11. Nursing Philosophy
HEALTH:
Health to me means multiple things. It is the function of mental, physical, emotional, and
spiritual illness or wellness. It’s the support from not only from the medical staff, but from the
family/loved ones as well. It pertains to the ability to adapt and manage the illness. Throughout
my nursing career I will continue to not only provide care for my patients, but to equip them with
the knowledge required to manage each condition.
NURSING:
Nursing is providing safe practices, promoting healthy lifestyles, educating patients and
family members, and advocating for each individual patient. Nursing is a profession for any life
changing event; in good health or illness. Whether it is caring for a patient at birth or helping a
loved one cope with end of life care; nursing is a lifelong learning profession, with critical
thinking, and having compassion for those under your care.
PERSON:
Those who need nursing care are not only the ill patients. It is any healthy or unhealthy
person, whether it be physical, emotional, spiritual, or mental. It does stop with the patient, it
reaches out to the family and caregivers as well. Every person needs nursing care to either get
healthier and have more understanding; or to remain healthy. As a nurse I will care and educate
my patients, but their families as well. It is not just to cure the disease or manage the illness, it is
about the whole person and that extends out to the family and caregivers.
ENVIRONMENT:
Each individual’s environment is different. The environment does not just pertain to the
physical location. It is the psychosocial status, culture/beliefs, industry, and mental status. In
nursing we are exposed every day to not only a variety of illnesses, but to people as well. It is
important to keep each individual’s environment in mind while caring for them.
LIFELONG LEARNING:
Nurses need to stay current in the field because nursing changes all the time. We need to
stay up to date with all rules, regulations, laws, skills, procedures, communications techniques,
etc. Continued education does not only better my career, it will give me the ability to provide all
available skills and knowledge for my patients.
