Diaspora and Economy: Effects of the Global Economic Slowdown on Remittances

The study is on the effect of Net capital inflow on inclusive growth in Nigeria. This study seeks to deepen the understanding on how capital inflow creates opportunity for inclusive growth in Nigeria through increase in GDP per capita. The objective of the study were to : determine the effect of Net capital inflow , Net foreign direct investment and trade openness on inclusive growth in Nigeria. The study employed the time series data in its analysis. The period of analysis spanned through 1980-2015 and the dataset required for the analysis were sourced from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Statistical Bulletin and National bureau of statistics publications. The study conducted trend analysis, descriptive analysis. The data were also tested for stationarity using the Augmented Dickey Fuller (ADF) unit root test and Ordinary Least Square (OLS) analytical techniques, cointegration test and error correction mechanism. It was evident from the unit root test that the variables were fractionally integrated while the cointegration test reveals that long run relationship exists among the variables. The findings equally reveal that capital inflow exerts significant negative influence on GDP per capita. This could be attributed to the problem of managing external capital flows which has been sub-optimal in most developing economies including Nigeria. The implication of this finding is that the perceived benefits that are associated with capital inflows tend not to hold sway in Nigeria over the sampled period which may be attributed to institutional and governance failure. Owing to the findings, this study recommends for the adoption of investment friendly policies and ensure transparency and good governance, appropriate economic management practices capable of supporting reforms in the Nigerian financial system and guide international capital inflows to ensure that the associated economic turnarounds are people-centered.

In their search for sustainable development and endurable development strategies, neo-colonial economies of the Third World and Africa in particular gloss over massive corruption in public office and sit-tight syndrome of leaders. Rather, since attaining independence in the 1950s and 60s, their leaders have tinkered with several development strategies drawn from both the capitalists and socialist models. In all of these, development has remained a far cry as a result of many challenges faced by these economies. Strategies ranging from indigenization to export promotion and import substitution of the 1960s, to privatization and structural adjustment of the 1980s and Foreign Direct Investment of the 1990s have been experimented with varying degrees of success. Little has been done in the area of checking financial corruption and abuse of office by public office holders, building of strong institutions from which economic oriented strategies can be rooted and checking tenure elongation by leaders of states. The results have been huge failures and frustration on the part of development partners. This paper has attempted a survey approach to Foreign Direct Investment as a way out of structural imbalances of neo-colonial economies. Basing this examination on Nigeria, findings have shown that Foreign Direct Investment can work for development only if host government regulate the activities of foreign investors and also create enabling environment for investment to yield expected results.

Abstract: The paper examines the role played by banks in the propagation of external shocks to African economies. We employ a general equilibrium model of a small open economy to analyse how the banking sector propagates external shocks. The study uses a vector autoregression (VAR) analysis to assess the impact of exchange rate and foreign interest rate shocks on bank lending spreads and output fluctuations in African economies. We use quarterly time-series data for 5 selected African countries for the period 1990-2011. The findings show that foreign interest rate and exchange rate shocks significantly affect output fluctuations in Africa. The results, however, indicate that banks play limited role in the propagation of shocks to African economies.

This paper takes a systematic look at the economic impact of the crisis that started in earnest in the fall of 2008 across countries and regions. Despite warnings of growing domestic and external imbalances in many countries years ahead of the crisis, the massive impact of the crisis came as a surprise to most. By correlating economic performance in the crisis with an extensive set of early warning, country insurance, and policy indicators, this paper provides some lessons on crisis prevention and management for the future. Although significant efforts have been made to develop robust early warnings systems, the paper shows the mixed success of some commonly analyzed indicators in predicting economic outcomes in this crisis. The only robust early warning indicator was increases in real estate prices while international reserves seem to have insured against the worst crisis outcomes on average. However, much work on building a robust early warning system remains and the analytical and empirical challenges in this area are substantial. The issues confronting early warning systems are also relevant to the more recent field of macro prudential supervision and regulation. Nevertheless, the cost of crises is massive and preventing future ones with better regulation, policies and supervision based on solid research must be a top priority among policy makers and academics alike.

International trade builds up through international factor movement (IFM). IFM means movement of labour, capital and other elements of production among different country. It occurs by three ways: first one is immigration or emigration, international borrowing or lending is second way and last one is foreign direct investment (FDI). FDI means controlling ownership of a business enterprise of one country is based on entity of another country. Investment through FDI depends on various factors namely Inflation Rate, Human Development Index (HDI), Global Terrorism Index (GTI), Global Peace Index (GPI), Unemployment, Population; Corruption Perception Index (CPI), Industrial disputes etc. Object of this present study is to identify the effect of these factors on FDI inflow for India and Brazil. Also identify the more important determinants for FDI of these two countries. Ten years data (2005 to 2014) have been used for determining the result of this study. The present study begins by surveying broadly supports the assertion that regional integration in the case of the BRICS is not adequately paid attention except with very few original or significant contributions. This research examines the existing pattern in the areas of trade and investment with a view to locate in the development context. It was also essential to make a theoretical investigation on literature of trade along with the empirical one. The survey broadly supports the frequent, through usually undocumented, assertion that BRICS was an area had tended to neglect and to which they had made few if any original or significant contributions. Alongside, this study panel data on BRICSs, where the results confirm that foreign direct investment (FDI), trade and economic growth indicate the presence of long-run sustainable equilibrium relationship between them. It is thus important that policymakers to remove obstacles to FDI inflows and improve the respective absorptive capacity in order to reap maximize positive growth effects. This study also discussed that how China performed well through attracting FDI inflows and maintained trade balance.

The main goal of the current study is to investigate how conventional and institutional factors affect foreign direct investment in particular global emerging markets. The study specifically seeks to determine the impact of GDP Growth, Population Growth, Level of Inflation, Trade Openness, Voice and Accountability, Rule of Law, Control of Corruption, Political Stability, and Government Effectiveness which are institutional determinants on FDI Inflows towards the Global Emerging Markets. To approach the research question a panel regression analysis has been applied by leveraging annual data from 18 countries, namely Angola, Brazil, Chile, China, Colombia, Egypt, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Philippines, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea and Vietnam. THE IMPACT OF FOREIGN DIRECT INVESTMENT ON ECONOMIC GROWTH IN CANADA ABSTRACT The study examines the determinants of economic growth in Canada over time, and finds out if there is any support for FDI-led growth hypothesis in Canada using simple regression analysis. To achieve this goal the study uses a model that is based on the Mankiw et al 1992 as theoretical foundation for the analysis in which they emphasized on human capital as an important variable for economic growth in addition FDI will be incorporated into their model as a variable capable of increasing physical capital as well as developing human capital and enhancing technological progress capable of stimulating economic growth. Using 11-year period of quarterly data. INTRODUCTION The rapid expansion of globalization marked by enhanced economic integration and trade liberalization has given rise to ever expanding investment around the world. The immense growth in the computer and telecommunications industries, and lowering of transportation costs has made it possible for each state of production to be located in any place that proves to be more conducive to efficiency. This situation has significantly increased the inflow of foreign direct investment (FDI) in the world which has risen to the second highest level ever recorded in 2006. As a result, developed countries, developing countries, and transition economies all experienced growth in FDI inflows. However, among developed nations. FDI in Canada plunged during the period of 2002 – 2004(which is not covered by our data set) in manufacturing sector due to attrition and maintained a stunted latency in terms of global share of FDI (huffingtonpost 2013;the globe and mail 2010). Although major concentration of these investment was on manufacturing its deterioration by 13 percent from 2009 to 2009 drove investors to mining and oil and gas which increased by 10 percent by 2000 to 2009. Also the finance and insurance industries was not left out by investors which witnessed an increase of 1.4 percent by 2009 to 2009. FDI shares in other Canadian sector either witnessed an increase of 1.9 percent or more to date. Proponent of FDI emphasized that host country benefit from capital spillovers (Morris, 2008, p. 4.). Abstract: This paper examines the models of economic growth and the dynamic interaction between models from the Solow Model to New Endogenous Models. Long-term relationship of these models is noticed to have been related in terms of causality. Model comparisons were made to examine their dynamics which is not as complex as reflected. Results that growth is led by endogenous or exogenous factors are not verified to be absolute but relative. Results indicate that FDI affect the economic growth in many developing countries, but there are also many cases (developed countries) that show that economic growth has led to a long term increase of FDI flow. It is also verified that the impact of FDI on the environment is relative, based on the fact that there are exogenous factors that may affect the reduction of externalities. Causal link among FDI, economic growth and their impact on the environment makes the endogenous models be analysed with the dynamics, through which is shown best which is the “cause-consequence” factor, that causes gaps of concepts and practices in economic growth and environmental concerns.

Special attention is given to the importance of these outcomes for people of developing nations. Findings in the literature show a correlation between economic globalization and economic growth, but the relationship is much stronger for some nations than for oth- ers. Evidence on wages also shows uneven benefĳits from economic globalization. The evidence on poverty is inconclusive, while several authors note growing inequality within nations. These studies highlight the need for more research that includes extraneous factors, such as foreign aid and remittances. Further research also should refĳine the unit of analysis and gather extensive data from the informal sector. Keywords Globalization, free trade, liberalization, poverty, inequality Introduction There has been much debate about whether economic globalization is good or bad for people in their daily lives. Of course, disagreement among academics is by no means nothing new, but rarely do we see such polemic views on what appears to be a fairly simple question. Marber (1998) claims, “Multi- nationals are helping the poor get richer and the rich stay rich,” (p. 87) while Isaak (2007) in his title asserts, “the rich get richer and the poor get left further behind.” At least they agree about the rich. So the real debate seems to be about the poor, and that will be the focus of this article. More precisely, I will look at four outcomes of economic globalization for people in developing nations: growth, wages, poverty, and inequality. I will not offfer a defĳinitive assessment of those four outcomes; but with a fresh look at the data available, D. Haase / PGDT 11 (2012) 38-49 39 I hope to contribute to a broader and deeper understanding of the social impact of economic globalization. Part of the problem with the debate on economic globalization is that people agree on what exactly it is, but much less on what efffect it has. But at least there is a common understanding that economic globalization involves freer trade and investment between nations, as well as a certain set of policies sup- posedly designed to make each nation more adept at trading and more attrac- tive to investors. In this article I will begin with that simple defĳinition and look at how it has been operationalized and correlated with the aforementioned four outcomes in a variety of studies. In recent years, economic globalization and technological development have contributed to a substantial rise in the integration of financial markets. Research findings in this area have indicated that a financial shock in one market can easily be transmitted to other markets globally. Especially, recent experiences showed that financial markets of some developing economies may even be more vulnerable to financial shocks than the emerging markets. There are several reasons, such as current account deficits, instability of local currencies, weaker financial institutions, for this situation. Contrary to the popular perception, this may be due to the lack of knowledge and prejudices of international investors about some emerging markets. This study evaluates and compares the financial soundness of 18 countries selected on the basis of the “Fragile Five” countries. The soundness of the financial structures of these countries has been evaluated based on the soundness of their financial institutions. The findings indicate that the countries with the weakest performance in the selected period are not the “Fragile Five” countries when compared with the countries in the whole sample.

The objective of the conference is to bring together academic researchers and experts studying issues related to international trade, industrial organization, economics and operation of multinational companies in border economies. This is part of the recent process of regional economic integration and economic globalization in the XXI century. These areas of study are of crucial importance to the border state economies of Mexico and the United States, and also to other regions that are more exposed to the international economy.
