New mobility trends will have a profound impact not only in the way users move (or, we should say, how users access / consume mobility), but will transform how users interact with the different players in the mobility ecosystem – vehicles/automakers, service providers, insurance companies, …, and service stations. Implications are manifold: technical, business-related, legal. This presentation revolves around technical and business implications, discussing how the so-called Daimler's CASE paradigm - standing for vehicles becoming more and more Connected, Autonomous, allowing flexible use (Shared & Services) and having Electric drive systems - will have an impact on service stations, not to be considered merely “filling stations” anymore, but “mobility hubs” serving different mobility needs from conventional users - that is, drivers, or passengers -, and CAVs. Service stations will ultimately become a central node in an IoT-enabled mobility world, and the presentation will tackle how the digital tsunami enabling MaaS, blockchain and other cutting-edge technology developments will shape the future of this business.

Clean and sustainable cities are appealing places to live, to work, to enjoy life, and – not least – to invest in. I live right in the very center of Amsterdam and look out over the bustling square in front of Central Station. Every day, around the clock, trucks and delivery vans drive past my door to deliver shoes and put fresh fish on the table; they deliver packages from web stores, they arrive with construction materials, and they pick up lots and lots of garbage. It’s a wonderful sight if you enjoy transport as much as I do. My neighbors aren’t quite as excited about transport, however. They complain about the poor air quality, the lack of safety, and the inaccessibility of the neighborhood. Irritation is also growing among the local business owners themselves. Their customers are complaining... It’s really not much fun trying to enjoy a cold beer at an outdoor café with all those trucks and touring cars chugging by. Good city logistics is important for the economic vitality and the appeal of cities. It ensures that restaurants can serve their guests, that stores can offer the very latest product range and that buildings can be renovated without delays. Urbanization puts new demands on urban mobility. As customer demands evolve, city logistics is becoming more and more finely meshed and more often just-in-time. If no adjustments are made to current policy, city logistics will continue to grow. City logistics needs to become smarter, cleaner, quieter, and safer, with faster flows. The City Logistics research program will be conducting applied research on ways to improve city logistics. In this white paper I will start by giving an impression of the challenges in relation to city logistics in Amsterdam and other cities. I will then give an overview of the themes for future research. In developing a base of practical knowledge, we will be making use of an integrated approach on the basis of a city logistics concept and the Business Model Canvas. Finally, I will conclude by presenting the themes of this new research program.

An introduction into eLIPTIC, a 3 year, €5.9m Civitas project under the EU Horizon 2020 programme investigating the potential for using existing electrical infrastructure to support the charging of electric buses and other vehicles. e.g. Transport for London have investigated the potential for using the private London underground tube network as a way to support electric buses and taxis The project has three key pillars of investigation: 1. Safe integration of e-buses into existing electric public transport infrastructure and upgrading trolley bus networks with 'better buses' or trolley hybrids and automatic wiring/de-wiring technology; 2. Smart energy management upgrade of electric public transport systems; 3. Multi-purpose use of electric public transport infrastructure e.g. for safe recharging of non-public transport vehicles. A huge increase in urban logistics property space is required across key centres across Europe in the next few years to meet the exponential growth of eCommerce and the resultant need for last mile delivery in cities, according to a new research report from Cushman & Wakefield. The Urban Logistics report uses Cushman & Wakefield’s ‘Urban Space Model’ – developed in partnership with P3 Logistic Parks – to quantify total urban logistics space requirements in Europe’s top eCommerce markets based on current and future online sales volumes. This new property sub-sector, from which the report takes its name, has emerged to meet the rapid growth in parcel deliveries. The ‘Urban Space Model’ expects delivery volumes across Europe to increase by a further 69% by 2021, with variations by market impacting space required. Its methodology includes a number of inputs and assumptions based on actual urban logistics practices and current online transactional data.

In order to increase benefits of a UCC in city logistics, the delivery to the final customers from the UCC can be done using light electric freight vehicles. These LEFV provide numerous operational benefits due to their smaller size while being more sustainable than regular light commercial vans. LEFV's have several operational limitations as well, mainly concerning their range and loading capacity. In order to successfully combine a UCC with LEFV, smaller inner city microhubs have to be added to the supply chain to provide forward bases of operation for LEFV. Goods are consolidated at the UCC, after which they are shipped to a microhub near the delivery area. From here, the LEFV's carry out the final delivery to the customer. In this paper by Nick Heijdeman from the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (project LEVV-LOGIC), the case of a coffee and vending machine supplier in Amsterdam was used to analyse the effects of using microhubs and LEFV. This company already operates out of a UCC, in the research they added microhubs to the supply chain to see their effect. The results showed that using a microhub in the city, in conjunction with a UCC at the edge of the city, was financially more feasible scenario than just using a UCC and delivering directly from it using diesel vans. The case study concludes that in order to make a UCC financially feasible for urban deliveries, it needs to be used in conjunction with LEFV and microhubs.

‘De supply chain planner van de toekomst’, dat was de titel van de kennissessie die werd gegeven door supply chain expert Walther Ploos van Amstel en Michel Winter van Slimstock. Michel: “Ons verhaal ging over de cruciale rol die supply chain planners spelen bij het verwezenlijken van bedrijfsdoelstellingen en het neerzetten van een winstgevende operatie. Voorheen hoefde deze niet verder te kijken dan de vier muren van een magazijn en hadden ze primair als taak om vraag en aanbod op elkaar af stemmen.
