What is Open to Ideas?
Being Open to Ideas means:
 You have a willingness to listen
to other ideas and opinions
 You admit the possibility that
you are wrong or may change
your own perspective
 You have a willingness to learn
and try new things
 You consider alternative
approaches to problem-solving
 You more adaptable to any
work environment and job
What is Open to Ideas?
Being Open to
Ideas means:
 To challenge
 To explore
 To reinvent
 To discover
 To create
 To grow
The mind that
opens to a new
idea never returns
to its original size
~Albert Einstein
“In AirAsia we consider ourselves
basically a dream factory…We
deliberately decided that we wanted a
company where people can pursue
their passion and we wanted to make
use of all the talent that we have in-
house. The culture that we have
stems from the fact that we want
openness and we want people to
be creative and passionate about
what they do. In order to do that,
we’ve got to inspire them.”
Tony Fernandes
CEO and Founder
AirAsia
 We live in a world of
possibilities
 A world where
innovation,
exploration and
discovery are never-
ending
 We are driven by the
belief that there is
always a better way
World of Possibilities
You must feed your
mind with reading
material, thoughts
and ideas that open
you to new
possibilities
~Oprah Winfrey
 In order to retain existing
customers and attract
new customers an
organization needs to
think of new and
different ideas to keep it
at the top
Why Organizations need to be Open to Ideas
 The moment an organization stops keeping up
with the latest trends and start moving backward
rather than forward, then the organization is in
deep trouble and may eventually shut down
“If you have an apple and I have an apple and we
exchange these apples, then you and I will still have one
apple. But if you have an idea and I have an idea and
we exchange these ideas, then each of us will have
TWO IDEAS”
~ George Bernard Shaw
5 Tips to generate Ideas
 Often ideas are unexpected
moments of inspiration
 The big challenge is freeing
yourself from the conventional,
mundane thoughts that occupy
most of your brain time
 You need to give your brain the
time and space to work for you
Try each of the following
5 Tips to come up with a great idea or two
5 Tips to generate Ideas
• Great ideas won't come in a vacuum
• You need some way to get your brain to think in new and
creative ways
• Get out somewhere to stimulate your brain into thinking
differently
• A simple walk on a crowded street or in a shopping mall can
lead you to an exciting activity that makes me think anew
Get Out and Observe1

friends and colleagues can get
you in a thinking rut

thought patterns and old
stories
 The refreshing perspectives

and expand your way of thinking

1. How do you put a giraffe into a fridge?
2. How do you put an elephant into a fridge?
3. The King of the Jungle is holding a meeting
for all of the animals. One of them is not
there. Which one?
4. You are standing on the bank of an alligator

 There was a father who left 17 houses of equal value for his 3
sons
 When the father passed away, his sons opened up the Will
 The father’s Will stated that the eldest son should get 1/2 (half)
of total houses, the middle son should be given 1/3rd (one-third)
and the youngest son should be given 1/9th (one-ninth) of the
total houses
 As it was not possible to divide 17 into half, or 17 by 3, or 17 by
9, the three sons started to fight with each other
How do you solve the problem so that
the father’s will can be fulfilled?

impact on their team and the organization by:
1
Fostering
Creativity
2

of empowerment
and accountability
within the team

confidence in

Thinking Outside the Box
Thinking outside
the box means
that you step out of
the box, leave all
your experiences,
mindsets and
attitudes behind
You start to view things
from a completely different
perspective – outside the
box; unfiltered, unbiased,
open to suggestions,
willing to empathize with
others’ opinions
Also ready to swim against
the tide and to think what
no one else has ever
thought of
How to Think Outside the Box
Keep up
with
changing
times
Learn to take it
easy and let the
idea come to you
rather than trying
to squeeze it out
of your mind
Read some
good books
to help you
Mix with people
who are smarter
than you
Don’t just
mug up
theoretical
knowledge.
Think how
to apply
Watch some
inspirational
videos
Seek
inspiration from
people at the
top of the field
Do not bite off
more than you
can chew
Think Outside the Box
Idea Generation - Rules
