The ability of the present-day human to be fully aware of what’s happening in every corner of the globe owes its possibility to the efficient mechanisms operated by the transnational media corporations. For more than a century, these entities have progressively expanded worldwide thus impacting every human life with the aid of the advanced communication systems technologies such as cable, digital, satellite, and the internet that were developed in the twentieth century. It can be well said that these technologies powered up the rise, growth, and extension of transnational media corporations because they enabled them to seamlessly develop high-quality content and distribute it worldwide in real-time. This presentation is aimed at explaining the scope of this phenomenon, the entities behind it, and how such transformations have promoted global communication and at the same time it explores the criticism they face regarding their ownership, content generation and coverage. In this presentation, we also observe that the success of TMC’s lie in the billion-dollar investments, mergers, and acquisitions which have seen them combine resources with their rivals to dominate and influence the global media market – a result which has not been without disapproval from the media critics and scholars. The review questions at the end of the presentation let us ponder over the inquisitive concerns related to what is covered herein.

Dr. James Kinyangi, the Regional Program Leader for CCAFS, presented the findings of the loss and damage study. In his preamble, James pointed out that Mozambique is unique in Eastern and Southern Africa especially when it comes to understanding climate change and climate variability. Preliminary results focus on impacts on crop production but livestock and fisheries are also recognized as key production activities. Major findings from the study reveal that flood and drought severely affected the households surveyed, with 86% of the households severely affected by flood while 84% of the households were severely affected by drought. Furthermore, despite adopting coping strategies, 48% of households reported that they still suffered the negative effects of flood, while 77% indicated that their coping strategies did not prevent adverse effects of drought.

The Southern African farmers’ challenge: climate finance for agriculture
The Southern African farmers’ challenge: climate finance for agriculture
Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation ACP-EU (CTA)
Introduction South Africa has not one but three capital cities. More precisely, the government branches are divided among three major South African cities: Pretoria, Cape Town, and Bloemfontein. South Africa is the second largest economy in Africa. BUSINESS SECTORS Agriculture South Africa has a dual agricultural economy, with both well-developed commercial farming and more subsistence-based production in the deep rural areas. Agricultural activities range from intensive crop production and mixed farming in winter rainfall and high summer rainfall areas to cattle ranching in the bushveld and sheep farming in the arid regions. Forestry and Fisheries The main challenge in fisheries is to create a balance between maximizing the social and economic potential of the fisheries industry; protecting the integrity and quality of the country's marine and coastal ecosystems and addressing transformation in the sector. Tourism South Africa's scenic beauty, magnificent outdoors, sunny climate, cultural diversity and reputation for delivering value for money have made it one of the world's fastest growing leisure – and business – travel destinations. The tourism industry continues to play an important role in the South African economy. Mining and Mineral Mining in South Africa has been the main driving force behind the history and development of Africa's most advanced and richest economy, after Nigeria. The industry remains the biggest contributor to the country's gross domestic product. The mining industry has embraced a new way of doing business. Energy Sector Energy development is a field of endeavor focused on making available sufficient primary energy sources and secondary energy forms to meet the needs of society. The South African energy sector has been, and continues to be, at the centre of the country’s development.

This third webinar in the series 'CCS in Developing Countries' was presented by the World Bank. Deploying CCS in developing countries is critically important. The International Energy Agency estimates that to achieve global emissions reduction targets 70% of CCS projects will be in non-OECD countries by 2050. CCS faces a number of challenges, in all countries, but particularly in developing countries. This webinar discussed some of these challenges and barriers using South Africa as a case study. South Africa is working towards a Test Injection Project and subsequently a Carbon Capture and Sequestration Project. The World Bank considered it important to understand a set of constraints, including regulatory, technical, economic, human capacity, etc. to realization of CCS demonstration and commercialization, and how the CCS development will look like in the South African context, out to 2050. A techno-economic assessment has been undertaken to gain this understanding. The techno-economic assessment explored CCS deployment in six relevant industries in South Africa, and assessed projected scenarios associated with key issues of interest (such as cost, impact on electricity prices, timeframes etc). The key output from the techno-economic study was a techno-economic model, supported by the data sets, specifically for South Africa. The potential storage site capacity has been analysed to provide a strong indication of the likely storage capacity available within physical and economic constraints.

The second webinar in the public engagement, education and outreach for CCS Series took a more in-depth look at CCS education, specifically the creation and delivery of CCS education programs within developing countries. Education has long been recognised as a critical component in understanding how science, society, and adaptation influence thinking about issues impacting our climate. As an emerging technology with an important role to play in shaping our low carbon energy future, CCS plays a role in our teaching around these topics in both developed and developing countries. In this webinar, geochemist and renowned CCS education professional Sallie Greenberg, PhD, was joined by the Stakeholder Engagement Team from the South African Centre for Carbon Capture & Storage (SACCCS) to discuss the key learnings and experiences highlighted in, CCS education in developing countries a recent guidance paper for the Global CCS Institute. Drawing on learning from existing CCS education initiatives and good practice from the wider education literature, Dr Greenberg highlighted areas of universal approach while facing particular challenges when working in the context of a developing country. Ms Polly Modiko, the Head of Stakeholder Engagement at SACCCS, then introduced the comprehensive program of education and outreach activities that the SACCCS team have been developing to support exploration of opportunities for an onshore Pilot CO2 Storage Project (PCSP) in South Africa. This entire Webinar Series has been designed to hear directly from the experts and project practitioners researching and delivering public engagement, education and outreach best practice for CCS. This second Webinar combined elements of education research with real world application and discussion, showcasing important learnings, and concluding with links to further education resources for those wishing to learn more.

The role of media in contemporary international relations: culture and politics at the crossroads Hamid Mowlana International Communication Program, School of International Service, American University The purpose of this article is to reflect on the role of media in contemporary international relations and the ecological aspects of international communication in the technological age through the life and work of Edgar Snow, an American pioneering writer on China–US relations and an exemplary internationalist. The article postulates that the battlefield of international politics has shifted from geographical and physical levels to cultural and communication levels with modern media playing a crucial role in perceptions and image-making. Consequently, we are increasingly removed from experience and becoming overly dependent on the representations of reality that come to us through media. We have often lost our place within an actual community and our touch with a particular natural landscape that had always grounded us. The article therefore posits that a new paradigm and an ethical way of communicating across cultures for mutual dialogue, respect, and dignity are required if we desire to move toward a more equitable and just global community. We must learn to seek out and intentionally create expectations of morality and conduct especially at the international level. As Snow understood long before it became clear to most anyone else, the Western concept of reductionist science and its linear and short- term communication approach to our environment also need to be augmented by the holistic and organic notion of communication and science emanating from the East. ARTICLE HISTORY Received 5 March 2015 Accepted 17 March 2015 KEYWORDS China–US relations; communication technology; culture; Edgar Snow; global communication; international relations Edgar Snow (1905–1972) lived in a vastly different world than what we find ourselves in today. Yet issues in international relations are set in a strikingly similar framework of inter- action between the political realm and developments in international communication. Gratefully, we have heroes of the past who, by their example, can help guide the course of the future and what we contribute to it. We can not only commemorate the life and work of one pioneering writer and internationalist but also think together about what shape our world is taking. We can look at how international communication and international relations interact to inform us of how we can better reflect the principles and priorities that Edgar Snow worked so hard to promote. An examination of the current international setting, and the communication realities that emanate from and shape this setting, will show the importance of understanding the role of international communication. © 2015 Taylor & Francis CONTACT Hamid Mowlana [email protected] JOURNAL OF MULTICULTURAL DISCOURSES, 2016 VOL. 11, NO. 1, 84–96 http://dx.doi.org/10.108.

This report explores the untold story of how the COVID crisis has impacted on journalists – and journalism - in Emerging Economies and the Global South. It’s a story told not only through the insights of industry leaders, advocates and media experts – but critically, through the voices of the journalists themselves, too often unheard or silenced. It is the first report of its kind to bring together both fact-based data and first-hand experience with this regional focus. Taking a deep dive into the critical challenges faced by the profession, the report examines issues including the pandemic’s impact on the personal safety and welfare of journalists, the structure of newsrooms and disruption to business models, the proliferation of fake news, and surging threats to media freedom. The study also identifies best practice and innovative approaches that have been developed as a response to the challenges of COVID-19. Contributing alumni from TRF’s journalism training programmes span 26 countries, sharing their own experiences to illustrate the reality of journalism outside of North America and Western Europe.
