-And they gave me the moniker of
“AVATAR”.
-WHY Avatar?
-Well, I was beaten so hard that
I was that blue.

Duck tape squeezed my neck badly.
I tore the tape from my hands
with the help of a piece of pipe
that was in a room, and loosened
the duck tape on my eyes, so it
didn’t hurt so much. There was a
window in the room; one could
climb up and look out. I was
thus able to understand, if it
was day or night outside.
I will beat you until you stop
praying.
As a response to this,
«Gun-layer» started to pray even
louder.
Different people came to look at
“pravosek” [a member of the Right
Sector - a far-right Ukrainian
nationalist political party]. One
of the newcomers rushed at me
with a knife and wanted to cut
tattoos on me.
7.
- “What are you doing?” one
asked me. I didn't see this
person through the blindfold.
- “I have no idea. I was put
here, so now I'm sitting.”
- “You're lucky that we have
found you. They forgot about you.
You were in a resort there. And
now we'll start to work on you”.
During the last day of my
captivity I was working in the
kitchen, and after supper one of
the commanders told us that one of
us must be shot, and one released.
One of the commanders summoned
me. He asked me if I could be
exchanged for medications.
11.
During all this time I was not
allowed to use the toilet. Two
bottles of «Sitro» [Soda pop] and
“D uchess” [duchess pear] were
standing there. The drug-addicted
girl told me this was piss. Some
newcomers arrived. They didn’t
know, drank it, and they puked.
13.
I had ocular hypertension,
glaucoma. I was afraid that my
eye blood vessels would burst. I
asked the guard to loosen the
adhesive tape. I even began to
see the light with my right eye.
In about 20 minutes the group of
three men began to kick me,
accusing me of opening my eye.
I heard when one militant told
someone on the phone that nothing
was going as planned. And he and
his friend wanted to slip away in
an ambulance.
The militant was given a gun and
told that, if he wanted to be
released he should shoot his
fellows. Several others had
pulled the trigger. The gun was
not loaded.
... we were forced to kneel, the
press was around; locals walked
by, shouted, insulted us, threw
eggs, stones, all that came to
hand. If they hit legs, it hurt,
because I was wounded.
Also they cut fingers to the
bone, three times jabbed the awl
into the abdomen, and one time
into the toe. They thought that
the dollar in my wallet was a
password.
19.
Everyone was prohibited to sleep.
If a guard saw that someone
slept, he was beaten with baton
or electric shock machine. Or if
someone changed his location, he
received the same.
Then they brought one more person.
We gave him the callsign
«Makulatura» [Waste Paper],
because the neighbours informed on
him, telling that he had
publications of “Spilna Sprava”
[“Common Cause” - a Ukrainian
radical opposition group, which
came into existence in December
2010 during the 2010 Maidan
protests].

I was there and bragged to
someone that she broke four
sticks while beating one of the
victims, and she thinks I am a
“jerk”.
23.
They started to put the padded
jacket on me – my doublet (I
reconstruct armour)--,which they
found in my car, pasted on my
forehead a UA sticker, also found
in the car, tied my hands with a
belt and ordered me to stand up
straight and hold my feet
together, to stand at attention.
They placed me looking like that
under the LPR flag and joked that
it could be a good avatar
[profile photo in social media].
While I was carried along the
corridor one of women ran out and
started to beat me on the head
with a kettle, screaming that it
was all our fault. A whole family
with kids lived in one of the
rooms there. She wore a black
bandage - apparently one of her
natives was killed.

On Saturday evening the deputy
platoon commander`s assistant
walked in and said, “Write, and

commander went on a raid that day
and was wounded.

There were glass doors, and he
brought self-adhesive tape and
paint and forced me to make a
Russian flag. I did not get the
order of colours correctly and he
hit me with a rifle butt.
Those who were captured during
the curfew they called “robots”,
because they were forced to work
all the time.
29.
They kept me in a field. In the
middle of the field stood an iron
bed with springs, on which I
stayed. They did not chain me, as
there was nowhere to escape.
Blindfolded eyes, armed men. How
could I escape?
A guard came to us with a machine
gun, put a pack of cigarettes in
front of us and said: “It’s for
you. No offence but if the assault
starts, I have an order to kill
you.”
We were so weak that we could not
even stick a shovel into the
ground. Then they gave us tinned
meat and mivina [cheap instant
noodles], so that we had strength
to dig.
33.
They wanted to cut off my hand,
but I took it away and the axe
hit the asphalt. [The blows I
received were so strong that] I

husband that they would bring him
tinned meat of his wife.
They sat me in the way so my
husband could see, and the main
person shouted: “Bring me the
transparent plastic bag, I love
to watch when the eyes roll”. He
pulled the plastic bag over my
head and started to choke me,
shouting, “Speak, speak.” Each
time he held the bag longer and
longer, until I started to black
out.
37.

turn my face to the wall. I
refused to turn my face to the
wall; I thought that they would
shoot me right there. The wall
was just for shooting.
When riding in the car, the leader
ordered this guy to burn my ear to
the eardrum. The guy protested,
saying that the car would stink.
He brought a lighter to my ear. I
started to squeal and understood
that he burned not my ear but only
hair. I realized that I had to
play along.
… He came up to the camera and
said: “Well, let’s go, it’s
interesting to work with you”. I
asked: “It’s all about torture?”
He answered that he liked the
process itself.
41.
They beat us all night long,
tortured us, used electroshock,
extinguished cigarette butts on
our palms, staged electric chair
executions with the help of
dynamo, choked us until we lost
consciousness. When he choked me,
he saw a small chain, not golden,

lost consciousness. When I came
to, the chain was gone.

стят.
…He told me that they would make
me sit down at the computer and
search for Ukrainian patriots in
social media, set up meetings, and
that they would catch these people
(patriots). When they caught 4-5
people, they’d shoot them and
release my husband and me.
