HOW TO USE THIS COMPETENCY BASED LEARNING MATERIAL
Welcome!
The unit of competency PERFORM HAIRCUT is one of the competencies of
HAIRDRESSING NC II, a course which comprises the knowledge skills and
attitude in cutting the hair. It involves conduction initial consultation with the
client assessing their needs, actual cutting of the hair, check and apply
finishing touches and perform post hair cutting activities.
The module PERFORMING HAIRCUT contains training materials and
activities. This unit involves the skills, knowledge and attitudes required in
performing post hair activities.
In this module, you are required to go through a series of learning activities in
order to complete each learning outcome. In each learning outcome are
lnformation Sheets, Self – Checks, Task Sheets and Job Sheets. Follow
and perform the activities on your own. If you have questions, do not hesitate
to ask assistance from your facilitator.
Remember to:
Read Information Sheets and complete the Self – checks. Suggested references
are included to supplement the material provided in this module.
Perform the task sheets until you are confident that your output conforms to
the performance criteria checklist that follows the sheets.
Submit outputs of the Task Sheets and Job Sheets to your facilitator for
evaluation and recording in the Accomplishment Chart. Outputs shall serve as
your portfolio during the institutional competency evaluation. When you feel
confident that you have had sufficient practice, ask your trainer to evaluate
you. The results of your assessment will be recorded in your Progress Chart
and your Accomplishment Chart.
You must pass the Institutional Competency Evaluation for this competency
before moving to another competency. A Certificate of Achievement will be
awarded to you after passing the evaluation.You need to complete this module
before you can perform the module on PERFROM BLEACHING OF HAIR.

MODULE DESCRIPTOR :
This module covers the knowledge, skills and attitudes in performing
basic haircut for men. It involves conducting initiative consultation with client,
assessing the needs, actual cutting of the hair, checking and applying the
finishing touches and performing post haircutting activities.
NOMINAL DURATION : 50 Hrs
LEARNING OUTCOMES :
At the end of this module you MUST be able to:
 Prepare client;
 perform men’s haircut;
 perform blow drying techniques; and
 clean and sanitize workplace, tools and equipment.
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA :

1.1 Appropriate courtesy is extended to the client according to salon’s policy
and procedure.
1.2 Hair catalog is presented to the client for selection of hairstyle.
1.3 Hair is analyzed based on condition, texture, density and length.
1.4 hairstyle is agreed by both patron and hairdresser.
1.5 Protective clothing materials and gadgets are prepared according to
Occupational Health and safety Rules and Regulations (OHSRR).
1.6 Cutting needs are assessed in accordance with service requirements.

Definition of terms:
draping - wearing of protective clothing usually by a patron

Ways of Addressing the Client
 Greet the client politely, pleasantly and courteously.

Assessing client’s hair cutting needs
 Discuss with the client what he wants and expects
 Listen to what he tells you and understand what he requires you to do

 Examine your client’s hair to determine its type, texture, color, length the
factors that may affect the services requested.
 Tell your patron the limitations. Convince him to cut hair to a style you
are sure would suit him.
 Show hair catalogues to guide the patron’s decision.
After assessing your client’s haircutting needs, you may take the
initiative in guiding your client to a decision. Be sure that he understands,
accepts and agrees with you on the decided haircut style.
Examination of Hair and Scalp
 Note the texture pf the hair.
 If it is coarse and tightly curled, you need stronger combs to
stretch the hair out and firmer movements to be applied.
 Note the texture pf the hair.
 Fine hair requires a great deal of attention and expertise.
 Note the thinning crowns and decreasing density of hair.
 Take this into consideration when designing and cutting hairstyles
specifically for men.

DIFINITION OF TERMS:
Serrate - having a saw-toothed edge
Clubbing - a method of cutting hair sections bluntly, straight across
Layering- cutting sections of hair at varying angles from the head
Tapering - means reducing hair to a point where unwanted weight is
removed
Cutting Tools
Scissors. These are the most important tool in hair cutting
Choose the size of the scissors that best suit the size of your hand.
This will help to cut hair neatly, quickly and efficiently. The best way is to hold
the pair of scissors with the thumb through one handle and the third through
the other.

Razors. Modern counter parts pf scissors are called hair shapes. The modern
razor llike hair shapes has a replaceable blade and a protective handle.
With the opened handle. The back of the guarded blade is held by the
thumb between the pivot and the tang. The two middle fingers rest and
the tang, an either side of the handle.
Thinning scissors. May be held in the same way as cutting scissors
Clippers. Hand clippers are operated by pushing the handles together while
electric clippers are operated by a motor. The distance between the blade
points and the spacing of the teeth determines how closely the hair can be cut.

Combs. Suitable for cutting are thin and pliable comb, with both fine and
coarse teeth. Fine teeth allow the hair to be controlled and closely cut. Coarse
teeth allow for repeated combing and positioning of the hair.
Mirrors. These are useful while cutting the patron’s hair so that the shape can
clearly be seen over the shoulder around the neck and remain firmly in
position

firmly in position.

PERFORMING FINISHING TOUCHES
Learning Objectives: After reading this INFORMATION SHEET, you must

 Learn how to perform blow drying;
 Learn how to perform finishing towels; and

Equipment/tools:
 Hand held dryer is the most important piece of equipment you need
 Hand dryer attachments such as nozzles and diffusers
 Brushes are probably the most important items after blow-dryer.

DEFINITION OF TERMS:
Grip – hold firmly

Nozzle – a short tube constricted in the middle and use to speed and

Blow waving – shaping the hair into waves, using directed heated aim

 Blow styling aids protect the hair from excessive heat and give body to
the hair.
 Dressing aids give sheen, shine and gloss to the hair.
 Setting aids enhance the hair’s elasticity and help hair to keep it
manageable.
 Protectors shield the hair from the harsh effects of exposure from the
sun.
 Curl enhancers enable the hair to retain curl or wave formation longer
Tips on Hair Care for Patron
 Keep your hair clean. Use a shampoo formulated for your hair type.
 Use crème rinse if necessary.
 Give your hair a deep conditioning or hot oil treatment once a month.
 Brush your hair often. This distributes the oil evenly through the hair
and adds shine.
 Don’t over use the blow dryer.
 Have your hair trimmed one half inch every month. Regular trimming
keeps split ends to a minimum length.
Dealing with complaints
If your client does not like the style you have produced, the following may
help:
 Honestly justify what you believe is correct and suitable.
 Do not allow the client to leave with poor shape and style.
 Exercise tact, understanding and courtesy throughout.
 Take steps to rectify the complaint as soon as possible.

The unit of competency PERFORM HAIRCUT is one of the competencies of HAIRDRESSING NC II, a course which comprises the knowledge skills and attitude in cutting the hair. It involves conduction initial consultation with the client assessing their needs, actual cutting of the hair, check and apply finishing touches and perform post hair cutting activities. The module PERFORMING HAIRCUT contains training materials and activities. This unit involves the skills, knowledge and attitudes required in performing post hair activities. In this module, you are required to go through a series of learning activities in order to complete each learning outcome. In each learning outcome are lnformation Sheets, Self – Checks, Task Sheets and Job Sheets. Follow and perform the activities on your own. If you have questions, do not hesitate to ask assistance from your facilitator. Remember to: Read Information Sheets and complete the Self – checks. Suggested references are included to supplement the material provided in this module. Perform the task sheets until you are confident that your output conforms to the performance criteria checklist that follows the sheets. Submit outputs of the Task Sheets and Job Sheets to your facilitator for evaluation and recording in the Accomplishment Chart.
