LinkedIn
By Yolanda R. Arrington

2. Social Media 101
• Twitter: cocktail party – Talk to everyone about various topics
• Facebook: house party – Only your inner circle gets an invitation*
• LinkedIn: office party – Industry-related & tasteful conversations
*Laura Labovich, Career Strategist
3. Twitter
• Decide who you want to be on Twitter
1. Will you post as an authority/expert on a topic?
2. Will you tell jokes or talk about your life?
3. Will you do a combination of both?
• Keep it short & sweet (140 characters)
• Make a decision and stick with it – deviating from your usual
“message” can lead to problems
4. Twitter
• YOU MAY DELETE A TWEET… BUT IT LIVES ON!
• Every tweet has its own unique URL and embed code which can be
copied, pasted and shared
5. Twitter
• YOU MAY DELETE A TWEET… BUT IT LIVES ON!
• Every tweet has its own unique URL and embed code which can be
copied, pasted and shared
• Twitter is now purging deleted tweets from its search database but
crafty Twitter users can take a screen grab of a tweet before you
delete it
7. Twitter
• Tweet first, follow later
• Many Twitter users will view you as a spammer if you follow a lot of
people before sending your first tweet
• You’ll quickly develop a following of like-minded people based on the
content of your tweets
8. Twitter
• What is a #hashtag?
• Words or phrases prefixed with the number or pound symbol (#)
which act as a metadata tag
• Include a hashtag somewhere in the 140 characters you’re allowed
to tweet
• Twitter users can search a specific #hashtag and see every tweet
containing that hashtag
9. Twitter
• What is a #hashtag?
• Hashtags help your tweets get a wider reach
• Use them correctly and use them often
• Most events, TV shows & popular topics have pre-set hashtags for
you to use (example: #SOTU for the State of the Union address)
10.
11. Twitter
• Why retweet?
• A retweet is like forwarding an email
• Twitter is a community. You’re tweeting your theories, thoughts &
ideas to like-minded individuals.
• Your tweets can give your followers more details about a subject or
point them in the direction of learning something new.
• The people you follow are also sharing ideas. Retweeting an
interesting tweet shows them you’re engaged in the Twitter
community.
12. Twitter
• Why retweet?
• A retweet can be an endorsement or a way to say to your
followers, “hey, isn’t this funny/interesting/inspirational (etc…)?”
• You may add your own comment to a retweet if it’s under 140
characters.
• Retweeting is a collaborative effort.
13. Facebook Brand Pages
• Facebook: house party – Only your inner circle gets an invitation*
• That’s true for PERSONAL Facebook pages, but BRAND pages are
different
14. Facebook Brand Pages
• Facebook: house party – Only your inner circle gets an invitation*
• That’s true for PERSONAL Facebook pages, but BRAND pages are
different
• Brand pages can promote the organization in ways the official
website cannot
1. update content on the fly
2. directly engage with members
3. encourage sharing
15. Facebook Brand Pages
• Brand pages, or “fan” pages, are open to everyone which is more
favorable than a “group” page that’s by invitation only
• Brand pages offer better statistical data and a better range of status
updates
16. Facebook Brand Pages
• Create a vanity URL for ease of use
(example: http://www.facebook.com/pepsi)
• Our current URL:
http://www.facebook.com/pages/Women-in-Film-and-Video-
DC/226659960441
17. Facebook Brand Pages
• CONTROL YOUR PAGE!
• Admins and fans can post on a brand page, but LIMIT fan postings
1. wall comments
2. links
3. photos
4. videos
• Spammers on brand pages can be reported, deleted and banned
from making future posts
19. Facebook Brand Pages
• Use a landing page that every Facebook user will see when they go
to your site
• Landing pages can promote a special event, product or give users
more information about your organization
20.
21. Facebook Brand Pages
• Additional tips:
1. engage in 2-way conversations & customer service
(if someone posts a question, respond)
2. ask a question when you post something to encourage
discussion and sharing
3. create photo albums of events
4. upload videos
5. post content at similar times during the day
22. LinkedIn
• What is LinkedIn?
• Business tool
• Place to get industry-related questions answered
• Information directory
• Online resume
• Networking site
• Referral/testimonial generator
• Online reputation manager
23. LinkedIn

26.
27. HootSuite
• HootSuite is a social media dashboard used for online brand
management
• Post status updates, tweets, photos and links
• Publish (or, cross-publish) content to
Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Foursquare, WordPress, MySpace, Tu
mblr and more
• Schedule posts for the future
• Communicate with fans/followers directly from HootSuite without
logging in to separate social media accounts
