Bella T. Wong Bulletin #15
Superintendent of Schools December 17, 2010
The Superintendent’s Bulletin is posted weekly on Fridays on our website. It provides timely, relevant
information about meetings, professional development opportunities, curriculum and program development,
grant awards, and School Committee news. The bulletin is also the official vehicle for job postings. Please
read the bulletin regularly and use it to inform colleagues of meetings and other school news.
Dear Colleagues,
In this year we are involved with many projects to support and encourage practices of sustainable
energy. Some of these projects are school-based and some are Town-wide initiatives. Many of the
initiatives strive to reduce unnecessary use of paper, one of which is to go to paperless payroll.
We have 1101 active employees, including substitutes and temporary staff, on the School
Department payroll. Seventy-nine percent of all school employees now use direct deposit instead of
receiving a hard copy check, however, only 51 percent of all school employees receive an e-note to
confirm direct deposit. This means 231 employees receive a hard copy check and an additional 308
employees receive a hard copy confirmation of the electronic payment to direct deposit. A total of
539 out of 1100 school employees are receiving some form of hard copy notification related to
payroll. A majority of employees are receiving payment 26 times a year.
If you haven’t already, I am writing to urge you to start 2011 anew by choosing to go to
paperless payroll by using direct deposit and e-note confirmation of payroll deposit! To do so,
please contact our school payroll accountant, Donna Kalinowski, dkalinowski@wellesleyma.gov and
she will help you sign up. As with all green initiatives, the more of us who choose to do this, the
bigger the impact we can make.
This will be the final bulletin for 2010. At the moment, I know everyone is working hard to finish the
last four days of December in good order. At the same time, we are dealing with extraordinary
unanticipated electronic challenges to our PowerSchool database. I imagine we will all be more than
ready for a break at the close of school next Thursday.
I wish you all a good rest until we see each other again in the new year.

Students are more likely to learn in schools that are safe and supportive. However, studies consistently show
that name-calling, bias, bullying, and harassment at school are on the rise. Safety is certainly an issue for
students who are seen as different because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. This course is
designed for people who are not gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender, but who are interested in addressing
bias around issues of sexual orientation and gender identity of young people.
