2. John Newman’s song Love Me Again presents a linear narrative also with
performance, the narratives of the music video are a man and women
who fall in love quickly, the music video relates back to the story of
Romeo and Juliet, of how they fall in love quickly and end up dead, that’s
how the audience of the music video presume they end up as the music
video is left on a cliff-hanger when a truck runs into the couple. John
Newman was said to have written this song as a chance to win back his
girlfriend who he cheated on, he asked her to love him again which is
what the song title is based off.
The music video doesn’t use signs to tell the story, it’s the filming and
expressions on the characters faces that give you the story. Vladmir
Propp identifies with this music video as he talks about characters and
linking back to this falling into the Romeo and Juliet story you can clearly
see the different characters. The only part of the song that fits into the
music video is when Newman sings ‘now I'm rising from the ground’. And
the lady walks up the stairs.
The location is set up at a community centre, it seems like a casual place
and the guy shows up in casual clothes, but when the women shows up
she’s in a fancy dress with gloves on, this shows the class divide, this is
also reinforced when they are complete opposite sides of the room but
catch each others eyes.
The music video fits in with the genre of the music, the choreographic
dancing is fast paced, but the rest of the video is filmed in slow motion,
by it being in slow motion you really see the different emotions. One of
Barthes theories of the action code is used in this music video, when the
two characters both make eye contact and the audience want to know
what's happening.
3. The dimly lit lighting suggests secrecy, they are trying
to sneak away and not get caught. The idea on a
hidden romance emphasises the Romeo and Juliet
story, although the music doesn’t completely apply to
the lyrics and the chorus sings ‘love me again’, this
implies that they have been in love before.
When the two men from either partner appear you
can see the binary oppositions of the two classes, they
have nothing in common and like Claude Levi-Strauss
said its easy to establish something that isn’t there,
there is no connection between the two groups and it
creates a sense of divide.

4. Ending scene
The ending scene finishes on a huge cliff-
hanger, as the couple running down the
road they seem happy and have ran away
together. You hear the horn before you
see the truck and by doing this the
producer is using Bathes theory on the
action code, the audience can identify
that something is going to happen. The
ending scene is very daunting and I think
it can link back to the idea that
relationships have issues.
