They assumed that I was uneducated and not smart enough to hold a job, but I have an MBA from Harvard.” “ A lot of people see African Americans on the news committing crimes and assume that all African Americans are criminals”.

Most interviewers are aware of their biases. Bias can exist in the interviewer and the candidate. An interviewer who has developed their cultural competencies will do a better job of managing their biases. Asking candidates about their strengths and weaknesses are effective inclusion questions. Building a welcoming relationship with all applicants before you jump into the questions is a good practice for interviewers. It is OK to alter the job requirements in order to hire a diverse candidate. Once an interviewer is aware that bias exists at the start of an interview, their bias will no longer get in the way of their evaluation of an applicant. An interviewer’s reaction to an applicant is easily hidden from an applicant. Quiz Diversity. It’s A Business Opportunity!
