MYSELF AND MY FAMILY Jess Crutchley
Definition of the word FAMILY ,[object Object]
Different types of Family There are many different types of family in today's modern society although they are not the same as what they used to be. In times on by, families were large and they were always headed by the father figure who would stay with the mother until death did them part. As time went on families got smaller and they also changed the sole provider to single parent families or same sex parent families or families that aren’t headed by either parent or a biological parent.
Different types of Family It is now becoming more and more frequent to have one or two children rather than nine and it is not uncommon to have two mothers or fathers, or even just a mother or just a father. This is a reflection of how society has changed in our country and the morals have been slackened to show that now change is more socially acceptable.
The Different Types of Family Family is now more than ever a new and changing concept. As with other traditions and stereotypes they all meet the modern world and twist the rules and push the boundaries as it becomes acceptable for people to question the moulds and change what is ‘normal.’
The Different Types of Family When a family is shown on the television they are seen as happy, with a mother and a father and a boy and a girl. The perfect family, however this is not always what a family really is, there are different types of family but they aren’t always recognised as a family because of the differences they have from what is expected.
The Different Types of Family Some of the different types of family are: SOURCE [http://sixthsense.osfc.ac.uk/sociology/family/index.asp] Nuclear Family – Mother, Father and Children Extended Family – Grandparents, Parents and Children Single Parent Family – Mother or Father and Child or Children Reconstituted Family – [Step Family] where the mother and or father have divorced then remarried so they have stepchildren. Household – people who live under the same roof [unrelated]
Social Aspects of Family There are certain families that stake a claim of hierarchy based on their family name. In some countries having a certain name or being from a certain household can give you a certain reputation. ‘Family Honour’ is very big in eastern countries and in Asia, however it is thought very highly of in muslim religion. Other accounts where having a certain name means something would be in the case of the Royal family, with the name Windsor. Being part of a certain family gives you a certain superiority because you would be from a long line of ‘pure bloods' which some would feel gives you an upper hand in society.
Family Labels When you are part of a family it becomes very easy to be prejudged based on what people know or think they know about your household. It is very common for people to have an opinion formed about you based on who your mother or father or siblings are and these perceptions can be hard to shake off. For example, you meet someone called Georgina Windsor, without knowing her you automatically think she is from a posh background and is very polite, respectful and well mannered. My Own Family I live with my immediate family in my family home and I have lived like this my whole life. I live with my biological Mother and Father and my sister and we all live –mostly- in harmony. My mother and father got married when they were younger and they then had two children, me first and then my sister. My family have had a huge impact on who I am and they have shaped my views and they have helped me to see the world how I see it today.
My Family and my Values Families heavily influence our tastes, values, morals and identity. They play a huge role on who we are and what we become, because we grow up in these situations at such an impressionable age it enables them to shape our views and turn us into respectable people in the future. Nature vs. Nurture The way that we are brought up by our families gives us an identity and a they help us to incorporate ourselves into society effectively so that we are not outcasts.
Family Influence Based on the Pygmalion Effect that states that in theory people will live up to the expectations that you apply to them, this applies in no way more intimately than with in the group dynamics of a family situation. Some examples of where this is present is: The expectations of behaviour in the house. The expectations of behaviour outside the house.
Group Dynamics of the Family The days of the traditional mother, father and children family are behind us and now extended family and family from past relationships are everyday occurrences, this all adds to the group dynamics. This image shows the families in the TV Show ‘Modern Family’ Family One consists of a mother and her child and her new husband. Family Two consists of a mother, father, two daughters and a son. And Family Three consists of two fathers and their adopted baby, 1 2 3
Modern Family. Please press to view.
Group Dynamics of the Family My family I feel has a very average group dynamic structure. My father works full-time and provides mainly for my family. My mother also works but she works part-time and is the carer in my family, she looks after me and my sister and keeps the house running smoothly. I am a student, and I go to school, along with my younger sister we play the same roles within the family.
Group Dynamics of the Family In a broader picture, my immediate family is also very close with my uncles and aunties and cousins. Our relationships with these people add to the dynamics of my immediate family because they contribute greatly to our relationships and the social upbringing of myself and my sister.
Family Contribution to Values Because my family has had such a influence on me from a young age, they have contributed greatly to my tastes and values. I have been brought up with a set of values that mean that I am accepted socially.
Family Contribution to Values I was brought up around people that are at both ends of the wealth spectrum, these people are my parents friends and this has given me a great acceptance of different set ups and it has given me the point of view to not better anyone based on wealth because we are all equal. This is just one of the strong values that I have been given and will no doubt pass on to my own children and the others that I have influence.
My Identity My identity has been created for me subconsciously through my family, although I have been given the choices to chose I have always been influenced by my family to some extent. My identity in regards to a linguistic analysis my speech has been influenced greatly by my family. I speak the same as my family do, using the same tones. Although I do not notice it too much because everyone around me speaks the same I speak with a West Midlands accent. Some of the words that are say are only said in this region and some of the phrases that I use are things that I have picked up from my mother.
My Identity- Self Image Part of my self image is my social role within society. I am a daughter, a friend and a student and these roles that I play have a huge impact on who I am as a person and how I am perceived. Another part of my self image are my personality traits such as I am honest and I am hard-working have a huge impact on the person that I think I am. Based on Kuhn and McPartland’s 1954 experiment on 7-year olds and undergrads I am more in the category of the undergrads, because I would state more personality traits than my social roles. Daughter Friend Student
My Identity- Ideal Self My family has contributed to who I think my ideal self is or who my ideal self should be, although when I am around my family o do more gatekeeping than I do when I am with my friends. This is because I feel that my family get a kind of level one public self, then my friends get a level two public self verging on private self, but I could show my family my most private self but not my core self. Private Self Public Self Core Self Rogers’ concentric circle model

My mother and father got married when they were younger and they then had two children, me first and then my sister. My family have had a huge impact on who I am and they have shaped my views and they have helped me to see the world how I see it today.

  • 16. Group Dynamics of the Family In a broader picture, my immediate family is also very close with my uncles and aunties and cousins. Our relationships with these people add to the dynamics of my immediate family because they contribute greatly to our relationships and the social upbringing of myself and my sister.
  • 17. Family Contribution to Values Because my family has had such a influence on me from a young age, they have contributed greatly to my tastes and values. I have been brought up with a set of values that mean that I am accepted socially.
  • 20. • 21. 1. Hello, my name is Jessica Crutchley. I go to Heath Park Business and Enterprise College. I was asked to write about something that is very important to who I am. I chose the most important thing to me, my family.
  2. I know what family means to me, to me family is the most important group of people in my life, they have looked after me and they have raised me to become the person that I am today. They are also the people that I am blood related two through a common, important ancestor such as a mother, father, or any status of grandparent. I am sure that you know what family means to you, but what is the dictionary confirmed definition of the word family? It says that it is a – a group of people that live together, that are not necessarily related b – a primary social group that you are related such as parents and child c – a group of people who are related through gang activities such as gangsters who are a family through organized crime activities d – an organization that is closely bonded through the same beliefs or a common activities.
  3. In today’s society there are so many different types of family, that the original structure of a family isn’t the only one that is widely accepted in the community. The ‘normal’ family that once was is now uncommon or abnormal in the 50’s and 60’s it was common to have lots of children and also marriage lasted a lot longer than they do today, one in three marriages end in divorce. Because it is now very normal for the woman to go to work it is now very acceptable for the woman to be the bread-winner of the family it is also acceptable that none of the parents are stay at home and that they both work.
  4. Smaller families are now more than common; the largest family I know has seven members, a mother, father and five children. I also know lots of families that are no longer headed by a father figure, although these families are very different to my own because my family it headed by my father and I am part of a small family with only one additional sibling.
  5. The normal family is changing because the world is changing. Now it is perfectly okay in society to be gay, black or have a class difference. The boundaries and expectations have been pushed so that now nothing is surprising and is so far fetched that it is frowned upon. Stereotypes are now being tested which means that people are generally more accepting of change and different situations. Because society is less united today than in the past there is a general air of if they keep to their business then no-one really minds what that business is.
  6.   We have the Medias conception of the perfect family thrown at us from every angle, with shows like ‘my family’, ‘The Real Housewives of Orange County’ and ‘Keeping up with the Kardashians’ who show loving families that all deal with life’s little problems perfectly and as a unit. They all have two parent families and they are living the perfect family life. To watch this and see that this is the TV norm and to see that your family isn’t like this is very discouraging.
  7. There are five main types of family; the first is the normal nuclear family that consists of two different sex parents and children. The second is the extended family which means that there are grandparents, parents and children or aunties and uncles and cousins. The third is the single parent family that consists of one parent of both sex and that parent’s children whether they are biological children or not. The fourth is the reconstructed household which is made up of step-parents or step-siblings where a parent has divorced and then re-married. And the final, fifth household is one which consists of people that live under the same roof but are not necessarily blood related.
  8. Hierarchy is something that has long has ruled our country, having the right name or status can give people a leg up within society, being part of a certain family allows you at access high culture more than members of another family. Class, family and hierarchy all tie in together to determine whether a person is accepted into society and it also can affect how they are view, more so in eastern countries where family honour and disgracing a family name is looked upon in everyday life more so than in the UK. Through looking at a high status family such as the British Royal Family and the interest around Prince William not marrying another royal we can begin to see how status is so important in the upper classes.
  9. We are always linked backed to our family because a family is something that you cannot get away from or hide. Being linked to a family can be something of status symbol much like the social aspects of a family. When linked to anything, but more specifically a family it is common for others to prejudge you through what they have heard about your family or what they know about the other members of your family and this can either hinder or higher you.
  10. I belong to your average nuclear family, I live in Wolverhampton, outside of the city centre with my Mother, Father and my younger Sister and they have all made me who I am today. Although my extended family such as my aunties, uncles, cousins and grandparents has all had a hand in who I have grown up to be because we are a very close knit family.
  11. Because family are the people that we learn from they play a giant part in influencing our tastes, values and morals and they have a huge impact on our identity. We are shown what is right and wrong from a very early age by these people and they teach us how to be able to fit into society in order for us to be able to interact with others and be accepted. Our family are at the root of nature vs. nurture arguments because they not only have an effect on the nurture element but they also have an impact on the nature side of the argument because they restrict what nature we get into.
  12. Our families have expectations of us, because everyone expects something from everything and everyone. Whether or not we live up to these expectations are our choice but our families are constantly using the Pygmalion effect on us which in the long run makes us better people, if a your family expect you to do well in school it is more likely that you will do well in school because you will be the receiver of a self-fulfilling prophecy. The Pygmalion effect is not just applied to school; it can also be applied to other situations.
  13. Because what is classed as a normal family is now rapidly changing, the idea of new types of family has come into light through the media. With shows like ‘Modern Family’ highlighting what life is like in the other types of less common family structures these types of family are becoming more frequent in society and more widely accepted.
  14. Different families work in different patterns, the members of a family all play different roles within the family. My family dynamics are the same as those of the average nuclear family, my father goes to work in the morning and comes home at night therefore providing for my family. My mother works in the day-time but she is home for when we return from school, my mother takes care of our family. Me and my sister play similar roles although our individual identities mean that our roles are played slightly differently. With these group dynamics it means that we are not too different from most families, we abide by the normal formulaic family structure.
  15. Because my family are very close, it means that not only my parents have had a hand in bringing me up and helping me create my identity. My aunties, uncles, cousins and grandparents have helped me to find who I am today. They have incorporated their own morals, tastes and values into what I find normal or acceptable and this has given me a broader outlook on life rather than being raised simply to know what one set of people want me to know and what they want me to be like.
  16. My family has given me a set of values that mean that I am socially accepted, they have taught me right from wrong. They have taught me the proper way to speak to people, they have taught me how to interact with people and they have made sure that I would not be a social reject.
  17. By being the correct set of values, tastes and morals I have become an active member of society, by knowing the correct way to act in independent situations I am considered normal. I have been raised to see both ends of the spectrum so I am able to know both sides of the scale, broadening what is normal to me because of this I have a more open set of values, morals and tastes and I am a more accepting member of society.
  18. One of the ways that I have been highly influenced by my family, is the way I speak. I in no way what so ever speak the Queens English, my accent is one from where I come from, I don’t notice my accent in everyday situations because everyone around me speaks the same. My immediate family has influenced how I speak a lot because they were raised in areas where the accent is most pronounced so I have been raised speaking the same as they do.
  19. My self image is a very large part of my identity, because it is the social roles that I play within society. I play three major roles that have made me who I am and have defined my identity. Primarily I am a daughter/family member because my family is such a huge part of my social makeup. I play a big role within my family because I am one of the older members, I am the role model for the younger members. I also play the role of a friend, this means that I spend a lot of time with the people I love that are not my family. For this role I play, advisor, companion and just a general trustworthy friend. I am also a student, were I play a different set of roles.
  20. My family have played a large part in who I think my ideal self is or who my ideal self should be. When I am around my different social groups I allow different information out, I actively gatekeep more things around my parents than I do my friends. However, I think even though I do show people my public self I don’t think anyone actually sees my core self although I am very open with both friends and family.
