2. Pinterest Announces Promoted Pins

• Pinterest announced that it will begin rolling out paid advertising
on their site
• Businesses will be able to use “Promoted Pins” by paying to
have pins pushed to the top of results and search categories.
• During the test period they will not initially collect money from
advertisers and will clearly label promoted pins as ads for all
users
• Pinterest CEO says that the pins will be tasteful and there will
be no pop-up ads
• The site will differentiate sponsored and organic pins
• Pinterest is experimenting with promoted pins with select
businesses for now, but will roll out to more businesses in the
future
3. Video Auto-Play Within Facebook
• Facebook has launched a test in which its mobile feed
will start auto-playing user-uploaded videos when
scrolled over
• Allow for News Feeds to be more engaging and
open the opportunity for video advertising
• Tested on a small percent of US iOS and Android
users for now
• Currently only for videos uploaded by users with
verified pages, brands and musicians
• Only works for videos uploaded directly to Facebook or
via Instagram (or apps of the like)
• Links to videos uploaded and embedded from other sites
(YouTube, etc.) will not auto-play
• No editing features for uploading
• The video only plays when you scroll over it and will
stop playing once it slips off the screen

• From an editorial POV, content being uploaded to Facebook with auto-play may increase interaction & views. The more
views / interactions, the more likely that videos will be seen in other’s news feeds

4. Facebook Makes Conversations More
Accessible – Including Private Conversations
• For select users (news organizations, select
brands), Facebook allows you to search all public
posts by keywords and data strings
• Public comments provide insight into who’s talking
about the topic
• Private comments are masked, but reveals
demographic information (age, gender, geography,
etc.)
• Rollout is starting with a small group of media
outlets, including Buzzfeed, CNN, NBC’s Today
Show, BSkyB and Slate
• Only available to trusted media partners for
now

API” and “Public Feed API”

5. Twitter’s New “Verified” Filter
• Twitter began rolling out two new filter tabs to
users with verified profiles
• Filtered: shows mentions based on
algorithm to filter and cut down spam
• Verified: shows interactions with other
verified profiles
• Easier for verified users to manage larger
conversations
• Mainly did this to appease celebrities to keep
them happy on Twitter
• Will reduce the amount of spam and
mentions from fans and increase
conversion and @replies with other
celebrities
• Not currently on mobile, planning to evolve

6. Offline Viewing Coming to YouTube
• YouTube announced that they will be launching
a new feature via their mobile application that
will enable users to watch videos offline
• Likely available in November, 2013
• Users can add videos to their mobile device to
watch offline, and saved for offline viewing
• Unlikely to include licensed movies and
music (for now)
• Content refreshes when internet connection
becomes available
