Conflict can be defined as a struggle between opposing forces. There are two main types of conflict: external conflict, which involves a character struggling against an outside force such as another character, nature, or society; and internal conflict, which takes place within a character's mind as they struggle between two courses of action or their conscience. External conflict includes character vs. character, character vs. nature, and character vs. society, while internal conflict solely consists of character vs. self.
