The Notch mutation is located on the X chromosome in Drosophila melanogaster. Females heterozygous for Notch have indented wing margins, while the mutation is lethal in homozygous and hemizygous conditions. The Notch deletion includes the locus for white eyes, an X-linked recessive trait. Crosses between a red-eyed Notch female and a red-eyed male, or between two red-eyed Notch females, result in offspring with a 1:1:1:1 ratio of white-eyed females, white-eyed males, red-eyed Notch females, and red-eyed males.
