YOUNG SAVANTS OVERVIEW

  1. 1. YOUNG SAVANTS Savant: A person of learning; especially: one with detailed knowledge in some special field (as in literature, mathematics, or basketball); wise through reflection and experience; characterized by prudence and good judgment

Our Mission <ul><li>To leverage the energy our youth spend on basketball and educate them to harness this energy and redirect it into crucial areas of their lives </li></ul><ul><li>To provide students with the life and academic skills necessary to succeed beyond basketball and athletics </li></ul><ul><li>To advance the wonderful cycle of giving </li></ul>
  3. 3. Who Do We Serve? <ul><li>A diverse group of boys & girls between the ages 6-18 </li></ul><ul><li>Under served inner city youth (90 % of our participants are from Greater Boston) </li></ul>
  4. 4. Why Young Savants? <ul><li>Less than 10% of all college grads come from economically disadvantaged households </li></ul><ul><li>Basketball provides an opportunity for students to build positive, healthy, constructive, meaningful and lifelong relationships both on and off the court </li></ul>
  5. 5. Our Program’s Focus <ul><li>Mandatory Study Halls </li></ul><ul><li>Dress for Success/Dress professionally </li></ul><ul><li>Annual College Campus Trip </li></ul><ul><li>Workshops, lead by trained professionals, on violence and substance abuse prevention </li></ul>

Our Staff <ul><li>Consists of people from ALL walks of life </li></ul><ul><li>Alumni, Volunteers, College Athletes </li></ul><ul><li>Professionals, Educators, Law Enforcement Agents </li></ul><ul><li>No staff member has ever received a stipend or salary </li></ul><ul><li>100% of donations are put towards funding and expanding our programs!! </li></ul>

Why Support Young Savants? <ul><li>We provide exposure to college campuses </li></ul><ul><li>We tackle childhood obesity </li></ul><ul><li>Mentoring, brotherhood, sisterhood </li></ul><ul><li>Students receive wellness training from experienced collegiate athletes, coaches, and trainers </li></ul><ul><li>Togetherness practiced during team meals, lunch, brunch, study halls, and dinner </li></ul>

Our Values <ul><li>The importance of education and higher learning will always be emphasized </li></ul><ul><li>Young Savants will speak intelligently, dress for success, and learn job readiness </li></ul><ul><li>Students will be taught that they are “Built for Others” </li></ul><ul><li>We will work closely with students to help each one learn how to fulfill their goals and ambitions </li></ul>

Our Goals <ul><li>To have all of our Young Savants earn at least a Bachelors degree (95% attend college now) </li></ul><ul><li>To develop a strong Alumni base that gives back to the program whether it be in the form of time, mentorship, coaching, or donations </li></ul><ul><li>To develop strong partnerships with local schools, businesses, and state agencies to help provide employment opportunities for our Young Savants boys and girls </li></ul>

We Will Request From Colleges… <ul><li>Scholarships for 10-15 students to attend their team camp </li></ul><ul><li>Historical tours of campus and city </li></ul><ul><li>Lists of constructive, fun things to do while on the trip from a school liaison </li></ul><ul><li>Access to local hotels and car rental establishments </li></ul><ul><li>Room and Board </li></ul><ul><li>Tours of locker rooms and coaching areas, team meetings with coach and his/her staff </li></ul><ul><li>T-Shirts and hats as souvenirs </li></ul><ul><li>Picture sessions </li></ul><ul><li>Someone in admissions to speak to the team about what makes a strong, compelling candidate for admissions </li></ul>

Earning The Right To Go On Trips <ul><li>A team GPA of 3.0 or higher </li></ul><ul><li>A community service team initiative project must be completed </li></ul><ul><li>No substance abuse </li></ul><ul><li>No legal entanglements </li></ul><ul><li>Demonstrate proper behavior in the classroom, at home, and at their place of employment </li></ul><ul><li>Participation in Team's Fundraiser: The Young Savants Free Throw Shoot-A-Thon </li></ul>

  17. 17. Billboard Campaign <ul><li>We have partnered with ClearChannel Outdoor to put up billboards around the state of Massachusetts in the Spring of 2009 </li></ul><ul><li>And so… we are offering billboard advertising to companies who would like to support our efforts </li></ul>
