltr. In 1000 ltr of water per hactere
 Caterpillar: Achaea janata
• It include semi- looper, lucerne caterpillar and gram caterpillars
• These pest feed on the foliage and cause
some damage crop during march april.
• Control : spray Endosulfan 35 EC @ 1.25 ltr. In 1000 ltr. Of water / hac.
Maturity indicates and harvesting:
 when plant turn golden yellow and the capsules turn brownish begins
to dry up
 Harvesting to be done after 100 to 110 days.
 Harvested plants should be kept on sun for 3 to 4 days.
 Threshing can be done by bullocks or with sticks/sickle
Yield
• Av. Yield of rainfed crop - 300 to 500 kg/ha.
• Av. Yield of irrigated crop - 800 to 1000 kg/ha.
• Av. Yield of fiber - 400 to 600 kg cordage/ha.
• In linseed oil to seeds crushed is 33% while cake to seeds crushed is
67%.
