6. Reactive vs Proactive People
R: How can he comment such negative words to my Facebook profile picture!
P: Okay. That’s his personal opinion. Let me ignore this bullshit.
R: Oh! It’s raining. I can’t concentrate on my work.
P: Whether it’s raining or shining, I have to work if I want to give good
results.
R: I don’t have time to exercise.
P: How shall I make time to exercise?
R: That’s just the way I am.
P: I can choose a different approach.
7. Reactive vs Proactive People
R: I’m too tired.
P: What can I do to increase my energy?
R: I’ve never been very good at graphics.
P: How can I improve my graphics skills and enjoy the process?
R: Oh, if only my boss wouldn’t be so rude at me...
P: Why my boss is so rude at me? Let me figure out what are the
works he
wants from me, and let it be completely done before the time at least

8. Reactive vs Proactive
Reactive language takes power away from you & gives it to
someone or something else.
Proactive language gives YOU power and gives you the
freedom to choose.
9. Reactive People
● Blame circumstances, conditions & conditioning.
● Behavior is a product of their conditions, based on feelings.
● If weather is good, they feel good, if it is bad, they feel bad.
● Reactive people build their lives around others emotions.
10. Proactive People
● Take responsibility for their choices.
● Not easily offended.
● Think before they act.
● Bounce back when something bad happens.
● Always find a way to make it happen.
● Focus on things they can do something about, and don’t worry about things they
can’t.
11. Proactive People
● Take initiative to make it happen
● Think about solutions & options
● Act
“Can-do” Attitude
Just Push “Pause”
● Learn to pause
● Get control
● Think about how you want to respond by using the Human Toolbox:
✓ Self-Awareness ✓ Conscience Imagination ✓ Willpower
12. Proactive ?
● Taking conscious control over your life, setting goals and working to achieve them.
● Instead of reacting to events and waiting for opportunities, you go out and create
your own events and opportunities.
● Instead of merely reacting to events as they happen, you consciously engineer your
own events.
Being proactive means that...
13. How One can be a Proactive
● Make small promises and keep them.
● Be a light, not a judge.
● Be a model, not a critic.
● Be part of the solution, not part of the problem.
● When you make a mistake, acknowledge it instantly, correct and learn from it.
● Don’t get into blaming and accusing mode.
● Work on things you have control over.
14. Self Assessment to be a Proactive
● How we Make and Keep Commitments?
● How do we handle traffic jam?
● How do we react to irate customer?
● How do you react to upset relative?
● How we view our problems?
● Where we focus our energies?
15. Activity
● On your whiteboards, write down 5 reactive phrases.
● Below each reactive phrase, re-write it to become proactive.
● For example, you could write “I can’t function early in the morning” as your reactive
phrase.
● To make it proactive, you would re-write it to become “I will function early in the
morning if I do the following”
