12. Back to his
Crystal Roots
P
hilippe Ferrandis is synonymous with
large, imposing jewellery pieces,
with intricate detailing and it is hard
to believe that this talented jewellery
designer is a self-taught one,
something he prides himself on, and which he
beautifully demonstrates in his own jewellery
line as well as the limited edition collection he
designed for Atelier Swarovski.
While he did not study the art of jewellery
making, he always designed jewellery. From a
young age he designed jewellery with anything
he could get his hands on, pearls, wood.
His father was an artist and so he grew up
surrounded by different materials, and he never
hesitated in using different forms, metal, wood,
to design. As a teenager he was attracted to
art, in particular feminine figures, fascinated
by women who had larger than life styles, like
Cleopatra. “In a museum I am more attracted
by a painting of a woman wearing jewellery
than a woman in the nude,” Ferrandis explains.
The designer recalls that “as a teen I
designed jewellery as a hobby, which I then
offered to my friends, I even designed pieces
using the art of paper mache when I was
young, which I would then sell as a way of
making extra money as a student.”
It was only when he embarked on a life as
a professional designer that he encountered
some difficulties when he was faced with the
reality that no-one wanted to hire him because
he didn’t study jewellery-making and so no-one
wanted to take a chance on him, so he started
working part-time in museums and art galleries.
“I had good ideas but I didn’t have the
technique of jewellery-making and then one
day I thought perhaps it was a good idea to
learn the professional techniques in jewellery-
making and did so in ateliers in the Marais, and
at home I would practice and design, and sell
my jewellery in Parisian boutiques.”
His perseverance paid off when his very first
collection was bought by Saks at which point
he decided that with every new collection
he would learn a new technique and new
finishings. “I believe you need to give people
their chance and give them the opportunity to
show what they can do. When we are creative
we do not necessarily need to study. For me
it was a given to design jewellery, I think it
is because I am curious, I like to observe, to
watch,” the designer declares. Today, Philippe
Ferrandis designs two collections per year for
his eponymous jewellery brand and within
each collection there are 12 stories with a
plethora of pieces that recount the “story”.
“I admire and support people who go from
one trade to another, architects who design
jewellery or vice versa because I think they
bring new life to the trade, take for example
Victoire de Castellane or Lorenz Bäumer, they
came from costume jewellery and they may
have a ‘crazy’ approach to jewellery but they
have been quite successful,” he says.
In 1992 he started collaborating with
Swarovski when Atelier Daniel Swarovski was
the house’s signature brand, launching the
house’s iconic Nirvana ring. And now the
talented designer has worked on a limited
edition collection for Atelier Swarovski, coming
full circle and bringing his signature style to the
house that holds a dear place for him.
“I worked for 12 years for Atelier Daniel
Swarovski, until it closed down. It was an
extraordinary experience, as we were not
locked into market research and numbers, it
was more about creativity. The atelier was more
of a window to showcase what the rest of the
company was able to do, to show other crystal-
makers what could be created using crystal,”
he recalls.
“Working for Swarovski was a work full of
research, primarily in colour, our objective was
to work with new colours, there were no limits
placed when it came to creativity. We used crystal
mesh, which wasn’t used very often at the time,

but we at the atelier used it a lot and made so
many things with it including clutch bags and
evening bags.”
A decade later he was contacted by Nadja
Swarovski to work on a capsule collection, an offer
he could not refuse, explaining, “I was interested
in working again with the house, keeping my style
and letting it come through in the designs while
bringing through the Swarovski style as well. It
was very easy to work with the house again and
what was great was that I barely had to rework
any of my designs, they approved my original
pieces, which was great, I just had to edit back the
pieces in the collection because I tend to design a
lot of pieces.”
The result sees his first Atelier Swarovski
collection inspired by Manhattan, reflecting
New York City’s skyline with graphic lines
and dazzling crystal recreating the glistening
skyscrapers that mark the city’s place on the
island. The capsule collection is comprised of
two necklaces, a pendant necklace, earrings,
rings, a cuff bracelet and a bracelet, with all
pieces using coloured crystals to bring the
jewellery to life. The art deco designs are at
once in line with Philippe Ferrandis’s style but
are also perfectly complementary to Atelier
Swarovski, highlighting the designer’s gift of
versatility and creativity.
Awarded the Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant,
an honour presented to French companies
in recognition of their artisanal savoir-faire,
Philippe Ferrandis’s jewellery is all handcrafted
in his atelier in Paris’s artistic Viaduc des Arts.
His autumn/winter 2015/2016 collection is
handmade and does not stray far from his
signature style of big and bold, with imposing
pieces that make dramatic statements
regardless of the occasion. While his Atelier
Swarovski collection is an ode to Manhattan,
his eponymous brand’s latest collection pays
homage to Paris. La Vie Parisienne (Parisian
Life) collection brings to life certain moments
in the French capital, from a night in Versailles
to an opening night in a museum, with every
moment capturing an unforgettable souvenir.
The idea as the designer explains, is “a Parisian
strolling through the city at different times of
the day.” Chandelier earrings complete with
teardrop crystals mark a night in Versailles
(Une Nuit à Versailles) while pearls and sharp
lines take you to Centre Georges Pompidou
(Vernissage à Beaubourg).
The designer who has previously
collaborated with fashion houses Nina Ricci,
Givenchy and Balmain explains that for him
“ jewellery is used to punctuate someone’s
personality and not to show someone’s
monetary worth, which I find quite vulgar. For
a time jewellery was and, unfortunately, is still
used as a way to demonstrate someone’s social
standing, to show someone’s riches. To me
jewellery is linked to femininity, it is extremely
important to one’s look. I think jewellery is an
accessory and allows a woman to be creative in
a moment or another, something that isn’t very
adopted in France.”
He admits that his biggest buyers are mainly
Europeans and Japanese and he designs pieces
that are “strong in personality, I like to design
for women who are full of character, who dare,
who look for something new and different.”
The Atelier Swarovski by Philippe Ferrandis collection
is available at selected Swarovski boutiques.

Every woman is different and for every woman a
different bag is in order. Le Facette leather good
specialists are all about offering every lady the chance
to recreate their eponymous tote bag. Red, black, cream,
leather, python print, suede, the choices are endless and
only you can say what can and what cannot go together
to make your bespoke Le Facette bag. Every bag is made
with two faces, which don’t necessarily have to be the
same colour and of the same leather, it’s your choice. The
two faces are then attached to create a bag by zipping
them together with or without extra leather straps,
making the bag as wide or thin as you like. And because
of the genius of the zip detail that puts the whole bag
together, the added bonus of Le Facette’s bag is that
you can change one side or both and you can update
the middle straps whenever you feel like you need to
whether it’s to match a new look or a new mood.

41. If you are looking for a wide selection of exquisite timepieces
and FINe jewellery, you only need to keep one name in mind.
For more than 135 years, the name “WEMPE” has stood for the utmost expertise in the art of making
jewellery and timepieces. We offer a unique selection of valuable treasures at 28 Wempe showrooms world-
wide. We are especially proud because for more than a century we have been privileged to contribute to
the grand feelings that our customers express when they purchase jewellery or timepieces. Our pieces
of jewellery uphold international standards and are born in our own atelier. This is true for unusual one-
of-a-kind items as well as for our diverse assortment of classic pieces with brilliant-cut diamonds. And
a century-old friendship links us with the world’s foremost watch manufactories. You will find WEMPE
showrooms at the loveliest locations in great European metropolises, New York City and in Beijing. Each
shop also offers service or advice whenever you require it, so you can be certain that we will always be
available to meet your individual needs. We cordially invite you to discover an abundance of interesting
new items and exclusive special models at one of Europe’s leading jewellers. We look forward to your visit!
