1.
Dear Colleagues,
My father is a veteran of the Korean War, and as a result, he is a member of the Veterans of Foreign War and
the American Legion. But not until the Gulf War did he begin marching with his local chapter of the American
Legion in the annual Veterans Day Parade in Boston. Every year when I’ve asked if we could come watch him
march, he has declined. So Wednesday afternoon, when I barely remembered Dad might be marching on
Veterans Day, I left him a voicemail asking the same question I’ve asked year after year, expecting him to
return the call to tell me “no”.
This year, he surprised me by calling back to say “yes” and even offered to call my brothers as well and also,
“Why don’t we meet in Chinatown for dim sum, before?” Why the change of heart? Maybe it is because my
father turned 80 this year. Maybe it is because an old friend who was a veteran recently passed away and the
wake was on Tuesday. Whatever the reason, my mother, my brother and our children went to see my Dad
march in the Veterans Day Parade for the first time.
The parade itself is a modest event that starts at the base of the Boston Common and goes around the block,
up Boylston Street to the State House and back. The parade includes many groups representing different
branches of the military and different chapters within those branches. Groups with more senior members, such
as my father, have fewer representatives marching. The spectators are largely members of the families of the
veterans.
The oldest of my father’s grandchildren is 9. I know they don’t yet fully appreciate the symbolism behind
Veterans Day nor of the significance of those who live to participate in its celebration. But they will some day,
and I am so glad they have had at least one time, if not more, to come and watch their grandfather march
among veterans who represent many decades and backgrounds, unified in their past service.
I know the death of a former veteran and friend was fresh on the mind of my father and his colleagues who
marched that day. I know that the memories of past losses, whether due to combat or non-combat causes, are
also on their minds when they march. There were certainly protesters against war present during the march.
The fact that veterans of war exist is undoubtedly a valid point of departure for many discussions.
My Dad, along with many others, was drafted into active duty upon graduation from high school. For me, his
marching in a parade more than 50 years after serving is a celebration of life, his life and the lives of his co-
veterans. When I watched my Dad march with his friends, I was awash with the relief that he did come back to
become my father and my children’s grandfather, and to have the life he does. Many of those who work
among us have close ones now serving in different capacities in active military service. Needless to say, it is
an anxious time for them – a worry that stays in the back of one’s mind. This Bulletin is for them with an
expression of my hope that all goes well for them as it did for my father.
