Nursing Values Pledge
I pledge, God helping me, to uphold the essence of nursing which is to provide selfless care to my
patients, their families and to the whole community. I will not treat my patients as just numbers; but,
will give each and everyone of them special attention and care as I would give to my loved ones. I will
work tirelessly and relentlessly to help promote wellness and illness prevention to the populace. I will
be a compassionate, nurturing and dedicated nurse. I will be committed to paying special attention to all
of my patients regardless of their race, gender and social or economic status. I will work effectively
with other health care practitioners to ensure the well being of my patients. Respecting the rights and
dignity of my patients will be my topmost priority. I will not to allow personal or family issues interfere
with my duties. I will be a good patient educator and advocate and speak out against any wrongdoing. I
will continually strive for personal and professional growth, and will keep learning new advanced skills
that would enable me provide the best of patient care.

Philosophy of Nursing
Florence Nightingale believed nursing was a call from God and that the sick deserved civilized care,
regardless of their station in life. She knew that cleanliness; fresh air, sanitation, comfort and socialization
were necessary to healing. Nursing is all about being a people’s person, caring and extremely patient. The
ability to truly show a person that you care involves interacting with that person on a spiritual level, and
this level of interaction provides a therapeutic basis to promote trust thereby aiding in the healing process.
Without this therapeutic environment, complete healing is inhibited. In nursing, a patient is an individual,
family, specific population or community with unique health needs, influenced by cultural, ethnic, social,
economic, developmental, educational, linguistic and spiritual factors. Furthermore, the patient is entitled
to respect, dignity, privacy and confidentiality in a caring and healing environment, and deserves to be
fully informed, educated and involved in all health care decisions. A nurse strives to establish a trusting
relationship with the patient and their family, to work as a collaborative team to continuously improve the
health and well being of their patient, and incorporate evidence based practice in the development of
standard of care. Nursing would be my way of giving back to society. To be clinically competent and
exhibit caring behavior, which is guided by ethical principles.

To Whom It May Concern,
I am compiling this message in order to recommend Violet N. Nnaemeka for her nursing career. I worked
with Violet
for over 140 hours as an internship with me over the summer. I work on a very busy Internal Medicine/
Telemetry
inpatient nursing unit. Violet cared for 4 patients at a time. She is a very kind, compassionate and
professional person.
She was always prompt. She always put her patients first. She did get recognized with written compliment
card from a
patient that she was caring for. Violet believes in policies and best practice acts.
I feel confident that violet would take very good care of her patients in any setting. thank you for your time.

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
This purpose of this letter is to recommend Violet Nnaemeka, RN, for a nursing position. Violet spent a
portion of her
senior practicum with me as fulfillment for her graduation from Ursuline College School of Nursing. I
work on a busy Med
Surg unit at a large inner city hospital caring for critically ill patients diagnosed with a large variety of
comorbidities. Violet
cared for four of these patients at a time doing assessments, administering medications, doing dressing
changes /
treatments, nursing education, communicating with family members and all other aspects of evidence
based
practice. She also received a "caregiver appreciation" note from one of her patients while working with me
which has not
happened with any other nursing student I've precepted.
Violet is a gentle, compassionate and professional nurse who would be an asset to any health care facility.
Sincerely,
Jennifer McEndree RN, CMSRN

Letter of Recommendation

Ursuline College
Office of Undergraduate Admissions

Pepper Pike, OH 44124
Violet Uluocha has asked that I write a letter of reference for her as she applies for admission to Ursuline College. I came to
know Violet a year and a half ago when she attended Presentation College in Aberdeen, South Dakota, and am happy to write a
recommendation for her.
Violet came to Presentation College in South Dakota from New York City in the fall of 2010. For most people, a move such as
this would have been a true culture shock. But Violet embraced the rural atmosphere and adapted well. She made numerous
friends and became active in our campus ministry program. She was truly an asset to our student population.
Academically, Violet excelled. She was not afraid to ask questions when necessary, and she was willing to spend the time needed
to study. As a non-traditional age student from a metropolitan area, she was able to add a different perspective to classroom
discussions. Her Presentation College transcript is evidence of Violet’s desire to obtain her degree.
As the Director of Student Services and Activities, I came to know Violet especially well when she moved into campus housing
and became a resident assistant. As the person in charge of residence life, I worked closely with Violet both in her role as an RA
and as a resident student. She took her resident assistant job seriously; I could always depend on her to do her job well.
If I were an admissions representative at Ursuline College, I would not hesitate to accept Violet Uluocha as a student. She is
academically solid and a well-rounded young woman. She would be a positive addition to your student population.
Sincerely,
Doris Stusiak

Accountability and Responsibility
¤ I have begun to learn the importance of being extra careful in caring for my
patients as one mistake could be very fatal.

Final Reflection
I am so excited that I am at this stage whereby I am writing a final reflection as part of the
completion of my nursing education. I am grateful to The Most High God, Ursuline College;
it’s array of knowledgeable and excellent tutors as well as all the excellent clinical instructors
and preceptors that I worked with in the clinical settings for their help in nurturing and building
up my confidence and skills as I gradually made steps to become a nurse.
Before nursing school, my perception of nursing was that of bedside patient care,
dispensing of medication and helping with ADLs, halfway through nursing school; especially at
the onset of clinical rotations, I began to see the real face of what nursing is; a thankless
profession. However, being thanked by patients or their families is not what nursing is about.
Nursing is about caring for your patient and their families with utmost respect and genuineness
of heart using evidence-based practices. I am very grateful for the Dedicated Education Unit
clinical experience, which helped me tremendously to practice concepts and skills thought in
class most effectively. I am proud of my practical achievements and academic excellence
during my nursing education, as those were part of my main goals at the start of my nursing
studies.
In my journey through nursing school this past couple of year, I have truly learned the
meaning of what a good nurse is; which is being compassionate, empathetic and treats the
patients with dignity and respect. I am determined to be a good nurse.

  • 3. Nursing Values Pledge I pledge, God helping me, to uphold the essence of nursing which is to provide selfless care to my patients, their families and to the whole community. I will not treat my patients as just numbers; but, will give each and everyone of them special attention and care as I would give to my loved ones. I will work tirelessly and relentlessly to help promote wellness and illness prevention to the populace. I will be a compassionate, nurturing and dedicated nurse. I will be committed to paying special attention to all of my patients regardless of their race, gender and social or economic status. I will work effectively with other health care practitioners to ensure the well being of my patients. Respecting the rights and dignity of my patients will be my topmost priority. I will not to allow personal or family issues interfere with my duties. I will be a good patient educator and advocate and speak out against any wrongdoing. I will continually strive for personal and professional growth, and will keep learning new advanced skills that would enable me provide the best of patient care. 3
  • 4. Philosophy of Nursing Florence Nightingale believed nursing was a call from God and that the sick deserved civilized care, regardless of their station in life. She knew that cleanliness; fresh air, sanitation, comfort and socialization were necessary to healing. Nursing is all about being a people’s person, caring and extremely patient. The ability to truly show a person that you care involves interacting with that person on a spiritual level, and this level of interaction provides a therapeutic basis to promote trust thereby aiding in the healing process. Without this therapeutic environment, complete healing is inhibited. In nursing, a patient is an individual, family, specific population or community with unique health needs, influenced by cultural, ethnic, social, economic, developmental, educational, linguistic and spiritual factors. Furthermore, the patient is entitled to respect, dignity, privacy and confidentiality in a caring and healing environment, and deserves to be fully informed, educated and involved in all health care decisions. A nurse strives to establish a trusting relationship with the patient and their family, to work as a collaborative team to continuously improve the health and well being of their patient, and incorporate evidence based practice in the development of standard of care. Nursing would be my way of giving back to society. To be clinically competent and exhibit caring behavior, which is guided by ethical principles. 4

  • 12. Letter of Recommendation 12 January 31, 2012 Ursuline College Office of Undergraduate Admissions 2550 Lander Road Pepper Pike, OH 44124 Violet Uluocha has asked that I write a letter of reference for her as she applies for admission to Ursuline College. I came to know Violet a year and a half ago when she attended Presentation College in Aberdeen, South Dakota, and am happy to write a recommendation for her. Violet came to Presentation College in South Dakota from New York City in the fall of 2010. For most people, a move such as this would have been a true culture shock. But Violet embraced the rural atmosphere and adapted well. She made numerous friends and became active in our campus ministry program. She was truly an asset to our student population. Academically, Violet excelled. She was not afraid to ask questions when necessary, and she was willing to spend the time needed to study. As a non-traditional age student from a metropolitan area, she was able to add a different perspective to classroom discussions. Her Presentation College transcript is evidence of Violet’s desire to obtain her degree. As the Director of Student Services and Activities, I came to know Violet especially well when she moved into campus housing and became a resident assistant. As the person in charge of residence life, I worked closely with Violet both in her role as an RA and as a resident student. She took her resident assistant job seriously; I could always depend on her to do her job well. If I were an admissions representative at Ursuline College, I would not hesitate to accept Violet Uluocha as a student. She is academically solid and a well-rounded young woman. She would be a positive addition to your student population. Sincerely, Doris Stusiak Director of Student Services and Activities Presentation College Office: (605) 229-8395 Cell: (605) 228-4619

Health Promotion, Maintenance, and Restoration of the Individual Client Accountability and Responsibility ¤ I have begun to learn the importance of being extra careful in caring for my patients as one mistake could be very fatal. Critical Thinking ¤ I am still working on my critical thinking abilities. Sometimes, I find myself not thinking like a nurse would given certain situations. However, I am glad with my progress so far, compared to before I started this program. Communication ¤ I have begun to communicate freely with my classmates, instructors, and preceptors. I used to be very shy. I especially love the end of shift reports that our clinical instructors make us give, it teaches me a lot. Knowledge of the Sciences and Arts ¤ I have begun to connect all that I learned in my Anatomy class with true life situations. Nursing Interventions ¤ I have begun to learn that the act of nursing is more than just passing medication to patients. I am learning that nursing is taking care of my patient’s physical, as well as emotional needs. It warmed my heart when a simple task like giving a bath made my patient so happy. 15

Evolving Concepts: Health Promotion, Maintenance, and Restoration of the Acutely Adult Accountability and Responsibility ¤ I have realized that it’s important not only to arrive on time for my shift but to wholeheartedly care for my patients as I would care for my family or close friends. Critical Thinking ¤ I have improved a lot on my critical thinking abilities. Gradually, I am learning to think as a nurse would when faced with different tasks and have to prioritize. Communication ¤ I can write a very through nursing note now. Knowledge of the Sciences and Arts ¤ I now understand why we had to take classes in anatomy and physiology before starting the program. I am putting the pieces all together and it is making a lot of sense. Nursing Interventions ¤ I actually draw blood for a lab work this week, and gave a fleet enema. It has finally dawned on me that I am on my merry way to becoming a nurse. 16

Critical Thinking ¤ My improved score on ATI practice tests attest to the fact that I am gradually becoming a proficient critical thinker. Communication ¤ I am gradually opening up to talking with my patients and their family. Knowledge of the Sciences and Arts ¤ The human body is one big complex machine. I am still amazed at how complicated it all is. Nursing Interventions ¤ I suctioned a patient twice. It was a very scary experience. Thought I was killing my patient when he started coughing as I inserted the catheter. 17

  • 26. Final Reflection I am so excited that I am at this stage whereby I am writing a final reflection as part of the completion of my nursing education. I am grateful to The Most High God, Ursuline College; it’s array of knowledgeable and excellent tutors as well as all the excellent clinical instructors and preceptors that I worked with in the clinical settings for their help in nurturing and building up my confidence and skills as I gradually made steps to become a nurse. Before nursing school, my perception of nursing was that of bedside patient care, dispensing of medication and helping with ADLs, halfway through nursing school; especially at the onset of clinical rotations, I began to see the real face of what nursing is; a thankless profession. However, being thanked by patients or their families is not what nursing is about. Nursing is about caring for your patient and their families with utmost respect and genuineness of heart using evidence-based practices. I am very grateful for the Dedicated Education Unit clinical experience, which helped me tremendously to practice concepts and skills thought in class most effectively. I am proud of my practical achievements and academic excellence during my nursing education, as those were part of my main goals at the start of my nursing studies. In my journey through nursing school this past couple of year, I have truly learned the meaning of what a good nurse is; which is being compassionate, empathetic and treats the patients with dignity and respect. I am determined to be a good nurse. 26
