Introduction and Background
General Nursing Orientation (GNO) is a formal process to orient newly appointed nurses and nursing
education staff to the organization, nursing department, philosophy of nursing and resources available to support
nursing practices and professional development.
KFMC Preparation for Practice was recently designed to provide newly hired nurses the opportunity to become
exposed to the knowledge and practice the skills in a safe environment that they will be involved in at KFMC.
In the past years, the newly hired nurses were schedule for General Staff Orientation (GSO) for 2 days, General
Nursing Orientation (GNO) for 3 days and Generic Competency check off for 2 days as part of the orientation
process. Other training for new nurses were schedule and/or conducted by the Clinical Instructors in the unit.
In 2010, the GNO and KFMC Preparation for Practice Program was developed by the Director of Nursing- NED
in the person of Ms. Donna Hilliard. The program aims to provide the newly hired nurses with the needed skills,
knowledge and attitude to practice with confidence, competence, commitment and to improve the patient and
staff safety, in accordance to CBAHI and JCIA accreditation standards.

KFMC Preparation for Practice Work Groups
Purpose
The purpose of the Clinical Skills Workgroup is to design skills and simulation laboratory content and identify
facilitators for the workshops. The workshops will be designed and implemented as a partnership between clinical
areas and nursing education department.
Work Group / Membership
Each Hospital and Center will determine the specific work groups needed. There are commonalities among
Hospitals and Centers which should drive the organization of common work groups. Realistically, there may only
be one or very few new hires for a particular unit so when possible units should combine into one workshop. Each
workgroup must give themselves a “name” for future reference (e.g. Cardiovascular Clinical Skills Workshop Work
Group). The members of each work group should comprise clinical experts and NED staff. The members should
select a group leader at the first meeting.
The content of the workshops should address the skills and knowledge specific to the nurses practice area.
