The platforms for vehicle OS are either QNX, Windows CE, or Linux. However, Android (A Linux
based OS) offers lots of features to vehicle infotainment systems such as application support, touch,
and notifications. As a result, the automobile manufacturers want to control the OS on which their
products run, in turn, using it as a product differentiator or as a competitive edge over its competitors.
Therefore, we expect this development in the OS segment to drive the global connected car market
as it will give manufacturers more freedom to integrate connectivity functions with other functions
and move toward a holistic system that will drive autonomous vehicles in the future.
6.1.2 Restraints and Challenges
• Design complexity and technological challenges
Vendors are facing challenge in terms of designing a user interface that is affordable, less distracting,
simple, and accessible. As applications of automotive connectivity solutions increase, the complexity
of the system design required to manage these applications also grow. Advances in technology,
immense range of features, and diverse connectivity options have made telematics and infotainment
systems sophisticated. The automotive segment saw adoption transformation from radio/audio
applications in early years to driver assistance in recent past. The greater the number of applications
the more complex the design. In addition, the number of software solutions needed for each
application makes automotive connectivity systems complex. Hence, the drivers need to learn how
to efficiently handle these complex solutions to gain maximum benefit, and this is a challenge for the
global connected car market.
Internet protocol (IP) is a set of rules that define the communication of devices over a network. The
routing function of IP ensures the connectivity of the device over a network. Migration from IPv4 to
IPv6: Until 2012, M2M devices were using IPv4 for communication. However, after the launch of
IPv6, operators are shifting from IPv4 to IPv6 architecture. The transition of IPv4 to IPv6 will be a
long process and there will be coexistence of both protocols. As a result, M2M communications may
face some difficulty due to the slow transition process.
● There are a lot of players involved in setting standards, system integration, and
other interfaces. These players should be provided with a common platform to
maintain uniformity in the service offerings.
● The gateways used for M2M communications should be optimized to handle a
large number of packet data transfers between devices
● Potential security breach may impact technology adoption
Automotive telematics applications for in-vehicle information systems use wireless communication
systems that are prone to hacking and theft of information. These modern systems offer Internet

Company Overview
Volvo has been operating since 1927. Volvo Cars is one of the most well-
known and respected car brands in the world with sales of 503,127 in 2015
in about 100 countries. Volvo Cars has been under the ownership of the
Zhejiang Geely Holding of China since 2010. It formed part of the Swedish
Volvo Group until 1999, when the company was bought by Ford Motor
Company of the US. In 2010, Volvo Cars was acquired by Geely Holding.
Apart from manufacturing passenger cars, Volvo is one of the most
recognised leaders in trucks, heavy duty machinery, construction equipment,
and buses. Putting connected car technologies in these sectors would be
useful for the consumers, as maintaining a fleet of trucks requires technology
and resources.

which is digitally enabled sensing, will be available across all the Mahindra mobility products from
commercial and passenger vehicles to tractors and construction equipment.
11.12.4 Tech Mahindra Analysis
Tech Mahindra is collaborating with 8 OEMs and 4 global suppliers in the automotive sector. The
company’s current focus in the connected car market is to invest heavily on NMACS (Networking,
Mobility, Analytics, Cloud and Security) which is bound to transform the consumer and business
landscape in the future. The company is working on enhancing and delivering end-to-end connected
vehicle solutions. The integration of analytics support to the service delivery platform, eCall and
back-end infrastructure will be of prime importance. The latter infrastructure is necessary for incident
location detection for shorter turnaround time and integration of real time content to the vehicle’s
backbone.
Tech Mahindra will continue to enjoy a strong position in the connected car market. Over the next
five years the company will benefit from global economic recovery and higher penetration rates in
developed countries. Beyond this period, into the mid-term, Tech Mahindra’s home market, India,
will see substantial growth. The company is projected to be the preferred supplier in India from a
consumer as well as an OEM point of view. Moreover, the company is expanding its presence abroad
and mainly in Brazil after the acquisition of the Brazilian SAP consulting provider Complex IT in
February 2013, as well as signing joint venture agreements in the Middle East, Mexico and South
Korea in 2014. Last year, the company acquired Lightbridge Communications Corporation and
