Introduction
A disruptive technology is a technology that, when introduced, either radically transforms
markets, creates completely new markets or destroys existing markets for other
technologies.
This document summarizes the characteristics and advantages of a new disruptive foil
technology that is bound to become the future standard for, for example:
 the preservation of outdoor wooden items such as window and door frames
 coating of any substrate material, such as steel, aluminium, wood, concrete, etc.
 anti-fouling coatings for ships and yachts
 waterproof sealing of concrete walls, floors, etc.
 the protection of items against mechanical, chemical and/or electrical influences
 chemical bonding of surfaces
The new, disruptive, foil technology is tentatively referred to as the Elastofoil technology.
Problems
The problems associated with the application of wet coatings (paints) for the preservation of
outdoor items are widely known and include the need to apply more than one layer, waiting
times between the application of layers, the need for sanding (with the associated dust
problem) between layers and the difficulty of bridging gaps and crevices.
Therefore, it is not a surprise that the use of foils to coat/laminate components was
introduced as an alternative for the application of paint systems. The use of a foil coating in
principle eliminates the above-mentioned curing/drying/waiting time, dust contamination
and inability to close gaps.
However, so far the available foil coatings did not live up to the expectations. The main
shortcomings of the present foil coatings are associated with bonding and cracking due to
insufficient elasticity.
Solution
The Elastofoil technology provides the solution that was long overdue and that eliminates all
the barriers that prevented a massive breakthrough of the foil coating technology.
The company that will own the intellectual property rights related to the Elastofoil

technology will be positioned to own or dominate a significant segment of the global
coatings industry. Since the Elastofoil technology is very versatile the size of this segment is
likely to extend well beyond the obvious foil coating applications as envisaged today.
The Elastofoil technology and its benefits
The Elastofoil technology comprises an elastic epoxy foil.
Elastic epoxy foils are new and are protected by a PCT patent application that is in the post-
examiner stage.
The Elastofoil technology enables the production of elastic epoxy foils in a wide range of:
 thicknesses
 elasticity
 reactivity
 adhesive properties
 colors
 surface textures
The Elastofoil foils can also be:
 shaped/machined
 repaired
It goes without saying that the possibility to vary the aforementioned characteristics/
properties opens the road to a virtually infinite number of different Elastofoil products,
which in turn can tackle a very wide array of coating requirements.
Due to this versatility the Elastofoil technology has the potential to create a new industry of
its own.
The Elastofoil technology provides options to vary the properties across the thickness of the
elastic foil for example from a reactive adhesive elastic epoxy at the bottom surface of the
foil to a fully cured elastic top layer. In this way the self adhesive properties are inherent to
the Elastofoil.
While it is obvious that the Elastofoil technology makes it possible to produce elastic epoxy
foil coatings that have very strong adhesive properties, it also allows the production of
elastic epoxy foils with weak adhesive properties. The latter can be of interest, for example,
when the Elastofoil is used as an anti-fouling coating on the hulls of ships and yachts. The
anti-fouling elastic epoxy foil is applied to the hull of a boat or yacht. Also depending on
whether the (top layer) of the anti-fouling foil is doped with constituents that slow down the

adherence and growth of marine biofoulig, sooner or later the hull will have a significant
degree of marine biofouling. At that point in time the hull can be cleaned by stripping the
Elastofoil anti-fouling foil coating from the hull including all barnacles and other marine
fouling that are attached to the foil. Since the anti-fouling Elastofoil material is specially
designed with weak adhesive properties, the stripping can be achieved quite easily. That
leaves a clean hull that is almost ready to be laminated again with a fresh layer of the anti-
fouling Elastofoil material.
The Elastofoil technology also comprises embodiments consisting of an elastic epoxy foil
with self-healing properties, which, when punctured has a self-repairing mechanism to close
the puncture hole.
The options provided by the Elastofoil technology and the products that can be derived
based on these options are too numerous to list in this brief document.
Intellectual Property Rights
The protection of the Elastofoil technology is covered by a PCT patent application with
application number PCT/NL2010/000133. The examiner’s statement confirms that all twelve
claims of this application comply with the criteria of novelty, inventive step and industrial
applicability. The national entries in all the relevant countries will be initiated shortly.
Intentions of the IP Owner
It is the intention of the inventor to outlicense the intellectual property rights on an
exclusive basis to a major player in the coatings industry who can then use it and sublicense
it at their discretion. However, the inventor is also open to an outright sale of the intellectual
property rights.
