What is Web 2.0 ?


Web 2.0 is the second generation of Web
application development that goes beyond
static pages to allow users to create content
and collaborate with one another via easy to
use, browser-based tools.
Why Web 2.0 ?


• Faculty wish to take advantage of Web 2.0
  tools that offer additional options to enhance
  teaching and appeal to different learning styles
• Students are already using Web 2.0
  technologies, especially social networking
• Web 2.0 tools can contribute to authentic
  assessment
Institutional Considerations


• Administrators have concerns related to
  privacy, data hosting, etc.
• Faculty need guidelines to choose and use
  Web 2.0 tools judiciously

Faculty and students alike need guidelines
for the use of Web 2.0 tools to avoid the
unintended consequences that may occur
with unplanned use
UMUC Guidelines and Web 2.0
• The confidentiality of student information is
  protected by FERPA, The Family Educational
  Rights and Privacy Act
    Students’ confidential information such as date of birth,
    addresses, and phone numbers and course-related data can
    not be disclosed
• Faculty need to have alternative assignments if
  students do not wish to use Web 2.0 tools
• All official information related to the course
  and students’ assignments must be in the
  WebTycho classroom, i.e. archived internally

• Use is usually free of charge
• Easy to use, usually without technical
  support
• Consideration of copyright and fair use
• Offers new functions and features

• Has a privacy option
    Terms of use allow for an alias
    Class activity is not viewable on the Web by the public
• Grading and assessment is always done in

• Instructor can administer, monitor, and
  control all class interaction taking place on
  the external site
• Cannot require students to use an external
  tool-be prepared to offer a substitute
  activity if this involves a graded activity
