INTRODUCTION

All the praise is for Allaah; may the prayers and peace of Allaah be upon
Muhammad, his family, his companions, and his followers. As to proceed:
These are beneficial statements comprising clarification of the mistakes of those who
pray, which they commit by way of innovating newly invented statements and
actions and doing some of the pillars and Sunan acts in other than their proper
places or in other than their correct manner. I urge my brother worshipper to avoid
them.

MISTAKES MADE IN QIYAAM

1. Negligence regarding the Matter of the Sutrah
That which is correct is what the Prophet0 said:

“Do not pray except towards a Sutrah.”1
Ibn Abdil-Barr said:
“It is befitting that the worshipper should draw near to his Sutrah and not be far
from it.”2
Imaam Maalik said:
“The (drawing of) the line is Baatil (Falsehood).”3

2. The Woman Uncovering her Feet in Salat
That which is correct is that which Imaam Ash-Shaafi’ee said: “It is upon the
woman to cover everything in Salat with the exception of her hands and her face.”
He also said: “All of the woman is ‘Awrah except her hands and face; and the top
of her feet is ‘Awrah.”4

3. Exaggerating in Spreading the Feet or Closing Them

Ibn
‘Umar,
may
Allaah be pleased
with him, narrated
that
the
Prophet0
would not spread his
feet far apart nor
would he have them
close to each other.5

4. Audibly Pronouncing the Intention

That which is correct is what Aboo ‘Abdullaah
Muhammad ibn Al-Qaasim Al-Maalikee said:
“The intention is from the actions of the heart.
So articulation of it is an innovation; along
with the fact that it contains disturbance of the
people.”6

5. Tucking the Garment and Rolling it up in Salat

The Prophet0 said:

“(And I was commanded) not to tuck the
hair or the garment (in prayer).” 7

6. Carelessness or Exaggeration in the Opening Takbeer

That which is correct is that he0 would raise them parallel to his shoulders,
and at times he would raise them parallel to his ears.8

7. Raising one’s Vision toward the Sky or Looking toward other than
the Place of Prostration

The Prophet0 said:

“The people who lift their eyes towards the
sky in Prayer should avoid it or lest it not be
returned to them.”9

8. Covering One’s Mouth in Salat
On the authority of Aboo Hurayrah,
may Allaah be pleased with him, who
said: “Allaah’s Messenger0
forbade…and that the man should
cover his mouth (in prayer).”10
That which is an exception is covering
one’s mouth in prayer if there is
legislative reason. A legislative reason
would be illness or some other reason.

MISTAKES IN RUKOO’

10. Carelessness in Rukoo or Exaggeration Therein

The Prophet0 said:

“The prayer of a man is not correct until he straightens his back in Rukoo’.”11
That which is correct is that when the Prophet0 would bow, he would spread
his back and make it even.12 The Prophet0 said:

“Then bow until you are at ease in your bowing.” 13

14. Raising one’s Nose from the Ground and Prostrating only upon the
Forehead
The Prophet 0 said:

“There is no prayer for he whose nose does not touch as much of the ground as his
forehead.”17
That which is correct is that the Prophet 0 would place his nose and forehead
upon the ground.18

15. Lifting one’s Feet from the Ground when Prostrating

MISTAKES IN SITTING

18. Not Sitting in the Manner which is Affirmed within the Prophetic
Ahadeeth
That which is correct is that which has come on the authority of ‘Aa’ishah, may
Allaah be pleased with her, who said: “He would spread his left foot and prop up
his right foot.”20

MISTAKES IN THE TASHAHHUD AND THE
TASLEEM

19. Moving the Finger in Manners which oppose the Prophetic
Ahadeeth

That which is correct is that when the
Prophet0 point with his (index)
finger, he would connect his thumb to
his middle finger. 21 At times, he would
form a circle with the two of them (i.e.
the middle finger and the thumb). 22

Reported by Aboo Daawud; and Al-Albaanee graded it Saheeh
P a g e | 15

20. Placing the Hands at the Top of the Leg
That which is correct is that they
should be placed upon the
knees. The Prophet 0
would spread his left palm upon
his left knee.23

21. Pointing when saying the Tasleem
On the authority of Jaabir ibn Samurah, who said: “When we used to pray with the
Messenger of Allaah0 we would say: ‘As-Salaamu Alaykum wa
Rahmatullaah; As-Salaamu Alaykum wa
Rahmatullaah,’ and point would the hand to
the two sides. So Allaah’s Messenger
0 said:

“What is the matter, that I see you raising
your hands as if they are the tails of wild
animals?”
So they left the raising of the hands and
sufficed with the Tasleem.”24 That which is
correct is to say the Tasleem to the right and
left without pointing.

SOME OTHER MISTAKES
 Intertwining the fingers. Allaah’s Messenger 0 said:

“When one of you performs Wudoo’ for prayer (and goes out), let him not
interlace his fingers.”25
 Adding the statement: “May Allaah establish it and perpetuate it,” to the
Iqaamah. Ibn Hajr and An-Nawawee both said: “It has no basis.”
 Preceding the Imaam or coinciding with his movements in prayer. The
Prophet 0 said:

“Does not he who raises his head before the Imaam fear that Allaah will
transform his head into the head of a donkey?!” 26
 A person yawning without trying to restrain it or placing his hand upon his
mouth.
 An abundance of movement in prayer
 Rotating the head with the Tasleem
 Disturbing those praying within the Masaajid with the sounds of cellular
phones

 Bringing small children, who have no self-control, to the Masjid. It is also a
mistake to deal with them in a repulsive manner
 Being extremely fast in making the statements and movements of the prayer

CONCLUSION
This is that which was easy for me to compile from the mistakes which the
worshippers make in their prayer and their departure from the guidance of the
Prophet 0 therein; which every Muslim cannot do without. The last of our
supplications is:

All the praise and thanks is for Allaah, the Lord of all that exists

  • 3. Page |2 INTRODUCTION All the praise is for Allaah; may the prayers and peace of Allaah be upon Muhammad, his family, his companions, and his followers. As to proceed: These are beneficial statements comprising clarification of the mistakes of those who pray, which they commit by way of innovating newly invented statements and actions and doing some of the pillars and Sunan acts in other than their proper places or in other than their correct manner. I urge my brother worshipper to avoid them.
  • 4. Page |3 MISTAKES MADE IN QIYAAM 1. Negligence regarding the Matter of the Sutrah That which is correct is what the Prophet0 said: “Do not pray except towards a Sutrah.”1 Ibn Abdil-Barr said: “It is befitting that the worshipper should draw near to his Sutrah and not be far from it.”2 Imaam Maalik said: “The (drawing of) the line is Baatil (Falsehood).”3 2. The Woman Uncovering her Feet in Salat That which is correct is that which Imaam Ash-Shaafi’ee said: “It is upon the woman to cover everything in Salat with the exception of her hands and her face.” He also said: “All of the woman is ‘Awrah except her hands and face; and the top of her feet is ‘Awrah.”4 Saheeh Muslim Al-Kaafee 1/45 3 Al-Mudawwanah 4 Kitaab Al-Umm 1 2
  • 5. Page |4 3. Exaggerating in Spreading the Feet or Closing Them Ibn ‘Umar, may Allaah be pleased with him, narrated that the Prophet0 would not spread his feet far apart nor would he have them close to each other.5 4. Audibly Pronouncing the Intention That which is correct is what Aboo ‘Abdullaah Muhammad ibn Al-Qaasim Al-Maalikee said: “The intention is from the actions of the heart. So articulation of it is an innovation; along with the fact that it contains disturbance of the people.”6 5 6 Fiqh Al-‘Ibaadaat pg. 148 Majmoo’ah Ar-Rasaa’il Al-Kubraa 1/254
  • 6. Page |5 5. Tucking the Garment and Rolling it up in Salat The Prophet0 said: “(And I was commanded) not to tuck the hair or the garment (in prayer).” 7 6. Carelessness or Exaggeration in the Opening Takbeer That which is correct is that he0 would raise them parallel to his shoulders, and at times he would raise them parallel to his ears.8 7 Sharh Saheeh Muslim
  • 7. Page |6 7. Raising one’s Vision toward the Sky or Looking toward other than the Place of Prostration The Prophet0 said: “The people who lift their eyes towards the sky in Prayer should avoid it or lest it not be returned to them.”9 8. Covering One’s Mouth in Salat On the authority of Aboo Hurayrah, may Allaah be pleased with him, who said: “Allaah’s Messenger0 forbade…and that the man should cover his mouth (in prayer).”10 That which is an exception is covering one’s mouth in prayer if there is legislative reason. A legislative reason would be illness or some other reason. Saheeh Al-Bukhaaree Saheeh Muslim 10 Reported by At-Tirmidhee; Al-Albaanee graded it Hasan 8 9
  • 8. Page |7 9. Placing the Right Hand upon the Left in the Prayer in Places which Oppose the Guidance of the Prophet 0 That which is correct is that one is to place the right hand upon the back on the left ….hand. Refer to: Description of the Salat with Illustrations.
  • 9. Page |8 MISTAKES IN RUKOO’ 10. Carelessness in Rukoo or Exaggeration Therein The Prophet0 said: “The prayer of a man is not correct until he straightens his back in Rukoo’.”11 That which is correct is that when the Prophet0 would bow, he would spread his back and make it even.12 The Prophet0 said: “Then bow until you are at ease in your bowing.” 13 Aboo Daawud Saheeh Al-Bukhaaree 13 Saheeh Al-Bukhaaree 11 12
  • 10. Page |9 11. When Bowing, Placing the Hands in Places which Oppose the Guidance of the Prophet0 That which is correct is that the Prophet0 said: “When you bow, place your palms upon your knees and spread your fingers.” 14 14 Ibn Khuzaymah reported it and Al-Albaanee graded it as Saheeh.
  • 11. P a g e | 10 MISTAKES IN SUJOOD 12. Exaggerating and Overextending in Sujood That which is correct is that the Prophet 0 said: “Be balanced in prostration.”15 13. Contracting the Body and Spreading One’s Arms like a Dog The Prophet 0 said: “Be balanced in prostration and let not one of you spread his arms like a dog.”16 15 16 Saheeh Al-Bukhaaree Saheeh Al-Bukhaaree
  • 12. P a g e | 11 14. Raising one’s Nose from the Ground and Prostrating only upon the Forehead The Prophet 0 said: “There is no prayer for he whose nose does not touch as much of the ground as his forehead.”17 That which is correct is that the Prophet 0 would place his nose and forehead upon the ground.18 15. Lifting one’s Feet from the Ground when Prostrating 17 18 Reported by Ad-Daaraqutnee; Al-Albaanee graded it Saheeh. Reported by At-Tirmidhee and Al-Albaanee graded is Hasan
  • 13. P a g e | 12 16. Placing the Right Foot upon the Left or Vice Versa 17. Not Firmly Placing the Bottom of one’s hand upon the Ground That which is correct is that the Prophet 0 would join the fingers together and point them in the direction of the Qiblah.19 19 Reported by Al-Bayhaqee; and Al-Albaanee graded it Saheeh
  • 14. P a g e | 13 MISTAKES IN SITTING 18. Not Sitting in the Manner which is Affirmed within the Prophetic Ahadeeth That which is correct is that which has come on the authority of ‘Aa’ishah, may Allaah be pleased with her, who said: “He would spread his left foot and prop up his right foot.”20 20 Reported by Muslim
  • 15. P a g e | 14 MISTAKES IN THE TASHAHHUD AND THE TASLEEM 19. Moving the Finger in Manners which oppose the Prophetic Ahadeeth That which is correct is that when the Prophet0 point with his (index) finger, he would connect his thumb to his middle finger. 21 At times, he would form a circle with the two of them (i.e. the middle finger and the thumb). 22 21 22 Reported by Muslim Reported by Aboo Daawud; and Al-Albaanee graded it Saheeh
  • 16. P a g e | 15 20. Placing the Hands at the Top of the Leg That which is correct is that they should be placed upon the knees. The Prophet 0 would spread his left palm upon his left knee.23 21. Pointing when saying the Tasleem On the authority of Jaabir ibn Samurah, who said: “When we used to pray with the Messenger of Allaah0 we would say: ‘As-Salaamu Alaykum wa Rahmatullaah; As-Salaamu Alaykum wa Rahmatullaah,’ and point would the hand to the two sides. So Allaah’s Messenger 0 said: “What is the matter, that I see you raising your hands as if they are the tails of wild animals?” So they left the raising of the hands and sufficed with the Tasleem.”24 That which is correct is to say the Tasleem to the right and left without pointing. 23 24 Reported by Muslim Reported by Ibn Khuzaymah
  • 17. P a g e | 16 SOME OTHER MISTAKES  Intertwining the fingers. Allaah’s Messenger 0 said: “When one of you performs Wudoo’ for prayer (and goes out), let him not interlace his fingers.”25  Adding the statement: “May Allaah establish it and perpetuate it,” to the Iqaamah. Ibn Hajr and An-Nawawee both said: “It has no basis.”  Preceding the Imaam or coinciding with his movements in prayer. The Prophet 0 said: “Does not he who raises his head before the Imaam fear that Allaah will transform his head into the head of a donkey?!” 26  A person yawning without trying to restrain it or placing his hand upon his mouth.  An abundance of movement in prayer  Rotating the head with the Tasleem  Disturbing those praying within the Masaajid with the sounds of cellular phones  Bringing small children, who have no self-control, to the Masjid. It is also a mistake to deal with them in a repulsive manner  Being extremely fast in making the statements and movements of the prayer 25 26 As-Silsilah As-Saheehah Saheeh Al-Bukhaaree
  • 18. P a g e | 17 CONCLUSION This is that which was easy for me to compile from the mistakes which the worshippers make in their prayer and their departure from the guidance of the Prophet 0 therein; which every Muslim cannot do without. The last of our supplications is: All the praise and thanks is for Allaah, the Lord of all that exists
