Definition:
Organizational design is a step-by-step methodology which identifies
dysfunctional aspects of work flow, procedures, structures and systems,
realigns them to fit current business realities/goals and then develops
plans to implement the new changes. The process focuses on improving
both the technical and people side of the business.
Principles of Organization Design
1. Declare amnesty for the past.
2. Design with DNA.
3. Fix the structure last, not first.
4. Make the most of top talent.
5. Focus on what you can control.
6. Promote accountability.
7. Benchmark sparingly, if at all
8. Let the “lines and boxes” fit your company’s purpose.
9. Accentuate the informal.
10. Build on your strength.
How to Evaluate the Success or Failure of an
Organization
• You must constantly monitor the success of your small business. It can
be difficult to tell how well you are doing because you are wrapped up
in the daily functioning of your company. While looking at your
profits -- or lack therof -- can be a way to measure success, you must
look at a broader range of indicators. Profitable businesses may have
failure lurking around the corner, and unprofitable businesses may be
on the verge of profitability.
