The Superintendent’s Bulletin is posted weekly on Fridays on our website. It provides timely, relevant
information about meetings, professional development opportunities, curriculum and program development,
grant awards, and school committee news. The bulletin is also the official vehicle for job postings. Please
read the bulletin regularly and use it to inform colleagues of meetings and other school news.

Dear Colleagues,
As many of you know, fencing now surrounds what was the high school parking lot and a covered
pedestrian walkway has been erected between that area and the current building. This fenced area has
become quite a busy site. Through the fencing one can hear and watch how the former parking lot is being
transformed and prepped for placement of the construction trailers and for true excavation to begin for the
new Wellesley High School. While site preparation for construction is well underway, on Tuesday morning
Turner Construction paused its trucks, and workers cleared a path in the emerging rubble so that a brief
ceremonial ground breaking ceremony could occur.
Mindful that construction activity was paused to allow for the ceremony, the speeches were very brief
and the whole event ended within a half hour. Brief as it was, I thought it provided a meaningful snapshot
of how many people played a role into getting us to this moment: school administrators, School Committee,
School Building Committee, Permanent Building Committee, Board of Selectmen, Natural Resources,
Wetlands, Wellesley Historical Society, Police Department, Municipal Light Plant, our local legislators, and, of
course, the Massachusetts School Building Authority. Among the attendees on Tuesday morning were
many past and present incumbents from these several entities, spanning back to 2002. Retired Wellesley
High School Principal Rena Mirkin responded from Beijing to her invitation with the word, “Yippee!” While
some of the individuals present clearly spent much more time on the project’s development than others who
were there, the importance of the moment was really about acknowledging that we would not have a
project at all if everyone present hadn't done their part -- small or large. The planners of this simple event
deliberately decided not to recognize the contributions of specific individuals. This was magnanimous of
them, for they both played very significant roles in developing the project, but it was a fitting gesture to
acknowledge the collective effort of all. As construction proceeds I anticipate that the same spirit of
collective hard work will culminate, in a few short years, in a festive ribbon cutting at the entry of our new
building.

Wellesley Education Foundation Grants
Applications for the first round of grant funding are due Friday, October 9. Use only application forms from
the WEF website. Please send applications to Janice Gross in the Central Office. Applications received after
the due date will be reviewed in February.

Up to 20% of the grant budget may be allocated to individual elementary school grants providing they
   have potential for replication.

Application instructions, criteria for funding, and some examples of well written grants are all posted on the WEF
website, www.wellesleyeducationfoundation.org. Choose the Grants to Educators link. Be sure to include
shipping and handling expenses in your cost analysis. Please check with Lynn Moore-Benson when ordering
technology and science equipment, as she is aware of numerous vendors and options for the lowest cost
   equipment.

Questions about potential grant ideas or the application are welcome. Please send email or telephone the co-
chairs, whose names appear on WEF’s website.

Have you always wondered how WEF grants get funded?
Would you like to learn about the process first hand?

We are looking for volunteers to sit on the WEF Grant Review Committee this year. One representative is
needed from the High School, Middle School, and e ementary levels. Responsibilities: Read all grant
proposals, participate in four grant review meetings -- two in the fall and two in the spring -- discuss
grants, gather information and vote on grants. Fall meetings will be held November 2 and 9, 7:00 - 9:00 pm.
The spring meeting dates are to be determined.
If you would like to participate, please contact Becky_McFall@wellesley.k12.ma.us

  New Payroll Option
Effective with the October 5, 2009 pay check the Town of Wellesley will be able to provide your weekly direct
deposit pay stub to you via e-mail instead of by paper. By making this choice employees can help the town save
money and reduce the amount of paper that finds its way into the trash. If you choose this option, you will
receive your pay stub via e-mail on Friday when payroll is run instead of waiting to the following Tuesday for the
manual distribution. The e-mail will be password protected for confidentiality purposes. The pay date and actual
funds distribution date will not change and will remain on Tuesday. This program is voluntary so you can continue
to receive the paper copy if you prefer. If you did not receive the form in the mail and would like to select this new
option, please contact the Treasurer’s Office at Town Hall. (781.431.1019, Ext. 2266)

Superintendent's Bulletin 10-2-09

  • 1. Wellesley Public Schools 40 Kingsbury Street Superintendent’s Bulletin Wellesley, Massachusetts 02481 http://www.wellesley.k12.ma.us/district/bulletins.htm Bella T. Wong Bulletin #5 Superintendent of Schools October 2, 2009 The Superintendent’s Bulletin is posted weekly on Fridays on our website. It provides timely, relevant information about meetings, professional development opportunities, curriculum and program development, grant awards, and school committee news. The bulletin is also the official vehicle for job postings. Please read the bulletin regularly and use it to inform colleagues of meetings and other school news. Dear Colleagues, As many of you know, fencing now surrounds what was the high school parking lot and a covered pedestrian walkway has been erected between that area and the current building. This fenced area has become quite a busy site. Through the fencing one can hear and watch how the former parking lot is being transformed and prepped for placement of the construction trailers and for true excavation to begin for the new Wellesley High School. While site preparation for construction is well underway, on Tuesday morning Turner Construction paused its trucks, and workers cleared a path in the emerging rubble so that a brief ceremonial ground breaking ceremony could occur. Mindful that construction activity was paused to allow for the ceremony, the speeches were very brief and the whole event ended within a half hour. Brief as it was, I thought it provided a meaningful snapshot of how many people played a role into getting us to this moment: school administrators, School Committee, School Building Committee, Permanent Building Committee, Board of Selectmen, Natural Resources, Wetlands, Wellesley Historical Society, Police Department, Municipal Light Plant, our local legislators, and, of course, the Massachusetts School Building Authority. Among the attendees on Tuesday morning were many past and present incumbents from these several entities, spanning back to 2002. Retired Wellesley High School Principal Rena Mirkin responded from Beijing to her invitation with the word, “Yippee!” While some of the individuals present clearly spent much more time on the project’s development than others who were there, the importance of the moment was really about acknowledging that we would not have a project at all if everyone present hadn't done their part -- small or large. The planners of this simple event deliberately decided not to recognize the contributions of specific individuals. This was magnanimous of them, for they both played very significant roles in developing the project, but it was a fitting gesture to acknowledge the collective effort of all. As construction proceeds I anticipate that the same spirit of collective hard work will culminate, in a few short years, in a festive ribbon cutting at the entry of our new building. • 3. Wellesley Education Foundation Grants Applications for the first round of grant funding are due Friday, October 9. Use only application forms from the WEF website. Please send applications to Janice Gross in the Central Office. Applications received after the due date will be reviewed in February. Up to 20% of the grant budget may be allocated to individual elementary school grants providing they have potential for replication. Application instructions, criteria for funding, and some examples of well written grants are all posted on the WEF website, www.wellesleyeducationfoundation.org. Choose the Grants to Educators link. Be sure to include shipping and handling expenses in your cost analysis. Please check with Lynn Moore-Benson when ordering technology and science equipment, as she is aware of numerous vendors and options for the lowest cost equipment. Questions about potential grant ideas or the application are welcome. Please send email or telephone the co- chairs, whose names appear on WEF’s website. Have you always wondered how WEF grants get funded? Would you like to learn about the process first hand? We are looking for volunteers to sit on the WEF Grant Review Committee this year. One representative is needed from the High School, Middle School, and e ementary levels. Responsibilities: Read all grant proposals, participate in four grant review meetings -- two in the fall and two in the spring -- discuss grants, gather information and vote on grants. Fall meetings will be held November 2 and 9, 7:00 - 9:00 pm. The spring meeting dates are to be determined. If you would like to participate, please contact Becky_McFall@wellesley.k12.ma.us New Payroll Option Effective with the October 5, 2009 pay check the Town of Wellesley will be able to provide your weekly direct deposit pay stub to you via e-mail instead of by paper. By making this choice employees can help the town save money and reduce the amount of paper that finds its way into the trash. If you choose this option, you will receive your pay stub via e-mail on Friday when payroll is run instead of waiting to the following Tuesday for the manual distribution. The e-mail will be password protected for confidentiality purposes. The pay date and actual funds distribution date will not change and will remain on Tuesday. This program is voluntary so you can continue to receive the paper copy if you prefer. If you did not receive the form in the mail and would like to select this new option, please contact the Treasurer’s Office at Town Hall. (781.431.1019, Ext. 2266) ...3...
