Coach Emilee Braunsroth and the Roosevelt Lady Riders volleyball team knew
what was walking into the RHS gym on Tuesday night.
Not only were the Resurrection Christian Cougars the number eight team in the
state, number one in 2A, and back-to-back state champions, they hadn’t lost a
match since November 2012. They’d won 70 consecutive matches.
“Here’s the thing about streaks: They’re meant to be broken. They don’t last
forever,” Braunsroth said.
In front of a livewire crowd, the Riders (7-6, 5-3 Tri-Valley) and their faithful fans
celebrated as the scoreboard showed 25-9 in the fourth set of the match to let
reality set in that the Riders had done it.
The Lady Riders ended the 70 match winning streak, 3-1.
“(I’m) very excited. We had a great game and we probably played better than we
have before,” said sophomore Jadyn Stumpf as friends and players congratulated
her. “We just had to go in confident, and we ended up winning this game.”
“We were able to beat their streak, so it’s very exciting,” senior Patty Lira said.
In set number one, it looked like the Cougars were on their way to win 71 after
miscues and butterflies got the best of the Riders, and netted the Cougars a 25-19
set win.
“Manage the manageable, take care of the easy ball,” said Braunsroth about her
message to her team heading into set two. “They are going to get big kills, they are a very athletic, very good team. Let the big kills go and manage the easy digs for us, and they
did. They did good job of that.”
The Riders and Cougars displayed marvelous kills, digs and tradeoffs in scoring streaks in the second set. Like she did in the first set, Stumpf was the spark for the team then and
throughout the match. Finishing with a team-high 18 kills, 11 digs and seven points, Stumpf’s energy mimicked that of her peers in the student section and fans in the bleachers.
“First of all we had to let go of any feeling of like being better than them. We knew it was going to be a hard-fought match no matter what. So, we just had to kinda come out and
play the game we know how to play,” said Stumpf about keeping their emotions under control throughout the night.
The Riders took set two 25-22, marking just the fourth time Resurrection had lost a set this season. The Riders would win set three 25-16 before the streak-snapping fourth set
victory and the match.
“At the beginning of the season a lot of people were like ‘Well, you guys are small and Res is like really big and they have really good hitters,’ but we all knew that if we believed in
ourselves than we’re alright and we can win this. It doesn’t matter what other people think, it’s all in our (hands),” Lira said, who finished with 11 kills and three blocks and digs.
Braunsroth said she was telling her players to not let their emotions get too high, stay calm and in control.
With leads in the final three sets, she said the Riders made it a side out game for the Cougars and they consistently managed the side-out offense of Resurrection and attacked
when the Riders had the ball throughout the game.
Braunsroth, who was calm as celebration played in the background, said this season the Riders have been stout on defense, which soared Tuesday night into history.
“We are not the biggest, most physical team, but we are good defensively. We are really good, and it can get fun,” she said.
For the coach, breaking the third longest match streak in state history is nice, but for her the win helps boost the Riders’ strength of schedule and seeding for the playoffs.
“This win is definitely going to give us a confidence boost and we’re ranked 16th right now (in playoff seeding) and that should boost us up into that top-12 so we can host
regionals,” Stumpf said.
Fans will be able to enjoy the win longer than the team. RHS faces conference rival Windsor on the road Thursday night. Braunsroth said Wednesday’s practice will be just like

For Stumpf and Lira, they said without a question this is the biggest win in their
time in the program. They said hearing their peers cheer them after each point
towards history came was what they fed off of throughout the night.
And when it was all said and done, Stumpf gave a simple, but fitting end to
wrap up a night she and her teammates will never forget.
“Go Roosevelt!” she said followed up with an excited laugh.
