On a long haul flight your sleep will be restless. Your muscles will ache. Your skin will become dry and you will feel gross as you’re leaving the plane. There is no amazing pill for this that will make your journey more enjoyable, so we have gathered our best tips for improving your long haul flight.
2. What’s this all about?
On a long haul flight your sleep will be restless. Your muscles
will ache. Your skin will become dry and you will feel gross as
you’re leaving the plane. There is no amazing pill for this that
will make your journey more enjoyable, so we have gathered
our best tips for improving your long haul flight:
3. Get comfortable
Starting from right at the beginning, you will need comfortable clothing,
right down to your shoes. Slip on shoes will get you through security a lot
faster and they are so easy to remove once you’ve boarded the plane.
Your feet will swell during the flight, so if you do plan on keeping your
shoes on, make sure they have some extra space within them so they do
not become too tight and uncomfortable. Top tip: Make sure you shower
before you leave so as not to offend other flyers!
Make sure that you are wearing a super comfortable outfit before you
board. If this requires you to get changed in the airport, then so be it!
Comfort is key during long haul flights. You are going to be restricted on
your movement, so when you are going to be in your seat, make sure
your clothing is comfortable and stretchy so you are not going to be
tugging at it all the time.
4. Food and drink
Top tip: stay hydrated! Plane cabins are dry, so make sure you drink
plenty of water to hydrate your body and skin. Instead of waiting for the
flight attendants to come by with the cart of treats, bring a water bottle
along with you so that you can have them fill it up or you can fill it up in
the bathroom.
Make sure to avoid eating any heavy foods during your flight. Bring along
with you any snacks so you are not as tempted to any sweet foods. Good
foods to pack would be: nuts (almonds), fruits (bananas, apples, dried
fruit), whole grain salads (leafy green salads will wilt), dark chocolates
(you do deserve a treat for enduring a long haul flight!).
Top tip: Order your meal way in advance to secure the meal that you
would like! We recommend ordering the vegetarian/vegan option. The
food is usually decent and it’s served before everyone else’s.
5. Entertainment
Entertainment is a matter of preference. Books, a Kindle, music, movies
or even work. Whatever works best for you?
Long haul flights are a great way to disconnect from the world. You will
be unavailable by phone and completely disconnected from the internet.
Top tip: Download movies to an iPad or sync Spotify playlists to your
phone for offline listening.
Regardless of you entertainment choice, bring a pen. You will need it for
customs forms and if inspiration strikes, you may need to jot down any
ideas or sketches.
6. Get some sleep
Top tip: Do not drink alcohol – it will only make your sleep
worse on a long haul flight! Chamomile tea can prove quite
helpful as well as an eye mask, neck pillow, and if you’re a
light sleeper, headphones. It may also be an idea to use the
pillow provided by the aeroplane as a back support. We also
recommend rapping chamomile tea bags in tissue and
placing them on your eyes under your eye mask. The skin
around your eyes is very sensitive and delicate and they need
to be kept significantly hydrated during your flight.
7. Toiletries
When stepping off a plane, whether it is a short flight or a long haul, you
will feel gross and exhausted.
Top tip: Within the last hour, grab all of your toiletries and go and refresh.
Washing your face and brushing your teeth is the easiest way to feel alive
again. Aside from your essentials such as toothbrush and travel sized
(maximum of 100ml) toothpaste, bring either face wipes or a face wash.
To help prevent your skin from drying out, bringing a moisturiser for your
face is something to consider.
