7. What
• A literature review:
• Provides the background / context to your topic
• Demonstrates familiarity with previous research
• Positions your study in relation to the research
• Provides evidence that may help explain your
findings later
• Highlights any gaps in the research
• Identifies your research question/s
11. Aims of this session….
• What is a systematic review?
• How to find relevant studies?
• How to extract appropriate data?
• How to critically appraise studies?
• How to synthesis data?
12. Purpose
• All research, whatever the discipline, needs to be
situated in relation to what has already been
done in the field.
• Reviewing the literature helps you:
• find out what is already known about a topic in
order to locate gaps and justify the research
being undertaken
• locate the work of important theorists whose
ideas will inform the research
• identify useful methodologies, methods and
documentary sources
20. Components in Practice
1.Is the topic related to your research?
Title and Abstract
2.What problem does the paper attempt to solve?
Abstract, Introduction and Problem definition.
3.What is the related literature in the area?
Review
4.Problems and solution
Introduction and conclusion
5.How does the authors defend the solution?
21. What to see in a study?
• Title
• Abstract
• Background
• Related Literature
• Problem definition
• Solution
• Scope, limitations
• Findings, Takeaway
22. What is a systematic review?
• SYSTEMATIC: Done or acting according to a
fixed plan or system: methodical
• REVIEW: A critical appraisal of a book, play
or other work
23. Why use systematic reviews?
• Minimise the impact of bias/errors
• Can help to end confusion
• Highlight where there is not sufficient evidence
• Combining findings from different studies can
highlight new findings
27. • Questions may be broad or narrow
• Well-formulated questions will guide many
aspects of the review process
– Searching strategy
– Inclusion/exclusion criteria
– Data extraction
– Choice of synthesis method
– Presentation/dissemination of findings
28. Systematic review in Practice
Topic
• A systematic review of research on the
flipped learning method in engineering
education
29. Abstract
• The purpose of this article is to describe the current state of
knowledge and practice in the flipped learning approach in
engineering education and to provide guidance for practitioners by
critically appraising and summarizing existing research. This article
is a qualitative synthesis of quantitative and qualitative research
investigating the flipped learning approach in engineering
education. Systematic review was adopted as the research
methodology and article selection and screening process are
described. Articles published between 2000 and May 2020 were
reviewed, and 62 articles were included for a detailed analysis and
synthesis. The results indicated that flipped learning gained
popularity amongst engineering educators after 2012. The review
revealed that research in engineering education focused on
documenting the design and development process and sharing
preliminary findings and student feedback. Future research
examining different facets of a flipped learning implementation,
framed around sound theoretical frameworks and evaluation
methods, is still needed to establish the pedagogy of flipped
learning in teaching engineering.
