This was a presentation I had given at the GILT Akademi'17 on 6th of April 2017. Deciding which accelerator to attend can be complicated for the entrepreneur and their teams. Ultimately the choice comes down to which accelerator is the “best overall fit” for the startup, the entrepreneur and for the accelerator itself.

Think of an incubator just as the name suggests – a place to incubate your idea, develop your business plan, and prep your startup for growth. Incubators typically work with young startups for an indefinite period of time, and startups work alongside each other in a shared, collaborative environment.
Startup accelerators support early-stage, growth-driven companies through education, mentorship, and financing in a fixed-period, cohort-based setting. While they are often grouped with other early stage support and investing organizations, such as incubators, angel investors, seed-stage venture capitalists, and even co-working spaces, these are all distinct things.
There are over 7,500 business incubators around the world
Y Combinator is an American seed accelerator, started in March 2005. Fast Company has called YC "the world's most powerful start-up incubator".[1] Fortune has called Y Combinator "a spawning ground for emerging tech giants".
Y Combinator was founded in March 2005 by Paul Graham and Jessica Livingston as well as Robert Morris and Trevor Blackwell, with whom Paul had previously co-founded Viaweb.
YC Deal - We have a standard deal - we'll invest $120k in return for 7% of the company's equity. While we may deviate from this in exceptional cases, it will still be the case for almost all of the companies we fund.
When you eliminate all the other factors, things get much simpler. You're expected to grow at least 7% every week while you're at Y Combinator. Ideally we're talking about revenue here, but if you're pre-revenue then user growth or some sort of engagement metric is fine (ideally as far down the lean marketing funnel as you can get).

What’s in it for the Start-up Acclerators?
These companies are, after all, giving up 6 to 10 percent of their equity in exchange for three months of services and some cash. The services include a range of things, like office space, discounts on servers and cloud storage, access to mentors, access to PR, access to press, access to investors, access to lawyers, access to recruiters. The thing I've heard repeatedly from founders who chose not to join accelerators after being accepted is that they thought the program was over-promising.
It's that old saying "the harder I work the luckier I get." Those who tend to outperform when they graduate from incubators likely would have made it without them.
