Chapter 1- (page 26) Emotional Intelligence Journal - How you are feeling now
I am feeling very confident about college. I know that feeling confident about
college works best for me because it gives me that boost I need to complete my work,
get to know my professor, and classmates. College is a more friendly and helpful place
than I imagined, and it lets me know that college life is defiantly for me and can help me
in my future career.
If you are shy, don’t like to speak up in class or don’t really understand what’s going on
in class there are many ways you can fix those problems or either get help in some sort of way.
For example if you don’t like to speak in front of a bunch of people and your confuse about what
lesson your professor was teaching you can always schedule to see the professor after class, get
tutored, or even get together with one or two classmates.
2. Chapter 2 - (page 58) Emotional Intelligence Journal – How you feel about your time management
Time management to me is very important because it helps balances what you need to get
done versus what can wait till later and to me that can be very helpful if you truly understand the
meaning and method of time management. I personally like to challenge my time management
and make sure I stay on top of that because it can keep me and my life on track therefore I wont
be all over the place like some people with poor time management skills.
My most demanding time would have to go to my school. When taking four classes five
days a week that consumes a lot of time to be in school and it also takes a lot of time when home
studying and doing homework. Which to me can sometimes get a little frustrating because when
your home you sometimes want to just relax be lazy or hang with friends but to me I try to look
at the bigger picture and tell myself that school wont last forever. So at the end my career will
make me feel much better and all that time will be worth it.
3. Chapter 3 – (page 87) Emotional Intelligence Journal – Your interactions with others
I believe that I can relate with all sorts of people because I know how to adjust my
attitude to sooth others and I make people feel comfortable and relax. I guess you can say I am
some what a people person and I am happy with that. Some types of people I get along with the
best are talkative people, funny people, and people who are outgoing and love to have fun.
Basically people who I can interact with as people who I can interact with as well. So it doesn’t
feel like being with a brick wall.
Even though I can get along with and interact with all sorts of people I still have some
people that even if you try with them you still cant get a reaction out of them and it very
annoying. Like the people who gives attitude, shy, and people who doesn’t like to interact back.
Reason why those people irk me in a way is because I cant do anything with them like talk or
have any kind of fun. But the best way to handle these types people is to still try and
communicate with them and break them until they get comfortable and loosen up that way they
will communicate back and start having fun.
4. Chapter 4 - (page 120) Emotional Intelligence Journal – Make a wiser choice
One decision I made that I wish I could have handles differently was after high school I
went to a college too far from my house and driving there everyday was a hassle and tiring and
to top it off traffic was always horrible I could never find my self on time at all. So eventually I
got frustrated and fed up that after the first semester I stop going> after I stop going I ended up
taking two in a half years off basically doing nothing productive as far as an education. And it
pretty much suck that I made that weird decision to go somewhere too far that I got fed up with
traffic and driving there.
If I could approach the situation all over again I would have just went to the college that
all my friends went to which is 5 minutes away from my house and I would be done with my
class. I would even be working on my career job just like some of the students I went to school
with or even getting a higher degree. But I come to realize everything happens for a reason but I
would defiantly have not taken a break that long and if I could go back I would.
5. Chapter 5 - (page 156) Emotional Intelligence Journal – Reading challenges
The current course that gives me a sort of reading challenge is my English class. The
reason is not because the reading is difficult or nothing, I know how to read but because I believe
the professor expects way too much from a low level class. For example the professor will say
write a paragraph, give you the topic and you can put you best work into this paragraph even get
help from the tutoring LRC building and his grading critic is just so ridiculous he will say that
the paper is horrible. Which just bothers me because it like no matter what you will never get it
right.
Some techniques that I learned from chapter 5 is to understand how to place your words
and how to learn to look up words in a dictionary so that when you come across big words you
can already know the meaning instead of having to stop from reading to figure out what a word
means. That way you don’t have to worry about loosing you thought of concentrations.
6. Chapter 6 - (page 184) Emotional Intelligence Journal – Understanding your needs and making changes
In my first semester there was a class where my professor was just so boring and her
voice was so dull and slow and out of life it was like listening to a 101 year old lady speak. And
it was extremely had to listen and understand what type of notes to write down because when
ever she was speaking it went in one ear and out the other or you probably fell asleep in her class
or just say dream. I felt like if only this lady can add some different tones in her voice and seem a
little more interesting I could actually understand and focus a little more on my notes and
learning.
Some note taking skills that I can or could have used to make things better for my
understanding is getting with a class mate and comparing what little notes we have or basically
start out own study group where we can make our own notes the best way we can. Its better to
have something and no something then to not have or know anything at all. Or we can have a
discussion with the professor to see if that would help in any way.
7. Chapter 7- (page 218) Emotional Intelligence Journal – How feelings connect study success
I remember when I was taking the FCAT for the very first time I was so stress because of
all the stress my teachers, family, and even the media was putting on us students who was taking
this crazy test. There was so many rules and preparation that went into this FCAT. For example
getting a good night rest the night before, making sure we don’t skip breakfast, when taking the
test phones can even be on vibrate or else everyone test will not count and even keeping on head
forward because it they teacher thinks were looking around too much we get our test taken away
and we get kicked out the room. It is just a stressful day and although I pass the first time it was
just crazy period.
What help me get through this day was to just relax do my normal activities the night
before and basically I just ignored all the hype behind this FCAT because it makes people bomb
the test just cause you say they cant. So I kept to my self and tried to take the test like any other
important test that I have taken before and not worrying about what anyone else had to say.
8. Chapter 8- (page 252) Emotional Intelligence Journal – Test types
The test type I feel most comfortable with is the multiple choice test and the reason why
is because it gives me about three or four different choices to choose from and most of the time if
I have actually studies then one or the answers will stick out like a sore thumb. Also I im not so
lucj I can use the process of elimination to get rid of all the crazy answers leaving me with most
likely a 50/50chance of getting the answer right and once I eliminate two I can basically make an
educated guess if I still don’t know the answer. Im pretty sure allot of students will agree with me
when I say multiple choice because it just a lot less stressful. Plus its also easier for the professor
to grade especially when you have 120students.
One type of test that I seem to have a hard time getting good grades on a test with is fill
in the blank. To me its like my worst nightmare especially for a math test forget about it I rather
just turn in the test with just my name and not bother wasting time. Fill in the blank the ones with
no option of what the answer can be is the worst and I remember a couple test that I have taken
like that and I basically fail that test because its just not my thing. My mind always seem to go
black just like the question.
9. Chapter 9 - (page 281) Emotional Intelligence Journal – Your experience with prejudice
I have never really experience a serious situation where I have been seriously
discriminated about except when I walk into a clothing store with my cousin and we have our big
bags and her twin stroller. Although we have her kids in it I guess people feel like there are a lot
of compartments where we can possibly steal something. So we get asked through out the whole
time if we need and help with anything or just get that weird vibe and sometimes it’s a little
annoying. The reason why I don’t look at it that serious is simply because I use to work at a
clothing store and majority of the time the people who steals and get away with it something is
usually people with big purses and strollers rather their black white blue green. Although mostly
black people get harass and looked at a little more tan any other race.
10. Chapter 10 - (page 312) Emotional Intelligence Journal – Addiction
Addiction to me is a very dangerous situation no matter if it to drugs food or sex ect. I
feel that it is very sad because depending on what a person addiction is an addiction can destroy
ones life and others around them and because a lot of people who are addictive to something
sometime end up dealing with the addiction alone because no one wants to be involved with such
a horrible thing. And for some people who are addicted to something they themselves don’t want
people around them or if they do want help its very hard for them. I believe addiction is a sign of
depression and then need to want to be loved in some sort of way.
I know a couple of people that I grew up with in and dangerous drug addiction and for me
to actually know someone like that is a terrible thing to see. When some one is addicted to drug
depending on what it is it messes up your life to the point where your living on the streets by
your self begging for money to get more drugs and sleeping under a bridge or a park bench. The
best possible thing you can do is offer to take them to rehab because it not like you can say here
is some money go buy clothes and get food because they wont do that. So I would offer rehab
help or just pray that one day god can get them off drugs and off the streets. That’s the only thing
anyone can do..
11. Chapter 11 - (page 342) Emotional Intelligence Journal – You and credit
I am a credit user I use my credit to buy furniture and appliances when I need to it pretty
good because I don’t have to pay right away. But when I was 18 I was a even bigger credit user
and one who didn’t use my credit for smart choices and I truly regretted some of the dumb
purchases I made because I have nothing to show for any of those credit use now. When I was 18
I never paid my balance in full I always paid them minimum not realizing I was pay just about
twice as much instead of paying in full when I should have. Always trying to avoid a bill that
will never go anywhere but on your credit score really isn’t worth it in the long run. Especially
when in the future your trying to buy a house, car, or even when you really need a credit card.
So now I take my credit use more seriously now that im around that age to realize that I
need a house and my credit score to be in good standing so when I need something I can get it
with no hassle. I would recommend to anyone to just take a second sometimes and think about
what ever credit purchase you make to just make sure you pay on time and in full. Therefore in
the future you wont have to go through what a lot of other problems people with bad credit go
through.
12. Chapter 12 - (page 369) Emotional Intelligence Journal – Revisit your personal mission
In this course I believe I’ve learned a lot and I am very glad I took this course because it
help me to grow and understand a lot of things. Some of the things I learned is how to understand
myself as far as what career choices I can take and what to expect out of my career choices. Also
getting a better understanding of college life and how to handle myself through out my school
years in college. I also learned different types of learning techniques that I didn’t know about
before and how to choose the best techniques for myself so I can get better grades and relate to
my work much better.
