    READING (10 marks).
Read the following text about keeping fit, and choose the best option.

1. People spend enough time thinking about the reasons (or excuses) for not exercising: they don’t have
enough time, they’re too old, it’s too expensive, etc. Perhaps if they took time out to list the reasons why
they should exercise, they might be more convinced.
2. For many people, the most powerful argument for exercise is that it helps with weight control. Many
people simply go on a diet to lose weight. But dieting without exercise can cause a loss of muscle as well
as fat. And you’re much more likely to put the weight back on if you stop. A diet combined with aerobic
exercise actually builds muscle while burning off fat. Weight loss may be less dramatic, but because
muscle burns off more calories the results are longer lasting.
3. The most direct health benefit is on the heart. Exercising for 20 to 30 minutes three times a week can
improve the health of the heart even after years of sitting behind a desk. It strengthens it, resulting in
more blood and oxygen flowing through the body. At the same time, it lowers blood pressure and
cholesterol levels, both major health risks. There are other physical benefits. Fitness increases strength,
flexibility and stamina. This helps reduce
the risk of injury, since stronger, more flexible muscles are less susceptible to strain and sprain. It also
improves your posture. Poor posture is a major cause of injury, and can lead to problems later in life.
4. As well as physical benefits, there are clear psychological benefits. Achieving fitness goals leads to self-
confidence and improved body image, self-awareness and self-esteem. There is also the discipline that
comes with regular exercise, which seems to have a positive effect on your professional career. It also
seems to have an impact socially. People involved in activities they enjoy and who have a positive self-
image often show an ease in social situations. Ultimately, it’s the growth in confidence, rather than a
slimmer waistline that leads to an improved social life. But remember the most important factor in
keeping fit is enjoyment. People often mention weight control, feeling “better” and gaining strength as
priorities for working out. But you won’t lose weight, get strong or feel “better” if you can't find the
motivation to exercise. So get out there and try different things, new locations.

People spend enough time thinking about the reasons (or excuses) for not exercising: they don’t have enough time, they’re too old, it’s too expensive, etc. Perhaps if they took time out to list the reasons why they should exercise, they might be more convinced. 2. For many people, the most powerful argument for exercise is that it helps with weight control. Many people simply go on a diet to lose weight. But dieting without exercise can cause a loss of muscle as well as fat. And you’re much more likely to put the weight back on if you stop. A diet combined with aerobic exercise actually builds muscle while burning off fat. Weight loss may be less dramatic, but because muscle burns off more calories the results are longer lasting. 3. The most direct health benefit is on the heart. Exercising for 20 to 30 minutes three times a week can improve the health of the heart even after years of sitting behind a desk. It strengthens it, resulting in more blood and oxygen flowing through the body. At the same time, it lowers blood pressure and cholesterol levels, both major health risks. There are other physical benefits. Fitness increases strength, flexibility and stamina. This helps reduce the risk of injury, since stronger, more flexible muscles are less susceptible to strain and sprain. It also improves your posture. Poor posture is a major cause of injury, and can lead to problems later in life. 4. As well as physical benefits, there are clear psychological benefits. Achieving fitness goals leads to self- confidence and improved body image, self-awareness and self-esteem. There is also the discipline that comes with regular exercise, which seems to have a positive effect on your professional career. It also seems to have an impact socially. People involved in activities they enjoy and who have a positive self- image often show an ease in social situations. Ultimately, it’s the growth in confidence, rather than a slimmer waistline that leads to an improved social life. But remember the most important factor in keeping fit is enjoyment. People often mention weight control, feeling “better” and gaining strength as priorities for working out. But you won’t lose weight, get strong or feel “better” if you can't find the motivation to exercise. So get out there and try different things, new locations. c. puts a strain on your a. enjoyment 1.
