UTTARAKHAND

1) CLIMATE:
UTTARAKHAND: The climate of Uttarakhand is
temperate, marked by seasonal variations in
temperature but also affected by tropical monsoons.
Karnataka: Karnataka has tropical monsoon climate.
The main characteristics of this climate are hot and
moist summers and cool and dry winters. But there is
diversity in the climate of the state.

 KARNATAKA: 68.9 million

3) Festivals
 Festivals of both states (most celebrated 2019)
 Uttarakhand:
 Kumbh Mela: Kumbh Mela is one of the biggest and the most
popular festival of Uttarakhand. Although technically it is a
Mela or fair, it is a significant occasion for people of this
northern state.

 Karnataka:
 Hamphi Festival: The Hampi Festival, celebrated in November,
is one of the most important festivals in Karnataka celebrated
on a grand level. This cultural extravaganza is organised in
Hampi which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site popular for its
ancient temples.

 Flora:
 Uttarakhand
 The herbaceous vegetation is represented by a
number of species of Primula, Aster,
Saxifrage, Achaean, Delphinium, Polygonal,
Corydalis, Pleurospermum, Meconopsis,
Pedicularis, Saussurea, Rheum, Silene, etc.
The Bugyals of this zone are well known for a
rich and diversified flora.

 Common species of flora include Lagerstromia
lanceolata, Adina cordifolia and Careya
arborea.

 Fauna:
 Uttarakhand
 The state is home to about 102 species of
mammals, 623 types of avifauna, 124 varieties
of fish, 19 types of amphibians and 69
categories of reptiles. Some of the highly
endangered faunae you can find in Uttarakhand
are Asian elephant, snow leopard, tiger, musk deer,
Himalayan monal, king cobra, bharal, etc.
 State Animal: Alpine musk deer
 State Bird: Himalayan monal
5) FLORA
AND FAUNA
 Fauna:
 Karnataka
 Mammals include tiger, leopard, elephant, gaur,
slender loris and pangolin. Among the bird
species found here are ruby-throated bulbul,
shama, Malabar whistling thrush and paradise
flycatcher.
 State Animal: Elephant
 State Bird: Indian roller

SIMILARITIES
 Both the states have established relations through
sports, trade and culture. Uttarakhand had
inspired people in Karnataka in forest
conservation.
 AIR Correspondent
reports that the famous
Chipko Andolan or hug
the trees movement of
Uttarakhand had
inspired Appiko Andolan
in Uttara Kannada
district of Karnataka.
APPIKO MOVEMENT
 Appiko is the Kannada word for Chipko. It was Sunderlal Bahuguna, one of
the leaders of Chipko movement who visited the state in 1983 to inspire
villagers in Gubbigadde in Uttara Kannada on the non-violent struggle to
save trees.
 The experiences shared by Bahuguna inspired 146 men, women and
children to save Kalase forest. Before the axe men could put the first stroke
on the trees, a group of young men, women and children embraced the
trunk.
