Our view is that the first models equipped with DSRC enabling Vehicle-to-Passenger
communication will be introduced in 2017 with penetration at this point at ~5%. As consumer
awareness of the benefits of V2V and V2P for safety and convenience increases we expect the
penetration of DSRC in new smartphones to grow with an average rate of 27.7% by 2029. This
will have a huge impact on revenues from DSRC-equipped smartphones which will amount to
$35.9 billion in 2029.

The luxury car segment is witnessing significant adoption in APAC. For instance, China is
expected to surpass the US in terms of luxury car units sold in 2017. India is also witnessing a
rise in the adoption of luxury cars. For instance, the sales of luxury cars is expected to be more
than double by 2020 in India. The rising disposable income and the increasing young population
are the main factors behind the increasing growth of this segment in India and China. China is the
top market for Jaguar. Mercedes-Benz is expected to become the top luxury car OEM in the
world during the forecast period, owing to the increased sales from China.
Developed regions like Japan witnessed the introduction of V2X technology through OEMs like
Toyota. For instance, Toyota included V2V and V2I communication as a part of the new ITS
safety package in its three models in Japan in 2015. This new ITS safety package uses Japan’s
standardized ITS frequency of 760 MHz to receive and share data with external infrastructure and
other vehicles. The rising focus of automotive OEMs toward V2X technology is fueling the growth
of the automotive V2X market in the region.
Though the rate of adoption of in-vehicle connectivity solutions is slow, the market is expected to
witness strong growth during the forecast period, owing to the growing demand from emerging
markets such as India, China, Thailand, and Indonesia. Due to the growing demand for telematics
and built-in connectivity, OEMs such as VW, Ford, and GM are equipping their mid-range
vehicles with in-vehicle entertainment and information systems as a customary component. This
will allow APAC to grow faster. Therefore, APAC is expected to experience faster growth than
other regions during the forecast period.

9.1.5 BMW’s Role in the V2V and V2I Market
Bayerische Motoren Werke AG (BMW) is a German automotive manufacturing company; it sells
in-vehicle connectivity in its BMW, Mini, Rolls Royce and Motorrad brands. BMW is the best-
selling premium brand globally, and its focus on the higher segments of the passenger car market
enables the company to use more expensive technologies, such as carbon fibre. These
technologies combine high performance with superior efficiency. Much like other German
automotive companies, BMW has played a pioneering role in the development of high
performance, high-efficiency vehicles.
The latest addition to the set of telematics services provided by BMW is TeleServices. BMW’s
TeleServices establishes direct communication between the vehicle and BMW. The aim of this
service is to facilitate the maintenance and repair of the vehicle as a large amount of vehicle
information is fed electronically into BMW’s system.
BMW's V2V projects are branded as "Car-to-X" technology program which enables
communication between vehicles and between vehicles and traffic infrastructure using a wireless
LAN or mobile network connections.
BMW has identified at least five separate applications for V2V which the company tested as part
of the 2013 a pilot program SIM-TD:
• Intersection Assistant: informs the driver about the position of other vehicles in an
upcoming intersection. The technology will use alarms and warning lights to warn the
driver's attention in case of emergency.
• Left-Turn Assistant: this application works using V2V to determine if there's too much
oncoming traffic for a driver to turn across lanes - even if the vehicles are not yet in the
driver’s line of sight. The technology works by alerting the driver with alarms and displays.
• Emergency Vehicle Warning: could be used by ambulances, fire trucks, police cars,
and other emergency vehicles. BMW's system keeps special tabs on such vehicles, and
when they're en route to an event, Emergency Vehicle Warning lets others drivers know
to yield.
• Local Hazard Warning: When the system senses traffic congestion or road hazards, it
alerts nearby drivers so they have they can make alternate travel plans.
• Traffic Light Assistant: this product tells drivers whether the upcoming traffic light will be
red or green according to data gathered by the vehicle and the others around it.
