Scenario Representation GAME Each of the 8 tables has a set of cards in envelope 1 on their table. Each table has a different scenario. Each set has 6 cards in it ,[object Object]
 3 Gen Y cards
2 Boomer cardsINSTRUCTIONS   IN GROUPS OF FIVE, DEAL OUT THE BOOMER AND GEN Y CARDS SO EACH MEMBER HAS ONE ONE PERSON FROM THE GROUP READS THE SENARIO CARD (IF NO BODY WANTS TO READ THE SENARIO CARD THEN THE PERSON WITH GEN Y CARD C WILL READ THE SENARIO CARD)   EACH PERSON FROM THE GROUP ANSWERS THE QUESTION ON THEIR CARD, (ACCORDING TO THE SENARIO,) IN CHRONILOGICAL ORDER STARTING WITH GEN Y CARD #_ A, BOOMER CARD #_A ...THROUGH TO GEN Y CARD #_ C   WHEN EVERYONE HAS ANSWERED THEIR QUESTION THE GROUP HAS A SHORT DISCUSION ABOUT IT   THEN WE WILL DISCUSS THE OUTCOME AS A CONFRENCE GROUP
Scenario 1 (Hand out on each table in envelope 2) Josh Lewis was bored. For three days the recent Algonquin grad had been crunching car sales, advertising on the internet, and filing documents for his boss, Sarah Bennett, the finance manager of the car dealership. Sarah and her team were prepping the promotional plan for the next years cars coming in; her presentation to the company’s CEO and other unit leaders was on Friday. In the commissary, he vented to his friends. “I’m buried in ridiculous busywork. Sarah’s all amped about the new marketing plan for the 2012 vehicles. But I’m just not feeling it.” “Have you tried explaining that to Sarah?” his friend Jessica asked. Josh had—during a team meeting in which Sarah outlined her marketing ideas. It centered on TV ads and print, and Josh had joked about how 1990s it was. No one watches network TV anymore, he pointed out. Why not try new media? Offer an iPod that can connect to the new vehicles radio system with every purchase . Or put the 2012 line of cars online with prize draw options.
Sarah had immediately balked, an upcoming advertisement being launched in a new magazine, which has very little traffic and even less functionality. “So how about striking deals with local entertainment?” Josh replied. “We’d be leveraging our library in a way that gets out in front of the movement to free content.” “Our budget is soft right now,” Sarah said, cutting off the discussion. “We don’t have the resources to throw at these channels.” That ended that, Josh explained to his friends, complaining, “I just expected that I’d get to act on more of my ideas.” Sarah stared anxiously at her computer screen. Where were the numbers from Josh? She couldn’t stay late tonight; every minute she was late to pick up Rosie from day care was costing her. At close to 5:30, Josh’s report arrived, but the last couple of case studies looked sketchy and thrown together quickly. She’d have to work on them in the morning.
Josh had completed his work poorly and he knew it, Sarah thought. Like so many young people, he was more concerned with getting praise than with earning praise. How else to explain that “look at me” move in the team meeting? Not that Josh’s ideas were bad. He just hadn’t bothered to think about things like money and infrastructure. If I had tried something like that as an associate, she thought, I would have been back at square one in a heartbeat. “Oops!” Sarah literally bumped into the CEO, John Doe, in the hallway early on Friday. “Great work cultivating the new guys, Sarah. I’m looking forward to hearing more from Josh today,” Sam said in passing. “I love the approach he pitched me, and I love the wiki he sent around last night explaining his idea. See you in a bit.” Sarah stared after him. What? Wikis? She was amazed on every level. She pulled out her BlackBerry and punched out a message: “Josh, come to my office in 10, please.” How can these members of two different generations work together more effectively?
Putting yourself in their shoes What do you see? Where are your priorities?
Stop walking on the type rope Understanding Realization Team work There is more than one direction to travel in to accomplish your goals. Be open to trying a new line.

Notes de l'éditeur

  1. (3mins)Today we are going to be discussing the differences in how the boomers and the gen y’s think. How they feel the other generation thinks about them and how we can get on the same page so we can begin to understand each other. But first:Hi My name is Carol-Anne Brenner Blurb about me
  2. (3mins)The gen Y’s have gotten a bad wrap. Very different work set then their predecessors the baby boomer. Is it only the work habits that are different though?Wouldn’t it be nice if we could put strings on our new employees from the gen y era? Make them work harder. Make them do the work the way that had work for years. Make them earn their pay check like the boomers had too.Or Should we allow ourselves to learn from the gen y’s? Why do they do things the way that they do? What are they thinking about when the boomers are struggling to understand? AND What do they have to offer?
  3. (3mins) Often the baby boomers see Gen Y as children. After all they don’t want to work long hours. Why are they unwilling to work the long hours at work that the baby boomers did when they got a job? It’s because they have seen their parents work, and work until they came home too tired to have a life of any kind. Their parents did not give much attention to their families and then after all they did for the company many lost jobs after dedicating their whole lives to it. Gen Y does not want to let this happen to them or their families. They don’t live to work. They would rather work to live.Another reason baby boomers see their relationship with gen Y in the workplace is like a parent child one is because Gen Y works fast and then looks lazy to the hard working baby boomers. Gen Y may have done just as much work as the baby boomer but because they have time to spare the boomer thinks they should stay to do more. Even though they seem lazy does it mean that they are lazy? No. They just have different priorities. Boomers were raised to do the math in their heads. They did not use calculators. Boomers often wonder what the young workers are even learning at school, and why they are not given the skills they need. The traditional way at work would have accommodated the way boomers were raised to be the most successful, but now you have these young people entering the workforce and many of them can not even multiply in their heads. Gen Y’s have learned how to use technology to their benefit saving time, preventing error, and building skills that boomers did not have neither the time or the technology to learn in school.
  4. (3 mins)The baby boomers were raised very different then the Gen Y generation. Their goals are not so different though. The boomer began the era of protesting for rights and trying to make a difference. Now the Gen y’s want to make the work more efficient. The boomers worked hard so that they could provide for their families. Gen Y-ers want to provide a balanced life for their families so that their families can count on them both financially and emotionally.
  5. (3 mins) Gen Y - Wants to make their work more efficient so that they can enjoy their lives away from work Want their ideas heard Want to be valued on their performance not their seniorityBaby Boomers - Work hard and when you finish your task find more to do to fill your day Think you should wait your turn for promotion based on dedication and seniority. If the way the company is doing things has worked for the past 25 years then they do not have to be changed.
  6. (20 mins)Pause slide show for activity. This activity should take 20 mins.
  7. Slides 7-9 (15 mins with short discussion)
  8. Descusion about scenario—when we did the scenario game we didn’t see how each memeber really felt and how they viewed each other. We now have a fuller story and we can understand to some degree how each member felt. Both parties made mistakes but if they can understand each other and communicate their differences they can work together efficiantly.
  9. (5mins)If you want to understand you employees and co-workers, try to see what their priorities are and match or make a compromise to help both parties feel fulfilled at the end of the day. Employees who do not accomplish satisfaction work will move on and the position will need to be refilled. In some cases this is necessary, but overall, you do not want to have to rehire staff repeatedly if you can avoid it because this can cause others at work to become overwhelmed and unsatisfied.
  10. (3 mins) Understand how your co-workers think and work.Join forces, balance your priorities, and learn from each other.Come to the realization that you can work together compatibly. These two generations can accomplish more than anyone could have ever imagined, if you can see that there is more than just one direction to go in.
  11. (2 mins) Lets loosen our ties and begin to understand each other.Thank you for coming. Are there any questions?
