Top Technology for Working Remotely | Accent by Chubb
1. Top Technology for Working Remotely
Find the newest gear to keep you productive, wherever you are.
2. It’s increasingly less important to be tied to a central
office these days. Companies that offer generous
telecommuting policies help their employees by
reducing or eliminating the environmental and time-
consuming impact of a commute.
If you’re one of the many who actually work more
efficiently from a home office, you’ll want to make
sure that you’re as well equipped at home as you are
in your company’s office. Here are some suggestions
for establishing a home space, or even going entirely
mobile.
3. Staying connected on the go. Thanks to 4G cellular
technology, mobile Internet can be just as fast as
residential connections. And in September of last
year, Verizon announced it would begin field trials
on so-called fifth-generation, or 5G, technology,
radically increasing wireless speeds and
responsiveness.
Roger Gurnani, chief information and technology
architect for Verizon, said he expects “some level of
commercial deployment” to begin by 2017. That’s
great news for road warriors.
4. “Talk” to your coworkers without in-office meetings.
After all, this is one of the greatest benefits of working
outside the traditional office environment. Consider
services like WebEx, which offers online meeting and
video conferencing for up to seven people.
GoToMeeting is a provider that works well with an iPad
for those who are truly mobile. Intercall lets callers record
and playback in addition to standard conference calling
features.
Of course, Skype, the free VOIP, also provides low-cost
unlimited calling plans to land-lines and cell phones, and
now you can add up to 10 people to a videoconference.
5. Get a good headset. With all that conferencing you’ll be
doing, you’ll need one that’s both dependable and
comfortable.
The Jabra UC Voice 550 Duo gets great reviews for
comfort: soft earcups don’t put pressure on your ears,
and a voice-canceling mic filters out background noise so
the folks in the office won’t get distracted by any of your
household noises.
Regardless of the brand you choose, look for mute
controls, noise-canceling options, comfort and great
sound quality.
6. Bring backup. Battery backup, that is. Searching for an
outlet at an inopportune moment is the last thing you
need.
The newest battery pack cases can extend the battery life
of your devices by hours. For instance, Apple has
launched an iPhone 6s/iPhone 6s Plus battery pack case.
The “Smart Battery Case” looks like a standard but hefty
standard silicone case, but has a battery pack to give you
up to 25 hours of more power.
