Reusable ContainerPilot April 2013 Summary:
ThissemesterCampusDiningwiththe helpof several students leadbyZachFaderand Residential Life
staff has puttogethera pilotprograme2GO at the GreenScene café totest the feasibilityof reusable
containersforcampusretail unitsto reduce single use disposablesmaterials whichismajorcontributor
to campuseswaste stream. Much of the prior researchdone todevelopthe programwasdone basedon
course workdone by Faderfor a reusable cupcampaign“Jack Up Reduction”aswell ascommunicating
withotherSodexositeswhohave implementedreusablecontainerprograms.
Studentstabledthe pilotprogramatthe GreenScene fora week,educatingcustomersandstaff onthe
program,helpingindividualssignupandcreate an overall buzzandexcitementforthe program. Student
volunteershelpedputtogethercommunicationmaterialstoadvertise the pilotandexplainthe process
of the programonce participantssignedup.The teamsetthe goal to signup 100 participantsforthe
pilotina one weekperiod.Of the studentsparticipatinginthe launchanddevelopmentof the pilot
program Zach spentthe mosttime communicatingtoDiningstaff andtabling.Betweenmeetingswith
staff and tablingZachspentwell over10 hoursof volunteerhourstoensure the pilotlaunched
successfully.
The pilotperiodallowsbothstaff and customersrefineoperational use;refineadvertising andincentive
tactics of the program. The overall goalsare waste reductionandto change the social normsfor
individualstouse reusable items.Ideallynextfallalargercampaignwill be launchedincludingthe sale
of containersforbothdrinksand to-gomeals.Customerswillreceive a50 centdiscountforeach
containeruse,addingupto a potential dollaroff eachmeal.Reusablecupsforbothcoldand hot drinks
will be addedtothe program to bring more awarenesstothe presentreusable cupdiscountand
because muchof ourwaste stream currently are single use cups.
