Hearing & Listening
❏ Listening is an action where
you chose to actively
concentrate on what you
hear.
❏ In listening your brain
processes the information
into knowledge
❏ Hearing is simply
the act of
perceiving sound
by the air.
❏ Hearing occurs
with or without
your consent.

Listening:
❏ To listen is to give attention to sound or
action.
❏ While listening, one is hearing what others
are saying, and trying to understand what it
means.
❏ Listening is key to all effective
communication.
❏ Without the ability to listen effectively,
messages are easily misunderstood.
1. Types of listening
There are four types of listening
➔ Discriminative listening
Identifying the difference between
various sounds
➔ Pretense listening
.Involves more hearing than listening
➔ Selective listening
Select desire part and ignore undesired
part
➔ Attentive listening
Concentrate,Respond

L = look interested-get interested
I = Involve yourself by responding
S = Stay on target
T = Test your understanding
E = Evaluate the message
N = Neutralize your feelings
Rules of listening:
★ Stop talking
★ Stop thinking
★ Remove distractions
★ Do not let your mind wander
★ Be patient
★ Emphasize with the speaker
Tip
Show how your solution
helps the person in
the story reach his or
her goals.
