In this power point presentation you'll know about basic of pedigree method and its procedure. I've given my best for making this ppt easily understandable.
2. Introduction
Pedigree is the record of ancestors.
Mass & pure line methods are applied to
genetically variable & homozygous
populations, but they cannot be applied to
segregating generations.
Methods generally used for handling of
segregating generations are,
1. Pedigree
2. Bulk
3. Backcross
3. Pedigree
Method
• Pedigree method is the most commonly used method for
selection from segregating generations of crosses of self-
pollinated crops.
• Pedigree method is also useful for selection of new
superior recombinant -types, including transgressive
segregants.
5. A. 1st year :- Cross is made between the parents possessing desirable characters.
B. 2nd year :- Sow the F1 seed giving wide spacing so that each F1 plant produces more
seeds. Harvest the seeds in bulk.
C. 3rd year :- Grow 2000-10,000 plants of F2 giving wide sparing for full expression of
the characters in F2 generation plants. About 100-500 superior plants are selected.
The value of select depend on the skill of the breeder. The selected plants are
harvested separately & given serial numbers and description entered in pedigree
registers.
6. D. 4th year - Progeny rows of F3 i.e. seeds of one selection plant in one row are
space planted from superior progeny rows, individual plants with desirable
characters are selected. Diseased lodging & undesirable progenies are discarded.
E. 5th year – F4 plants raised again. Desirable plants are selected from desirable
rows and harvested separately.
F. 6th year: F5 plants raised in 3 row plots i.e. seeds of each selected plant sown in 3
rows.
