4. What is Statement of the
Problem?
• The very first and foremost step in conducting
any research is establishing a statement of
research problem.
• The Problem Statement is the issue which the
researcher wants to solve or the question which
the researcher wants to answer.
• The problem statement outlines the problem and
tells the readers about the question the researcher
is going to answer in his research.
5. The Problem Statement
• It can be described in three ways:
• An Area of Concern
• A Niche in existing field of
Knowledge
• An already researched problem
because it needs further research or
understanding
6. Purpose of Writing a Statement of Problem
• The main purpose of this statement is to
transform a generalized problem into a
specific and well-defined statement
which can be worked on specifically to
reach a conclusion.
• Writing this statement helps identify the
purpose for which the research is being
conducted and written.
7. Statement as Introductory Part of Synopsis
• Oftentimes, this statement also serves as
the introductory part of your proposal or
synopsis which direct the attention of the
readers quickly to the issue which to are
proposing to address and solve in your
research. It provides the reader with
concise statement of the proposed project
itself.
8. Features of a Good Statement of
Problem
• It should be significant enough to contribute to the
existing field of knowledge
• It should address a niche in knowledge.
• It should be productive enough to lead to further
research
• The researcher should choose problem in area of his
research
• The approach towards solving the problem must be
ethical
9. Structure of
Statement of
Problem
• The first part describes the goal of the research.
• The second part describes how in the current
world those goals are unachieved or
undiscovered.
• The third part describes the way you are going
to achieve those goals
• The parts are informally known as the ideal, the
reality and the consequence, respectively.
