There are seven forms of waste that can be found in production systems. Each form of waste is an opportunity for Bosch to improve. Waste elimination is not a Japanese idea. Henry Ford in his book “Today and Tomorrow” wrote about the importance of waste elimination in the 1920’s. Overproduction is making of a product than what the customer wants. It is considered the worst form a waste because it ties up inventory, space, labor, and overhead.

Waiting Time is the time parts sit waiting for the next operation
Transportation is required to move parts through the factory. No value is being added to the product when parts are being moved.
Excess Processing is the extra operations that add no value to the product. Visual Inspection Washing Deburring
Inventory Waste is the cost for Bosch to hold large amounts of inventory. Inventory should be minimized. Finished Goods Work in Process Spare Parts
Excess Motions are the internal motions (wasteful) that add no value to the product. Most of these are due to poor layout/material flow and workstation design.
Correction is the cost of reworking parts to make them sellable.
