Target Audience Research and Results

What i did and Why.
For my audience research I first conducted a questionnaire consisting of 8
questions referring to different horror movies, sub-genres and situations. I also
asked for the gender and age of the participants. Once at a final conclusion, the
results I gathered would be able to give me a solid idea about who I should target
my move opening at.
I decided to do my primary research in the form of a questionnaire because they
are able to generalise results and help target a specific group, with in this case
would be the age and gender of a specific group. My questionnaire will also help
me decide what type of horror would e best to appeal to a specific audience. I
also looked at Uk Tribes to help gain a clearer understanding about the groups I
wanted to appeal to. This pointed me in the direction of the ‘Alternative’ group
which is usually made up of ‘emos’, ‘scene kids’, ‘Nerds’, ‘skaters’ and ‘gamers’.
This is because they are most likely to crave he thrill and adrenaline from the
genre Horror.
Who i asked and Why.
After researching the groups that my horror movie was most likely to appeal to I
then decided to target them when conducting my questionnaire. However, I also
asked people outside of the ‘Alternative’ group, like adults or other friends, to
give me a wider overview of my audience. Also, only viewing one group would
make my results ominous as it wouldn’t show a varied audience and would only
convey a fraction of groups and ages interested in the genre. I also tried to ask a
variety of ages and took both genders into consideration. This is because the final
result would in turn be stricter and highlight a specific age range and gender.
I purposely varied the ages and genders I asked to help give me a clearer result a
I was unaware, to begin with, about who I should be targeting with my horror
movie opening. My results, however, began to clear this confusion and led me
towards my target audience. This was the gender, age and social group of those
most likely to be attracted to my opening.

Skaters are one of the few activity-based Tribes,
enjoying their new cool status as Skater trends
become embraced by the Urban, Leading Edge and
Aspirant Tribes.
Emo’s and Scene Kids are both motivated by US rock
scene and Americana icons, yet differ in terms of their
outlook. For Emo’s, it’s about expressing yourself
through music, while Scene Kids are more
preoccupied with having fun and boozing with mates.
Hardcore's have a serious affinity with a screaming
genre of punk and the straight edge scene – wearing
their distinctive tribal tats and turn-up look with pride.
These groups are most likely to watch Horror movies
as they would seek the thrill and adrenaline often seen
in this genre.
Questions i asked.
What I Found.
After conducting my research I carefully looked over my results. These gave some
clear indications towards my target audience and helped me decided who to target
my production at. To begin with, the questionnaire enabled us to use a varied
audience giving a more precise reading at the end. This allowed us to target a
specific age group as we could gather an average. This also allowed us to highlight a
gender that would be more interested in the group as we could again find an average
result. This told us that the mot common people to watch Horror Movies are Males
aged 18-25. 18 is the most successful classification because it allows the use of
gore, sexual and graphic nature which would be above a younger audience. This
means a younger audience wouldn’t experience the horror genre fully, potentially
leading to a dislike or lack of interest in the genre. My questionnaire shows that
older teens and young adults are most likely to view Horror films. This will be who
e target our production at.
To Conclude,
To conclude, we have decided to target our production at males over the age of 18.
This is because this will allow us to add the paranormal twist we wished whilst not
having to be cautious of a young age. We also chose to target a male audience
because our questionnaire and other research suggested they were most likely to
view the Horror Genre. By targeting this group and making the production fit their
expectations, we are in turn widening our audience size. However, we will also try
and attract a female audience and take into consideration their views and
preferences.
We have also decided on a paranormal sub-genre as this was popular in our
other research and want to use suspense and mystery to gain a better reaction from
our audience. Most people who partook in the questionnaire said they liked to see
suspense within a Horror which is one of the main things we rely on for our
production.
