25. PARTICIPANTS CHARACTERISTICS
• 20 participants: 8 women, 12 men.
• Age Range: 22 ~ 39 • Age Mean: 26
• 19 of 20 participants have experience using multi-touch gesture
• 18 of 20 participants have experience using motion gesture
• ALL participants have tried Google Maps on PC
• ALL participants have tried Google StreetView on PC
• We give participants 10 minutes to get familiar with MapXplorer Handy

You have just arrived at SendaiTrain Station. Currently, you are planning to
meet your friend at some place nearby called Entatsu Parking. Here are the
steps you need to take:

1. Go to the South West until you find an intersection.
2. Take a look at the top view of the street and try to find Coca-Cola
banner above a green building.
3. After seeing it, keep moving to the South along the street called
Ekimae Dori until the next intersection.Along the move, you will be
led to the West.
4. As you continuously move to the West, you will seeTsutaya and
Family Mart store.They are in the same building.
5. Just go straight for a bit, Entatsu Parking is in the left side, beside
those stores.

DISCUSSION
• Actually some users performed slightly better when using the
legacy system. It is likely because they have already had much
longer experiences in in using Google Maps and StreetView on
the computer. It may also indicate that 10 minutes trial in the
beginning is insufficient.
• The study figured out that participants spent more times in
enjoying the StreetView.They likely used to treat the handheld
devices as a control rather than map display instrument.Therefore
handheld display resolution may not be an important factor in
affecting user performance, especially in navigation task.

35. CONCLUSIONS

•An immersive map exploration system using
handheld device called MapXplorer Handy is
presented based on the metaphor of a traveler
reading map on the real street.
•The experiment results shows that: while using
MapXplorer Handy, the users performs 1.5 faster
in average on exploration and navigation tasks.

•Involving more precise cognition measurements
in user study by investigating user attention and
stress level (Crowley, 2010)
•Conducting further study verifying which factor
of metaphor aspect (e.g., dual-display, curved
display, wider display, or handheld control) takes
dominant role in improving user performance
