Tsunamis are sometimes caused by coastal flooding and earthquakes and can grow up to 55 feet tall, carrying water several miles inland at speeds of 0.14 to 0.28 km/sec. Tsunamis are very dangerous disasters that can cause death, destruction, and leave many people homeless as evidenced by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami that killed over 35,000 children and swept entire coastal villages away, leaving thousands dead. While some see tsunamis as just big waves, they are actually threats that destroy everything in their path.
