2. Warner Bro is a subsidiary of Time Warner and one of the major film
studio as it is known to be a global leader in production, distribution and
marketing that is headquartered in New York and California. Warner
Bros. produced and distributed a range of different genres which appeal
and draw a various types of audience and it help them become a global
leader in production and distribution. Popular franchises from Warner
Bros are Harry Potter (Producer & Distributor),Looney Tunes
(Producer & Distributor), Free Willy (Producer & Distributor), Ocean's
Eleven (Distributor), The Matrix (Distributor), Lethal Weapon
(Distributor).
I began to look at the thriller films that Warner Bros distributed to see
whenever they were successful or not in my interest to ensure that I get a
reliable institution behind my film to show the target audience that is it
worthy.
I’ve noticed that there are a number of thriller films that has been
successful and gain good reviews with this institution such as V for
Vendetta (2005), Unknown(2011), The departed(2006), Inception
(2010), Splice (2010), Taking Lives (2004) and I would consider Warner to
produce my film because the institution has created many well known
films which turned into franchises.
3. Universal Pictures (A.K.A Universal studios) is one of the 6 major studio
and it is the oldest American studio the still in continuous production,
which was found in 1912 by Carl Laemmle. The institution is a subsidiary
of NBCUniversal and a division of Comcast and General Electric distribute
and produce both mainstream and niche films.
I’ve learnt that Universal doesn't tend to produce thriller films but have
produced and distributed some noticeable films such as, Child’s Play
(1988), Dracula (1931), The Strangers(2008), Drag Me To Hell(2010).
Also, I become aware that the institution prefer not to go out of their
comfort zone and create or distribute a wide range of genres, and the
genres that Universal are based around with is drama, romance,
adventure and action.
Therefore I wouldn't chose Universal Pictures to produce my film but
may let it distribute my film, because they don't have a high profile of
creating successful thriller films therefore it wouldn't be promising for
me to use Universal to produce my film as it won’t fit into my audience
criteria due to the fact that Universal is known for producing drama,
romance, adventure and action films e.g. King Kong, Brokeback
Mountain, A beautiful Mind, Ray, Lost in Translation.
4. This film institution is both a production and distribution company
ranked as one of the top-grossing film studios. It was found in 1912 and
own by a media conglomerate Viacom, which is America’s oldest existing
film studio and also the last major studio to be headquartered in LA, the
Hollywood district. Paramount Pictures have produced well-known and
admired franchises through the 1980s to this date such as, The
Godfather (distributor), Star Trek ((distributor and producer), Friday
the 13th (distributor and producer), Mission Impossible (distributor
and producer)
After looking the variety of the films what this institution has produced I
feel that is very established and a all-rounder when it comes to
distributing different genre films, therefore I would feel comfort allowing
Paramount Pictures to produce and distribute my film because they had
numerous of pervious successful and breakthrough films which made
them very recognised and have a strong position in the film industry, also
it is a subsidiary of a media conglomerate which means that it would be
able to market, produce and distribute my film, making the company
very useful and efficient.
5. Another six of the major American studio, a subsidiary of a media
conglomerate, News Corporation own by Rupert Murdoch. It was found
in 1935 and it has become a recognised film institution due to it success
films that they have produced which the family and comedy genres film
seems to the most profitable e.g. Avatar (2010), Star Wars (1977-2008),
The Chronicles of Narnia (2005), Alvin and the Chipmunks (2007),
Doctor Do-Little (1998).
However they have produce and distribute thriller films such as, High
Crimes (2002) What Lies Beneath (2000), From Hell (2001), Phone Booth
(2003), Solaris (2002) which have been fairly successful and some have
grossed above its own budget e.g. What Lies Beneath – Gross Revenue:
$291,420,531 Budget: $100,000,000, Solaris - Gross Revenue:
$30,000,000 Budget: 47,000,000, Phone Booth – Gross Revenue:
97,000,000 Budget: $10,000,000.
I came to a conclusion that I would use 2oth Century Fox to distribute
my film instead of producing my film because the institution owned by
one of the biggest media conglomerate, News Corps. therefore it would
be able to distribute my film effectively and get the word out more
efficiently to my target audience .
