Why is PDHPE important?


PDHPE aims to ‘develop each student the
knowledge and understanding, skills and
values and attitudes needed to lead
healthy, active and fulfilling lives … which will
form the basis for students to adopt a
responsible and productive role in society.’

The three main objectives:
 Values

and Attitudes

 Skills
 Knowledge

These will provide students with the essential
skills of moving, problemsolving, communicating, interacting and
decision-making.
PDHPE is an important key
learning area as it:
 Encourages

an understanding and
valuing of self and others
It provides the opportunity for students to
develop positive attitudes about
themselves and others. It enables students
to communicate and work effectively and
allows the development and maintenance
of positive relationships.
PDHPE is an important key
learning area as it:
 Promotes

physical activity
Did you know people should be
accumulating at least 30 minutes of
moderate physical activity per day? And
children should accumulate of at least 20
minutes of vigorous activity at least 3 times
per week! Regular physical activity is
essential for the development and
maintenance of optimum health.
PDHPE is an important key
learning area as it:
 Emphasises

informed decision making
leading to effective and responsible
action
PDHPE builds upon the essential decisionmaking skills and allows opportunities for the
teaching and learning of these skills through
behavioural rehearsal.
Overall PDHPE is concerned
with:









physical, social, cognitive and emotional growth and
development patterns
the development and maintenance of positive
interpersonal relationships
the factors influencing personal health choices
living and learning in a safe secure environment
the adoption of an active lifestyle
fundamental movement patterns and coordinated actions
of the body
skills that enable action for better health and movement
outcomes
