2015For 26 years, WTCI has been the leading international business network in the
region delivering a wide range of events and services to our member companies.
Over the past twelve months, WTCI has continued to grow both in size and in the
scale of the educational programs and international business services we offer.
Building on the momentum of 2014, we continued to increase the ranks of our
member companies, while adding innovative new programs and enhancing our
core services and international events that have proven so valuable to the business
community.
Last spring, the U.S. Department of State chose WTCI to host a four-day conference
for 60 Fulbright Scholars from around the world. Participants at the conference
titled “Baltimore: A Tale of Two Cities,” met with leaders from some of Baltimore’s
leading healthcare organizations includingJhpiego, the Institute of HumanVirology,
conference sponsor Johns Hopkins University and many more.
This past fall, with the help of a generous grant from the Bowe-Stewart Foundation,
WTCI launched Baltimore’s Emerging and Developing Global Executives Program
(EDGE). This program identifies rising leaderswith internationalbusiness experience
and aspirations from the city’s top companies and provides these “Bowe Fellows”
the opportunity to advance their global business acumen. The 19 members of the
inaugural class have embarked upon a ten-month journey where they will learn
practical lessons from the leaders of global companies about what it takes to be
successful in international business. The goal of this program is to help enhance
Baltimore’s global business competency.
Looking to 2016, WTCI will continue to build on its strengths as we seek to build
upon the work we started this year. Next spring we will once again host a Fulbright
conference, and in the summer we will wrap up the inaugural cohort of the EDGE
Program and put together the second group of Bowe Fellows. With new initiatives
such as the WTCI Connect and new Professional Exchange opportunities on the
horizon, along with our core group of international events and business services,
the future for WTCI looks bright.
WORLD TRADE CENTER INSTITUTE
International Business Seminars has been using the Traveler’s Packages from WTCI for the
last few years, and they have been a huge benefit to our operations abroad. The research
included in the documents cover a wide variety of social and economic fields of interest,
giving us a solid overall view of the countries in which we operate. For a small organization
like ours, the amount of time the packages save us in researching and compiling is crucial
while upholding our dedication to academic quality.

FULBRIGHT PROGRAM
The Fulbright Program, the U.S. government’s flagship international exchange program, is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s
Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. The seminar in Maryland was administered by the Council for International Exchange of
Scholars (CIES), a division of the Institute of International Education (IIE) and hosted by the World Trade Center Institute in partnership
with Johns Hopkins University. The purpose of the Fulbright conference is to help scholars develop a mind-set to solve local and global
challenges.
FULBRIGHT 2015
Last Spring, 60 visiting Fulbright Scholars from across the world participated in a conference titled “A Tale of Two Cities: Focus on Public
Health” from March 25-28. WTCI helped Scholars enhance their understanding of the U.S. while showcasing Baltimore’s uniqueness and
diversity. Scholars met with representatives of the city’s world-class health institutions, such as Johns Hopkins University’s Bloomberg
School of Public Health, University of Maryland Medical Center and Jhpiego, and also gave back to our community through community
service at the Franciscan Center, Paul’s Place and A Can Can Make a Difference.
FULBRIGHT 2016
Building on the success of last year’s conference, WTCI was again selected to host a Fulbright Conference in the spring. The 2016
conference will investigating the role that human rights play in health outcomes in the city. Using the backdrop of the April 2015 unrest to
provide context, the reactions of individuals, non-profits, businesses, and government will be examined to see how the response to this
dark period in our city’s history can be the beginning of sustainable change here and in other cities.

EDGE PROGRAM
The mission of EDGE is to cultivate a group of emerging global executives in
Baltimore who will ultimately contribute to greater success and growth for
Baltimore area international businesses.
PeterBowe, President ofEllicott Dredges and Ellicott Dredge Enterprise, and Barbara Stewart, retired executive atJ.P. Morgan, approached
WTCI with the idea of creating a global business leadership program that sought to enhance Baltimore’s global competitiveness. As a
board member, Peter knew that WTCI’s strengths would make it a natural fit to bring this idea to life. After an initial discussion, WTCI
started to design the Emerging and Developing Global Executives (EDGE) Program. Over the next few months, WTCI organized a world-
class lineup of speakers, a group who among countless other accomplishments, have brokered billion dollar TV contracts, negotiated
with the Taliban, overseen the largest industrial bankruptcy in history, and are responsible for the supply chain of one of the world’s
fastest growing apparel brands. The EDGE Program has become the region’s premier learning opportunity for rising business leaders
who want to enhance their understanding of international business.
Each year, 15-20 candidates are selected to partake in a range of workshops and events, and meet with internationally-minded leaders
from various fields. These interactions and educational components will enhance the participants’ global perspective, build their
international network and ultimately help them have a greater impact in their region and profession.

PLANT A SEED | TOUCH A LIFE
This is a great opportunity for members of our community to
experience the world and get a global perspective without leaving
home. Every connection plants a seed, and those seeds grow
over time, both here and abroad. In a world with too much conflict
and misunderstanding, these connections and friendships serve
as inspiration to think beyond the local boundaries of everyday
life to embrace the role of becoming a global citizen.
PEP IN 2016 | GET INVOLVED
Looking forward, WTCI has many ways in which you can get
involved. Become a Cultural Ambassador and contribute to
citizen diplomacy and mutually beneficial exchanges! Become
a Homestay Hero for an international visitor or simply host the
group for dinner, each can be a truly gratifying experience. For
more information contact Mrs. Janine Branch at Janine@wtci.org
or call (410) 576-0022 ext. 108.

PROFESSIONAL
EXCHANGES
PROGRAM
For almost 20 years, WTCI’s Professional Exchanges Program
(PEP) has designed and implemented exchange programs for
foreign professionals from all over the world on behalf of the
U.S. Department of State. Each year, thousands of international
leaders, professionals, students, and scholars come to this
country, 600 of whom came to Maryland in 2015. These visits
range from half a day to up to three weeks, and the experience
is enhanced with the help and support of our community. Each
exchange participant comes to the United States to communities
large and small to learn from our country’s citizens who come
from different walks of life.
What an amazing group of women! Truly, I think that they were eager to share
experiences, hear our thoughts, and discuss how they can continue to grow their
businesses. I was impressed with their questions and the individual visions of these
women. And I can only hope that they found our conversation as impactful for them,
as the experience was for me. I’d be happy to participate in future opportunities!
